Apple is unbelievable. I just realised:

To even be able to upgrade the graphics to a Vega you need to select the mighty expensive 8 core version. The Vegas are not available for 6 core models. (German store)

Just unbelievable.
Yep, that's what they did. When Vega was introduced you couldn't get it with the 2.2 CPU, now they went even further. Polaris was introduced almost exactly 3 years ago, offering it still as a base option on one of the most expensive laptops in the world is just insulting. They should just introduce 30W Vega pro 10 or something and use that as a base with upgrade path to higher ones regardless of CPU, that would simplify SKU's (if that was the goal).

windows improved a lot. Hope they come up with some nice themes instead of boring desktop they have now.
file systems too needs improvement lijke tagging/color code and searching..hope to see them in future.

You can check out some of the discussion of the X1E over here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/lenovo-x1-extreme.2134802/page-58#post-27357690

I posted a video here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/lenovo-x1-extreme.2134802/page-59#post-27373674

In short its a nice spec update with a better GPU and some nice display options.

Overall, I'm incredibly impressed with the my X1E, aside from a sexy design, its everything that the MBP should have been imo.
i expected they would make some design changes, like bigger touchpad and better fan positions. sad, it didnt happenned.
but, this current product line is not bad at all..

Rumors were swirling about regarding a 16" laptop, I guess that rumor has been put to rest.

I don't think we'll see much in terms of improved cooling, unless they beefed up the fans, and you're right the keyboard is sill the same flawed one, though with new materials it may be sturdy enough to withstand the issues that caused the others to fail.

16” might end up happening in 2020 alongside the Mac Pro at this point... At this point like I have said many times one should wait for the redesign... 10nm from Intel or whatever comes next alongside 7nm Navi

I was looking forward to a refresh to the magic keyboard (maybe even featuring the Touch Bar, since I finally got use for it)

2799, and all you get is a mere 256 GB and the lackluster, 555X right off the pages of prehistory?

Indeed. But at least you can upgrade to 560X for just 100$ :D

All joking aside, with this upgrade we get a 8 core CPU that is gonna throttle even more then the previous i9. Also, Apple is stuck on 256GB of storage for start, worst GPUs in any premium laptop out there, and 4th gen of failed keyboard design.

Who has ever released 4 keyboard 'redesigns' in 4 years?

Well, I would say MBP is selling really good, because Apple doesn't care in fixing the issues, or even giving us the modest upgrade. And they shouldn't. They are making more money by selling old GPU's with low storage, and upgrades cost a fortune. And all you get for it is lousy keyboard and throttling.

But greed will get to them in the end.

No question that its possible that we could see a 16" model next year. This year, I don't think that's going to happen though

I wonder about that report that said the 15" would increase in display size due to the bezel reduce?.. I don't know but I do hope for a redesign come 2020... I mean it's 4 years after all.

They need to revamp everything in the upcoming design from Macs to the accessories as a whole.

This is the sole reason why I am probably about to get my first PC laptop in about 15 years.

The GPU is a disgrace for the cost of the laptop.

For the price 512GB & 1TB, and Vega (15") should be the default spec simple as that, equally Apple holds all the cards so if you want to run macOS you have to dance to Apple's tune. Ultimately it's a monopoly so Apple simply charges the maximum it feels it can get away with. Apple's margins on it's upgrades must be stratospheric, which is sheer greed as they have deliberately engineered their products this way.

New 8 core CPU's, we'll see, equally the laws of physics haven't changed and I rather expect the same hopelessly inadequate cooling solution. Big numbers for bar talk, sales & marketing little else. 5GHz sounds impressive for a notebook, equally touching such numbers for a split second then rolling back to just over base CPU frequency due to poor thermals :(:mad:

I agree Vega should be default.. I mean if you do look at the 15" RX560 itself is really bad in terms of permanence in 2019.. That's the reason why I bought my 13" back in 2017 as I wanted some more power if I were to get a 15"

Apple either has to introduce a new model category as they did in 2012 with "Retina" or it will be 2020, if so it will very likely be more of the same; keyboard, ports, throttling, weak GPU's etc...

Reality is Apple not going to, as it's been "beating off" it's professional customers for years. Apple wants to produced simplified, dumbed down hardware for consumers who don't overly question. Personally I've thought for a long time that Apple does not have sales targets for the Mac, rather a revenue target, therefore producing fewer units delivering higher margins works for Apple and for that the consumer pays...

Yeah the MBP is due for a new case, I'm one of those people that believes Apple will transition to ARM next year. Intel with their MDS vulnerabilities only reinforce that mindset imo.

On another note, I have to believe the thermal issues the 2018 i9 will be considered childs play to what we'll be seeing in the octo-cores of the 2019 - or apple will be limiting the power/wattage to such a great deal that it will never be running at optimum speeds.

The end result of having such a closed, non-updateable, non-repairable machine is a shedding of the professional market sector. I don't think the 2019 MBPs are doing anything to tempt people on the fence to move over to windows.

People will still switch for the same reasons; lack of confidence in Apple, poor specs/delivery/usability and the spiralling prices. 2019 MBP certainly offers nothing to entice a return to Apple...

I am abandoning the ship due to security flaws of Intel and Apple admitting 40% fall in performance with later mitigations applied for intel flawed chips.

I woild return when Arm based macbook comes.
till then would use current 2013 late macbook pro for non banking and casual use .

I am planning to throw my current i5 4690k desktop out and pit ryzen 3 when it comes .

So I was unfortunately right, they launched updated MBP's today with a 4th Generation butterfly keyboard. Turns out it takes nothing but balls to keep trying over and over.

If by “balls” you mean, “a complacency of being unmotivated to innovate and improve like an underdog anymore,” then yes, I suppose that constitutes as “balls”.

Regarding ARM I believe they'll start with the MacBooks, this way they can differentiate between MacBook Air and a Macbook (ARM).

I believe that the recent problems regarding roadmap delays, thermal issues, supplying and in the end vulnerabilities will continue to push Ppple to put their A series on the Mac.

On the new cases I do hope it happens in 2020.. especially with more of a bezeless display (which would help the 15" becoming 16")... and navi 7nm on the GPU side of things

Vega was from the start limited to the higher MBP tier. Nothing has changed here. The 8-core MBP is same price as the previous mid-tier 6-core one. The main difference that there will be a substantial performance delta between the base 15" MBP and the mid-tier one.

Curious, are you moving to Windows? If so, you are doing it out of concerns for security? Ha..

I remember when Chromebooks were touting their Arm processors - I even got the Nvidia cpu Chromebook back in the day. The arm chromebooks were slower than ****. Of course this was 2013 or so. :p

Well ARM did come a long way from 2013... :p

Plus if Apple goes with ARM we know their A series blow everything else out of the water.

I guess you can count me in since I just ordered a Dell XPS desktop. We'll see how well it integrates, but I really don't have too much invested in the Apple ecosystem right now. .
I love my dell xps, having a Seagate external drive help transfer all my artwork, mp4 movies and music that can be imported into the XPS easily. Yesterday i sold my 2gen TV and replaced that with a firestick which is more user friendly and does not cut away. and i can watch a baseball game for free which i could not with that 2gen one.
there are great advisers here who are in the same "jump" boat as us.

Work gave me a USB C dock to use with my Dell XPS. Absolutely love it (the $160 one) --- I just plug it into the USB C port on the XPS and it goes out to 2 monitors and has all my cables managed (ethernet, usb 3, etc...). Dell did a good job with it - wakes up the laptop even when it is off.

XPS isn't bad - it has been perfected thanks to Dell's BIOS updates (make sure to stay up on those - reduces bluecsreens). --- The touch screen on the XPS 15 is to die for. Reading on it is very pleasant. The CPU is blazing. Runs Visual Studio 2019 like a pro. :)

No issues with my months old XPS 15 either. Wonderful touch screen, 16GB memory and 1TB SSD for about half of what Apple would get (1TB SSD option on a MBP is not priced well......).

Work got me the 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD XPS 15. Costco was all sold out of the model you got during black friday last year. :p

i settled for the XPS 13"non touch screen. i am amazed by the simple things dell adds such as the constant light on the power usb end when i need to plug the chord into the laptop. The light keyboard is incredible and the unit is extremely sturdy my cat cannot budge the laptop, she knock over the 2010air too easily.
