as I’m raring to for the svelte design

I have to be honest...

I don’t really understand the need for even thinner on something the size of the 15 inch models in particular.

I really feel like my 2015 15" is thin enough as it is… And honestly you get much thinner on something still that physically large and I just start to get worried about its durability.

I've seen some people review the 2015 models and are still happy with them these days. If the number of 2015 refurbs sold is high enough hopefully that might get Apple to think about why those machines are still popular in 2018/2019.
Is your 2017 working well? I believe you have the 8GB ram and 256 SSD?(correct me if wrong)
I had previously looked at a used 2015 13 inch but when I priced out cost of battery replacement etc, it was difficult to pay all the costs as it is 4 years old. So now I am giving a serious look at the exact refurb model you have which should do the basic needs I am looking for and hopefully still work well for 4 or 5 years(I hope).

Yes, you can see my current MBP specs in my sig. It is a wonderful machine, fast and the display is beautiful.. I have no complaints at all. I would buy this same exact model, refurbished and all, again today if needed.

Mac's are the best consumer computers on the market. iPhone's are the best phones. iPad's are the best tablets. And the Apple TV is the best streaming device.

That said.... for other "PRO" uses... ie: machine that does a specific task for a job.... Apple's options are limited....

Simple example... our office is full of Mac lovers.... but our machines to process 3D laser scans from commercial surveying equipment.... all those programs are only on Windows machines.

Plenty of other "work" cases where Windows is the only option.

Apple's "Pro" machines primary seem to be targeted at video editors..... ie: render stuff in Final Cut really fast..... I can't image what percentage of the market that is.

Actually they did give someone power over the Mac (and other product) teams, Jony Ive, an industrial designer, in 2015. He was dropped back to head of design in Dec 2017. But by then ...
OH WOW!!! I missed that point. Things make more sense now. Ok, maybe they will make a better move on the next model then.

I kinda disagree with you on that. Macbook Pro got updates yearly but some of them were quite late like 2016 and 2018 updates. Also, "making always thinner and shiny" habit led to major problems like keyboard, T2 chip, overheating and throttling issues. MacBook Air got update like more than 3 years and Mini got it after 4 years which are insane. I like the way how Mini is more powerful than before. Not changing the chassis is not a problem for me but that thing definitely needs more cooling. However, for the MacBook Air things got a bit complicated. They have added finally a retina screen but have risen the price just below to the MacBook Pro 13 which makes it quite unattractive. Also, that 8th gen. Y-series cpu should have been inside the Macbook 12". Now, I really don't know what they are going to do with macbook line-up.
MacBook Air got the cpu of Macbook 12". Then, are they going to kill the fanless model? And, the cpu that MacBook Air should have get is inside the nTB MacBook Pro 13". I thought they would kill the nTB MacBook Pro and replace it with Air.

I agree with most of things here. But if you look at the ipad and iphone line-up, it's the same. Messy and overlapping products, this is apple's general problem: confusing product line-up. This is actually the only "non-steve jobs" thing apple did recently, and it's the biggest problem.

Also, I think Mini is fine with cooling. I mean, i'm happy with mine.

Yeah I agree they have always been notoriously putting ports on their products that are not widely supported. But in those times they also had useful ports. The thing that was stunning this time was the "all in" approach and going from one set of technologies to one choice and one choice only. It all feels like someone from the iPhone/iPad team showed up and was given power in the MacBook team. Either way I think I'm jumping in my Delorean and heading back to 2015 lol.

They did? Before I bought the 2012 rMBP; i had the unibody. had to carry MDP dongles with me. I also had to carry FW dongle, because they killed FW400 before it was dead.

Then I had to replace whatever i had in the ExpressPort 34 with thunderbolt.
Before that (2006), They didn't have VGA (by far the most common projector standard, and also low-end monitor standard) and you needed DVI-VGA adapter.

They did have USB. But i really don't use it. I have the old keyboard connected on it because the new one was out of stock. For everything else i have USB-C cables pretty much. And i much prefer a single-do-it-all breakout dongle than 3 different dongles you needed with the 2008.

The price though...atleast for me haha. I really like the Huawei Matebook X Pro as well...concerned about the support if there is any issue though.
I did a breakdown a little earlier;
the 13" surface pro spec for spec is 200$ more expensive than 13" macbook pro and has worse performance on RAM, SSD and CPU.
the 15" is a joke.

Nope. No interest in "jumping ship". As far as I am concerned Apple still makes the best computers and OS on the planet. Your mileage will vary.

But when I rip the display from the keyboard on a MacBook Pro 13 it does not boot up. Maybe not having a power button on the display has something to do with it.:)

Bottom line, Surface Pro (and Surface Books) target a slightly different audience.

I bet!
That's why stating (not you i cant remember who) something like "Surfaces crushes macbook pro in power" is simply wrong. It doesn't, and it doesn't at a higher price to boot.

I'm not a fan of "ripping screens" off laptops and touchscreens on desk computers. I still haven't found a workflow that would suit me in that manner. If i went the windows route again, I'd go for a powerful tower and a powerful laptop without a touch screen

Not interested in jumping ship just yet here. When I find a computer, made by another manufacturer, that can integrate seamlessly with my iCloud account, and can handle Handoff and Continuity with my iOS devices, I may have to reassess my options. There is some attractive hardware from other manufacturers, but there is much to be said about the way macOS, iOS, watchOS, tvOS and iCloud all integrate so well.

You are right.

For actual real alternatives to the MBP [13 + 15”] there are actually not that many. And cost wise when they are compared directly [not on sale] they are comparative.

Really I would say the only real alternatives [for me] are :

Primary options.
Lenovo P1 [has that terrible thinkpad logo on the palmrest, but otherwise great]
Razer Blade - new models coming out look awesome. Only negative for me are the green ports and terrible logo.
HP Zbook G5 [360] - looks great but some reviews not so good.
Dell XPS - Great specs but I personally cannot buy a Dell again. The ‘carbon fibre’ is the main detractor for me.

Secondary options
Surfacebook 2 - issue is no TB3 and dated elsewhere now.

I wouldn’t compare anything else apart from the above, given service, returns, reputation etc.

There was a speculation that when MBA came out, consumers voted with money, and they voted for thinner. So despite what the vocal forum majority thinks macbook pro should look like, the silent minority thinks it should be light and thin.

in any case.. if MR designed the macbook pro, it would be this:

I vaguely remember that you posted a thread about buying a new MBA 2018, and that you were pretty happy with it. It looks like you returned it and got a refurb 2017 MBP. I assume keyboard issues weren't the reason, since the 2017 models certainly had their share of problems......which is why we now have the 3rd gen keyboard. Anyway, I was wondering why you swapped to the 2017 MBP? I am considering replacing my 2014 MBA (which has been a great machine) in a year or so with the new MBA, so I would be interested in any issues or problems that you encountered.

I personally think Lenovo makes the best laptops in the world. And this is coming from someone who has owned many Macbook Pro's, Powerbooks, iBooks, and the new Macbook Air. My thinkpads are better. Linux is better than Mac OS if you're a developer, period. There's no comparison. Windows 10 is better if you need your computer for work at any major company. Mac OS is better for creatives but their hardware is not as good as Lenovo's. Type on a Thinkpad and handle one and you can feel the difference. The keyboard is amazing and Thinkpads are more sturdy. You can toss them around without worry, use them outside without worry, etc etc etc.

Actually, I never bought the MacBook Air. I was still in the process of doing my usual research when I got interested in video editing and felt that I was better off with a pro type of machine rather than the Air. I would have went ahead with the MBA purchase had I not gotten interested in video creation because the 2018 MBA is an amazing machine. I went with a refurbished 2017 MBP because I was able to get this machine for less money after tax than the 2018 MBA is before tax. I watched dozens of videos from well-known reviewers/owners and only one of them had any keyboard problems with the 2017 MBP, so I figured it was worth the risk.

If you're thinking about the 2018 MBA, I say go for it - it's an amazing machine. The T2 chip offloads much of the work from the CPU and that makes it seem more powerful than the specs would suggest. Just keep in mind that the MBA is not a MBP, even though it performs well, and many people seem to miss that important fact. The 2018 MacBook Air can edit 4K video, but it's not a good idea to do it often on that machine.

Well, looks like I sold my laptop, I'm a little shocked, perhaps it was a tad under priced but it was priced right in the middle of other sales. The return on my money looked good until the fees hit  but all is good.

I'm on a backup laptop for the time being, while I nail down what to get in its place. Provided that the seller isn't high maintenance and gives me a lot of headaches (I pray that doesn't happen, my past couple of experiences were that), I'm fairly at peace with the decision.

you had the 15" if memory serves me right?

I bought the 13" and just about everything is better than on the 15"
