As I type this on my company issued 2017 MBP 15... I backspace to fix the double strikes. I bang harder on the keyboard to get some to type. I constantly have to deal with dongle hell just to do my daily job functions. I don't have the physical keys I need to touch type my way through my job.

I am a HUGE Apple fan. I have been an all in guy for a decade plus. But this is just getting ridiculous. I'm serious considering bouncing off to Linux because M$ is just not an option in my mind. I'm not going back to virus hell. I'm just wondering if I'm alone? Is this part of the plan? Is Apple pushing us to iPad Pros? It just feels like I got a "MacBook Plus" not a "Pro" machine. By that I mean it seems like somebody let a marketing person convince them that they could up sell people out of MacBook with bells and whistles and didn't bother giving a Pro line machine features and function I needed.

Again, I'm not some Windows or Android zealot here to start a flame war. Just a hardcore Apple guy wondering what Apple is thinking these days and if they just aren't that "into" the laptop market anymore?

Been on Windows 10 for years and not had any virus issues. I'm also a Linux admin and advocate for it, but I wouldn't dismiss Windows at this point. I even use the built in stuff and not had a problem.

Great that the 2019 version has finally added secondary function key
Its funny how a small change, can be a major issue. While for me, there were other factors, the lack of backlighting those secondary values were a major issue as I used the laptop. I'm also liking the idea of getting an RTX 2060, and playing more games on the computer.

I've not fully decided, but I do have my MBP in the marketplace as a feeler, If I got a decent offer, I'd probably take it, at this point. While the keyboard has not caused any problems, and I do tend to use an external keyboard (just in case), I think perhaps a Lenovo, Razer or [insert another maker here] may be a better fit for my needs and wants for 2019

Viruses no, but there's other types of malware that seem more prevalent in windows vs. macOS. I manage servers and help support workstations and both have been problem free. Most of the malware infections on the workstations is due to user ignorance, i.e., falling for a phishing email that installs something bad

If it works for you, sure. Unfortunately, Lenovo doesn’t make a computer that can match the 15” MBP combination of performance, portability and ergonomy, so I’d rather carry a 80g dongle with me rather than switch to a machine that doesn’t match my expectations.
Pretty sure the Lenovo X1 Extreme matches or beats the MacBook Pro in performance, portability, ergonomy, ports and most of all a great keyboard.

That was kind of what I was hinting at. Malware is a pain, but if you don't visit suspect sites, you should be fine.

I think a lot of us have desktop mentalities with laptop expectations. What I mean is that we expect to pick and choose the peripherals we like, but want it delivered as an all-in-one. I just don't see how that won't lead to disappointment eventually for everyone because something you like is not always going to be something I like. That's part of the bargain of buying into all-in-one systems.

Keyboards are very personal items and maybe that's why people get so hot and bothered beyond what you would otherwise expect for the actual cost and inconvenience of their issues. People have widely varying preferences and a change that is going to make you happy is going to make a lot of other people unhappy.

Could you just use an external keyboard? If they did go back to the old switches (that hurt my hands), I'd be unhappy with the move, but not unhappy with the laptop. I'd just start packing my own keyboard again like I did for years.

Anyway, I do think they're serious about the laptop market. The latest batch of 2018 machines definitely came to play.

Thats a nice machine and if I couldn't have a Mac, the Lenovo P1 would be in the top 5 options. At the same time, it isn't much cheaper compared to the MBP and the battery life is disappointing...

It can be cheaper if you time it right with the incentives, I was looking at the X1E at Christmas and you could get a nicely configured machine for about 2,000. The keyboard is top notch, I heard the trackpad is decent, and battery life is ok. I give Apple credit in squeezing out a lot of life from their batteries, but by the same token, the battery [in the lenovo] is not glued in and easily replaced compared the cost and major effort (new top case) for the MBP.

o_O I've never had a single virus on any on the windows machines in the last 15 years. How do even people get those? Just get a ublock origin (free) for chrome, some antivirus like avira/avast (also free) and don't go to dodgy websites. It's just as secure as the macs are if some common sense is applied.

Is Apple pushing us to iPad Pros
I think more likely Apple is just slapping the "Pro" label around to pretend they produce professional devices.

what Apple is thinking these days and if they just aren't that "into" the laptop market anymore?
Iphones + services make 10 times more profit than Mac sales. So Timmy, being a great CEO and a terrible visionary leader, just went where the money is.

My take on the state of the MacBook Pro is that that Apple's mentality is that the iPad will over take the MacBook Pro, and they have a good reason for pushing the iPad over the MBP. They get a 30% cut of all app sales.

Sure, and that's why they spend $$$$ on R&D for Mac laptops for all the redesigns and non-trivial changers instead of just selling the old good chassis people are used to...

Battery life disappointing on the X1 Extreme or the P1? I didn't even mention the P1 because I think in regards to performance it is much better than the Macbook Pro...mainly because of good thermals. I wished Lenovo started doing 3:2 aspect ratios...or atleast 16:10.

If you go to the Thinkpad subreddit they have a corporate discount code that is pretty much available year round...30% off all thinkpads.

Yep, lenovo always has sales. As mentioned above, you can get 30% off year round if you're ever in the market. I am still deciding on what my next laptop is going to be. I have until April to decide.

Yeah, I'm tying to decide if I want to sell my MBP and jump ship. Do I sell now for a decent amount, and get a Lenovo/Razer/[insert maker here] or roll the dice on it and having to deal with a possible keyboard failure down the road.

There are advantages for my changing platforms that are unique to me, and so while macOS offers some niceties, I may be better off with windows at this stage. I may throw up my laptop on swappa or ebay for giggles and see if I get a decent offer.

Lenovo X1 Extreme $ 2,235.48 w/tax
Wow, that's a really nice price. How are you liking your Lenovo?

Yep, we don't want to derail the thread, but I will to bring this back on topic, that the Apple's decisions on the design of the laptop have made me rethink why I use a Mac, sadly.

I understand your feelings. For me, Mac and the compatibility between macOS and iOS is the reason why I use iPhone. However, today's Apple doesn't care that much about Mac line-up and wants us to migrate to iOS devices. However, although iOS is great and the iPad Pro might be the best tablet by far, it is still far from running x86 applications.
After many issues recent MacBooks faced,I sold my 15" MacBook Pro and iPad Pro then passed to iMac for now and think it was the best choice I made. Also, I bought a basic 13" MacBook Pro nTB to use on the go.

not that bad really, considering mobile/tablet market is taking over as a common media consumption device. They're expensive for the common mail/some documents/youtube videos device, and frankly, iPad can take care of that.

I also don't agree that they don't care about the Mac Line-up. MacBook Pro has been updated on schedule, MacBook Air has just been updated and is also good, and Mini has made a surprise resurrection (and it's as good as ever).
And in 2017 they released the iMac Pro.

iMac is taking time, so is the Mac Pro, I admit that.

Went with a Xiaomi Mi NoteBook Pro, it mimics the MacBook design (not quite there but still good looking) it runs flawlessly and I LOVE the machine.

Best decision ever made, i get ports, upgreadability, latest gen CPU all at a fraction of the price (the 15 inches with all best and whistles was 700$).

Miss OS X, but the old one (Leopard, Snow leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion and such) not so much the late versions.

Digging quite a lot Windows 10 (unexpected!!)

The surfacebook 2 also crushes it.
It does? The i5 in 13" is dualcore with intel HD620, and the i7 is older and inferior CPU.
frankly, the i5 in 13" is faster than the i7 in surfacebook 2...

the 15" is limited to 16GB of RAM. and is 1866Mhz and has a quad-core CPU.
13" MBP is 2166MHz and 15" is 2400MHz...

It also doesn't have TB3 external ports (my 1TB thunderbolt3 superfast external NVMe disk is crying)

It also has 2x slower write speeds for same capacity SSD.

In terms of GPU, GTX1060 vs Vega20 is head to head...

Not sure if that's exactly "crushing it in performance"...
Frankly, the i5 13" macbook pro is probably faster than the 15" surfacebook 2 in terms of CPU.

Whatever :D
Lenovo i bet is great, surface book 2 is overpriced for what it is.
LOL!
SurfaceBook 2 13" quadcore with 16GB of ram and 512GB SSD costs 2299$.
MacBook Pro 13" quadcore with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD costs 2199$ :D

And with MAcBook Pro you get faster SSD, faster RAM, faster CPU, and much much more external bandwidth via 4 tb3 ports.
this is ridiculous, and they say Macs are overpriced?!

Really do not care that much if legal, I care if it works :p I let companies fight between them, Apple has Qualcomm to think about now, for the opposite reason, using other's patent without paying ;)

Yeah, and that cannot be underestimated. I just used airplay to easily send some photos from my iPhone to the Mac. Of all of the integration, I do enjoy using messages on the Mac. Is that worth using a Mac over a PC? I don't think anyone can answer that for me, its one of those advantages to stay within the apple ecosystem.

I'm contemplating my laptop future as I sit here with my 2014 MBP, which has a letter T that doesn't register pushes but for some reason causes the laptop to not load properly at boot up (gives me a lightning bolt in a circle icon that I can only bypass by holding Command at startup). So now my laptop has a keyboard on top of itss keyboard (the apple Magic keyboard). The pricing of the new MBPs and MPA seems so stupid to me right now, especially given the number of issues I see people having that are still keyboard related. I also can't believe that if I want the newest model, I have to get one with the stupid Touch Bar.

I've posted this before, but after comparing the 2015 design vis-a-vis the 2016 design (when the latter first came out in November 2016), I bought the 2015 and never looked back. Still runs GREAT, good keyboard, no problems.

All in all, the BEST computer-buying decision I've ever made.
I'll use the 2015 until it breaks or becomes totally obsolete (and if it's still working, I'll still keep using it).

Sometimes, "newer" just ain't "better"...
