That is not really informative: 'it is kind of meh'.

KB is solid. Display is only ok, and was expecting more. Windows performance is ok, but graphics is somewhat washed out compared to running Fedora LIVE on a USB stick.

Guess my expectations were just a tad too high. Could be a Windows thing and maybe there are some tweaks I’m missing...?

So, I got a Lenovo TP X1 Carbon, 6 Gen. Has the Hi-Res, Matt display. Running Win 10, and to me it's kind of "Meh". The Keyboard is really nice, admittedly. However, the rest is just really underwhelming. Could be that it's Windows, but not overly impressed.

Booted up a LIVE version of Fedora 29, and it runs better off of USB than Windows does on the SSD...
What linux program are you using for music?

I don't think Macs ever were speediest all around , but they were definitely exceptional at certain things and those things were focused around work and productivity .
As for gaming experience , I don't think it ever existed, the only game I had on PowerBook was "tranquility" I think it was called , with randomly generated music and geometric shapes , they only had a version for Mac on power and sgi workstations on mips initially, which made so much more appealing :)

Oh dear, you grew up without Pathways into Darkness, Marathon, and Myth, didn't you... :(

As I type this on my company issued 2017 MBP 15... I backspace to fix the double strikes. I bang harder on the keyboard to get some to type. I constantly have to deal with dongle hell just to do my daily job functions. I don't have the physical keys I need to touch type my way through my job.

I am a HUGE Apple fan. I have been an all in guy for a decade plus. But this is just getting ridiculous. I'm serious considering bouncing off to Linux because M$ is just not an option in my mind. I'm not going back to virus hell. I'm just wondering if I'm alone? Is this part of the plan? Is Apple pushing us to iPad Pros? It just feels like I got a "MacBook Plus" not a "Pro" machine. By that I mean it seems like somebody let a marketing person convince them that they could up sell people out of MacBook with bells and whistles and didn't bother giving a Pro line machine features and function I needed.

Again, I'm not some Windows or Android zealot here to start a flame war. Just a hardcore Apple guy wondering what Apple is thinking these days and if they just aren't that "into" the laptop market anymore?

Yup, they are not for pros anymore...

Those at the back are recent models.

On the other side - is there anything on MacOS that starting from Finder would allow me to open one image file from directory and just scroll to the next one without explicitly loading it upfront? Like on Windows I can double click one file and then just use arrow keys to display another one. In Finder I need to select all of them first and only then open Preview. I tried different, hefty priced, applications from App Store but they require you to open the application first and select directory from within it.

Put the finder in some list view where all the files are underneath each other. Select the first one, hit the spacebar to open preview, use the arrow down the select the next file and the preview window will show it without closing/reopening.

I brilliantly solved the problem by buying a 2007 17” MacBook Pro. I absolutely love it, in fact way more than my troublesome 2013 Retina.
I run Snow Leopard on it (even though I plan to update it to Lion or ML) and it flies, I have no reliability issues, no stupid slowdowns from useless features.
I won’t be installing 10.15 on my Retina MacBook Pro either, as it already slowed down dramatically with 10.14, and I don’t want iOS on my MacBook PRO.

Sorry you have a problem. I'm just reporting here that I've been buying 2015,2016,2017 macbooks each year, and 2016,2017,2018 macbook pros (2 13" and 1 15"), fortunately none of them had keyboard issues. Is it maybe because I only upgrade my laptop each year, so the keyboard hasn't acted up? I don't know. I guess I'm just lucky.

I understand the frustration with the butterfly keyboard. I have a 2014 MBA, and will hold off as long as possible before . I want to stay with MacOS, but need to see how the keyboard holds-up with real world use on the 2018 MBA. Some folks have reported problems, and at this point it doesn't seem to be as big of an issue as before....but, definitely too early to tell. Anyway, my preference is to replace my current MBA with the new one if it proves to be reliable. My 2014 MBA has been the best computer I ever owned, so it’s a hard act to follow.

As OP pointed out, I sometimes wonder if Apple is just biding it's time with their laptops while they focus on the iPad Pro as an alternative device. In Tim Cook's heart, I think he believes the iPad is the future and is the better choice for the typical consumer, and iOS 13 might be another step in that direction. I don't necessarily agree this approach, but I think it may well be Apple's long term strategy. Also, they might think entry level consumers are better off with the base iPad ($329) plus Mac Mini ($799). Assuming most people have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse laying around the house, this setup might be a better option than paying $1200 for a laptop.......at least in Apple's eyes.

Time will tell.

iOS Devices will be dead without MacOS, why? Because iOS apps are built by developers using MacOS devices.

This and more this. Not only that but macs are the heart of Apple. Imagine an Apple without macs at all. It’s hard to do that. I do know they all of a sudden seem much less attractive to buy a phone from.

As the Mac falls so does Apple. I’ve heard it all. They’re not as profitable so they don’t focus and rightly so blah blah blah. iOS mainly matters. Blah blah.

And so now we have a video service that’s getting focus?? I guarantee that will never be profitable for years if at all. It’s just bizarre. And it doesn’t even matter. You focus on Mac because its by far your most important product. Even if the revenue streams say otherwise. There’s no excuse for not increasing marketshare in the pc world.

asus has to make computers to compliment windows. some linux.
asus therefore needs to be better than dell, lenovo, HP etc to survive.
 runs on 

I just couldn't disagree more with this statement. I don't think we are talking about a "minor and major issues" which is "no different than any other company that makes computers."
It is very different from most other companies, that makes computers. You have to try very hard for so many users, many with significant investments into the operational environment, to start switching platforms. For many it is going to be a several years process which requires a lot of thinking and consideration of inquired costs and lost productivity. It's not just about a screwed up keyboard, Apple as a company is in war with their users, attacking users freedom of choice. The includes freedom to choose a keyboard on "professional work" laptop with full functionality, including functional and escape keys, freedom to upgrade laptop with components at market rate, freedom to service computers users own and paid a full price for at independent service provider and just so much more.

It is great that you like MacOS X , many of us do, but far superior in every way? I think the MacOS X is well balanced and is a great OS, but there are so many ways that it is no match for windows, for example font scaling that does not exist on MacOS X and works great on Windows and Linux which is extremely important in the day of high resolution screens. The other obvious one would be performance - including game performance and application performance. I don't use windows daily, but one has to admit that it performs way better than MacOS X or Linux for majority of applications, including 3D design, CAD, Office suite, Gaming etc.

Again, it's not about a single particular issue, it's not like "the graphics card gpu separate from he circuit board just months after the recall was over."
This is about what Apple is now and about what they do.

I couldn't agree more with everything you have said. It sums up the situation of users perfectly. Thank you.

Reasons why I prefer the MacBook (Pro)/OS X;
Desktop clutter: I have 10-15 programs open sometimes and switching from one to another with alt-tab or windows-tab isn't always making me find the right one fast. On Mac OS I use different spaces to group several apps and that makes life so much easier... Swiping with four fingers to switch back and forth is superfast.
Trackpad: Dunno about your X1E, but mines trackpad is so much smaller and utterly useless compared to the MacBook.
Spotlight: cmd+spacebar is so much faster and cleaner to find stuff. On Windows the big square that pops up from the taskbar is no match.
Preview: hitting the spacebar to quickly preview a document before opening it is such a timesaver sometimes...

If some of these features exist in Windows 10, please enlighten me, cause that would make my life much easier :)

I don't have anything on my desktop except for VMware and the trash can. I use the taskbar for my most important programs and everything else is grouped in the Start Menu by category. Not only that you can right click and make everything disappear off the desk top. For me the Mac is more cluttered than I like with the dock. I have the Task bar set to disappear when not in use. But this is just another example of how Mac users don't really know how to use Windows and instead of appreciating it for what it is, dis it for not being like MacOS.

The only thing I would like in W10 is the equivalent of Preview. Don't buy it that Spotlight is better, just looks different. I hated Finder passionately. Each to their own.

I had tried those but at the end I gave up on looking for this feature. The way it works on macOS is just better. This is a typical example of small things that do make a difference in every day usage, where people have an alternative for Windows. These alternatives do not work as well..

It's not a solution if you need to run fairly recent operating systems. TurboTax, which I'm using a lot this weekend, requires Sierra. The 2007 displays do eventually go as well.

agree %100 :) reckon everyone needs to try itself to know how smooth OS X is on this

I found both on win were slow on pdf and would not do raw files and some other files well at all and would totally mess up some simple text docs etc..

one of my peeves with windows is this and of course the file explorer lack of customizing it truly the way you want no file tagging and so on :)

Do people actually use file tagging and all that?
Interesting. I learn something new every day...

File tagging is an outrageously useful feature for a busy professional, or anyone for that matter. It allows you to “walk away” from just about anything and then come right back to the task just by invoking the tag, which of course pulls everything related to the task right back into one place making it easy to pick right back up from where you left off.

The basic tagging scheme I use as follows:

Red - Class A (insert description) Files
Orange - Class B Files
Yellow - Class C Files

“Insert description” can apply to any number of task type..for example, if you have a legal case , “ Class A case Files”. Or, for a project , “Class A (job#) Files. The three levels of import refer to the priority level and as the priority drops for a particular file, or if circumstance changes the priority of a particular file task, it’s a breeze to downgrade the file class. Once the task’s been completed..I tag the file, or document, blue, which cues it for archive making it simple for someone else to assign the files to the proper archive on a slow day. Give it a try.
