apple.com: they put a page up advertising their stuff, and listing the changes/features, all of which is true. To find it, you have to look for it - they're not bombarding the airwaves with ads, etc. That's not hype. Would you expect them NOT to have a page describing their new OS?

macrumors.com: where's the hype? All I see is thread after thread saying "it's a service pack." And these threads started from the day SL was announced.

There's been no hype. There's only been honest discussion: "it has some new features, but most of the changes are under the hood and not visible to users. it's a foundation for the future." It's been said over and over. That's not hype.

On Apple's site:

How do we verify a statement like that?

Oh, stop. That's mere puffery. You think they're going to say "maybe not the world's most advanced, but pretty good." ? Do you think anyone makes their buying decision by looking at the list of changes, ignoring it, and relying on "well, Apple says it's the world's most advanced, so therefore I will buy it!" Do you also object whenever a restaurant says "world famous!" ("they don't know about them in the czech republic!") Or when a commercial says that some fast food joint has the most delicious bacon burger?

You are being disingenuous. They're not hyping anything. Freaking microsoft hires rock bands and throws giant parties to celebrate their junk. All Apple did was post a web page, 99% of which is just a list of things that are new and changed. They aren't going around promising SL will revolutionize anything, and they aren't even going around saying people will see much different from Leopard.

Evidently you have low standards.

Evidently you have low standards.

I'm sorry, you are right. Apple should not make unverifiable characterizations of their products (like everyone else). Instead they should just post the source code and let us decide for ourselves.

Nonetheless, based on your answers, I assume all Apple would have to do to get you to stop complaining about "hype" is remove that statement?

Given that most people should not have tested it legally, this seems as if it may be a large waste of time. I like it, I would love to see aqua, but investing resources in improving the performance is not something I am disappointed about.

Snow Leopard is better then Leopard
Snow Leopard is better then Windows 7
Snow Leopard is better then Vista
etc, etc, etc...

iThink I am fine.
Snow Leopard is better than Leopard
Leopard is better than Windows 7
Windows 7 is better than Vista

I'm fine too! :)

Actually it's the world's most advanced operating system (Leopard) Finely Tuned (Snow Leopard)

Heh, my C64 never crashed. Of course, you had to align the disk heads from time to time, but we're only talking software, right? :)

Sayin SnowMore To snowleopard!!!

Uh, it's slower on my MACBOOK PRO SD 13" 4GB, 7200RPM HD. Especially affected is QuartzGraphics, Effects are no longer smooth. THIS SUXXXXXXX.

My install went quite well and the speed difference is definitely noticeable.

I have one thing which is sort of bothering me though. I have a MBP with a multi-touch trackpad. If I call expose by swiping 4 fingers, then swipe the opposite direction to get rid of it, the windows go back to expose mode as soon as I release my hand. If anyone with a multi-touch MBP could test whether it works like this on his I'd be grateful as it worked well on Leopard.

Overall, though I'm quite happy with SL. Definitely not slower and unstable as the OP said.

Did you find a solution to this? I've noticed this as well.

You do not have to worry about it though.

Apple will be shipping snow leopard with the 32-bit kernel as the default on all but the latest macs and even those with the GM are reporting that their macs are installing with the 32-bit kernel.

It is funny that Apple produces both the hardware and software (Unlike MS), but MS still can ship a 64-bit OS (Kernel + Drivers) and Apple can't for all it's hardware.

you fail to see how things work here
it BOOTS in a 32 bit kernel. It is compatible with 64 bit apps. So even running the 64 bit kernel, any 64 bit app you run will still be 64 bit. The 32 bit kernel helps with compatibility.

If you want to boot in a 64 bit kernel, hold down 6 and 4 during boot.
However, the ONLY advantage to the 64 bit kernel (right now) is being able to recoginze over 32 gb of RAM. Do you have more than 32 gigs or memory?
No, I really doubt that you do

what happened to my menus

I had a more context menu when I would right click on a item and it went away how do I get it back?

Sl

First time poster, long time reader. I installed Snow Leopard tonight and am fairly impressed. It's my first upgrade since joining the Apple fan club last year, and although it took a bit longer than I anticipated to sort everything out, I'm where I was a couple of hours ago now, but with the new OS installed.

I read that people had had problems with installing over Leopard, so opted for a clean install. It's definitely faster for me at booting, searching, loading programs and the general day-to-day stuff, but I would have expected that having a fairly new macbook pro.

Seems like some of the argument here is that 'Apple rushed it' at the end; but I'm not sure I agree with that. Software is often sold before it is truly ready - to get the product out there before the competition. The early adopters will buy it, and bugs can be fixed later with service packs; Microsoft is just the same, as are most software developers in competitive markets.

I personally don't think it's fair to complain too much on the compatibility issues with older systems. It's just progress (although it's ok for me; I don't seem to have any issues).
I will agree that the installation wasn't completely straight forward though - I found myself looking round for extra drivers and such to sort out quick look playback of some of my vids, and went back to install a couple of the things that were missed off the install.

Has anyone else with a laptop trackpad using expose noticed that sometimes the windows get 'stuck' outside the screen...?

All in all happy though, lets hope that the next gen. of software for SL will utilise its 'brains'.

I wish I personally knew all of the complainers in this thread so I could come over and take a look at your systems and see how inflated you are making minor issues. Then, give me 20 seconds and I will solve most issues you seem to be experiencing.

The attitude here is amazing: $30 OS upgrade, "THIS SUXXXXXX". Go buy Vista Upgrade for $200 then.

I've been a Mac OS user for over 20 years. This is the worst release I can remember. Upgrade or clean install…Snow Leopard does not work properly. My feeling is that Snow Leopard was only designed for the latest Intel Macs, and those of us with first generation were given buggy hotfixes. Not impressed at all, especially when 90% of my previous upgrades went without a hitch.

Considering that I've had no problems on my 15" MacBook Pro (early 2006), I'd beg to differ. Actually, I feel that Snow Leopard runs faster on my 15" MacBook Pro than my 24" iMac (mid 2007).

You mean the "More" menu that let you run things like ClamXav on a file or folder? Yeah, that's gone for me too. It's weird because there still is a Contextual Menu Items folder and putting items in there does nothing.

It's been replaced with the new "services" stuff, that is context-sensitive. I had to spend 5 minutes rebuilding some automator actions I wrote for leopard, but now that i've done, the new system is much better as it promotes them the top menu (no more "more") and only shows me choices that correspond to whatever I've selected.

I hate it

I just upgraded, did not do a clean install....too much stuff on my macbook pro 13" to figure out how to do a clean install.

Safari crashes, everything is slow, not stable at all...

HATE IT!
