I'm almost disappointed that I wasted a DVD-DL on it.

I had Leopard running really smoothly... but after I had seen some benchies and reviews on how great SL is, I decided to give it a go. I honestly fail to see what all the rave is about. As expected, all of my drivers/extensions are now broken, but I guess I can't complain because the official OS isn't even out yet.

But... aside from a few UI improvments, I can't see what Apple has been doing with SL. I had Leopard highly customized, but it booted faster, had less quirks about it (but I guess you can always rely on having problems with a fresh build of an OS), used a similar amount of memory, and didn't crash right and left. I deleted all of the PPC code/languages from Leopard, and it was just about the same size as SL, in terms of space requirements, and booted a good deal faster. I don't have VMware Fusion or a lot of other apps installed on my SL installation yet, and SL still takes 40+ sec to boot, while Leopard takes < 30sec with a whole lot more installed.

But boot time really doesn't make a difference. My biggest problems are that: Expose lags TERRIBLY on my MB (Intel GMA X3100), iChat crashes whenever you try to start a video chat, the CPU fans seem to be running a lot harder( and more often), and there's just nothing "new". OpenCL/Grand Central/whatever doesn't seem to be doing anything for me in terms of processing power. I understand that the upgrade would only set me back $30, but I don't want to pay for *just* UI improvements.

I've only been using SL for an hour and I'm begging to go back. I definitely will not be purchasing SL when it comes out, for a long time anyways. I'm a student, and I bought my Mac because it was reliable and fast... and Snow Leopard just doesn't seem to be either.

Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?
I'd like to hear from others who have tried the Gold Master build.

So, you don't like the software you stole. So sad.

hint: buy a pc.

Yes, Snow Leopard sucks

I was hoping the "resend" feature would be worked out when going back in Safari, but there it is. Same is true of Firefox. Why does this happen?

Also, when I activate Excel for Mac, I get an error "out of memory."

The system is still prone to delays when browsing in either Safari or Firefox, and there are slight cursor delays.

I have a Mac Book Pro that's only a year old, so this is very frustrating.

I'm disliking Macs and considering a return to the PC soon.

I can't help but agree with OP. However, though I'm pretty pissed off with all Snow Leopard's problems (in my case, the Airport is completely wonky, everything the 10.5.8 and Airport firmware patches fixed is completely undone), I am also quite chagrined. One of the tried-and-true rules of Apple is this: early adopters always get ****ED. Hard. Really, I should have known better to install Snow Leopard right off the bat before it has some time to get streamlined and molded into better shape. As a recent PC switcher, it's been a breeze getting 10.5.8 up and running again. You just have to drag and drop your App icons!! Whoa, that's awesome!

I've had nothing but sweet bliss with Snow Leopard! I have actually found it more stable then Leopard. Especially Safari which kept beach balling me every min or so which made it useless. But now I can't even get Safari to crash!

I have had zero problems with 10.6 on my 2008 Mac Pro. I did a standard upgrade by booting from the upgrade DVD. It has been completely stable.

I don't use Safari as my main browser so I have never had a problem with it on 10.5.x or 10.6. I use Firefox and version 3.5.2 has been perfect. I run a decent of extension too.

I don't run a lot of obscure application or utilities on my Mac so that may be why my system has been so stable.

Then again, having been in computer industry since 1980, I know that when new software is first released, there are always problems that the testers did not find. It is impossible to duplicate all real world configurations in the testing lab and via beta test programs. So I expect a few problems to pop up and would have no problem reverting back to 10.5.8 if need be. I would not claim Apple is horrible if that is what I needed to do. I just don't get that mentality.

Considering the massive amount of under the hood changes, I am pleasantly surprised at how solid 10.6 really is. It will only get better as Apple fixes the problems that customers experience. what Apple did for the future with this release of Mac OS X is incredible. Just reading John Siracusa's article makes me quite optimistic.

Not impressed at all, constant graphics glitches, on my 3 month old mbp, dont see any speed improvements, same shut off and start up times, non fully 64bit , basically total waste of money and time.

You don't understand the point of the OS upgrade do you? How would *YOU* personally benefit from full 64-bit (I assume you mean 64-bit kernel extensions). Explain please? All of your arguments besides graphical glitches (which I personally have yet to witness on the multitude of SL systems I have seen) are stupid.

I don't like it either.

Never had problems with Adobe Illustrator before SL; it crashed 6 times in a two hour period today.

My Cintiq tablet had to be re-loaded to be recognized. My scanner had to be re-loaded. NeoOffice did not work and I had to load a different word processor.

This is worse than running a PC.

It does no good for those of us who have had rather smooth upgrades to Snow Leopard (myself included) to berate or try to discredit the people who have had terrible experiences. Apple is no magical company - this range of user experiences is to be expected with any .0 release.

It seems that most of the problems reported fall into the following catagories:

Adobe products (been covered ad nauseum)
Obscure products (developers responsibility to update for SL, not Apple's to try to ensure compatibility with every 2-bit app)
Legacy devices (see above)

A lot things need work, namely software and drivers, but otherwise it's pretty smooth.

Not impressed at all. Keeping it out of practicality (don't want to spend hours reverting), and certainly not out of quality.

Care to elaborate?

I love it, only problem I have is I can't do a time machine backup because my WD 320GB Passport always ejects unexpectantly and then OSX doesn't recognize it again until I re-format it.

How the hell can you "love it" then?

That's like taking your freaking car in to get the oil changed and now it only runs in 2nd gear.

No offense but some of you mac folk are weird.

No Doubt About It

Snow Leopard Sucks in so many ways. I am not sure I will get over my new grudge against Apple.

I have spent 4 days on the phone with Apple support, who are more than happy to help you keep developing their HALF DEVELOPED SOFTWARE as an unpaid BETA TESTER. Its funny, though... when I ask them to help me downgrade, they try to change the subject. They really don't want me to have a working computer, because they want to study the 20 + bugs, driver issues and incompatibility issues on my PC.

Final Cut Pro doesn't work. Did you think someone would want to edit video, Apple?

The sad part is, that I actually need my computer. I run my own business, and they're using me as a guinea pig.

I swear I don't have a victim complex. I have been a loyal, avid customer of Apple for years. This release is over the top. I won't trust a new upgrade from Apple again.

Not being able to back up every hour doesn't make my system not work. In fact its like I only temporarily don't have access to a perk of the system. Everything else is so much better than my experiences with windows, I love my mac.

Man, it's so weird that there are so many difference things happening with people with SL.

I upgraded, took half an hour and I love it, a few graphical glitches here and there, but apart from that I'm having a good time.

Why is it so different for many people?

Kind Regards

Meh it's not lazy to not do a clean install, sometimes you just have too much to re-install.

Why would a clean install make much difference anyway?
I upgraded and I'm going just fine.

Kind Regards

SL has been quicker, cleaner, and more stable for me for sure, not sure where all the problems are coming from.

maybe you're one of the lucky ones? ;-)

*I do have to say that it is faster than leopard. But this intermittent hanging just kills the entire experience!*

I thought SL was amazing when I first installed it as it was very very fast. Long story short, when I started using it, it knew it was rubbish. Freaking spinning beachballs every other minute, watching youtube can bring your computer to a halt, computer is also much hotter....

Upgrading to a new OS less than a month after release doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do if you rely on the computer for your business.
