Same issues here.

Fluctuating strength no matter my distance from the router. Also when it drops my connection sometimes it will ask me if I want to reconnect to the same router rather than just reconnecting on its own. Something is up since wi-fi on iPhone (3 iPhones in the house) was never an issue till yesterday

I just got off with applecare/AT&T. they had me do a restore and reset everything again. Its still not working. The applecare rep was nice enough to call to the apple retail store and have a new phone pulled aside for me, he said he thought it was a hardware issue. Hopefully my fourth 3GS will be the winner. The apple rep I spoke to was great, it was perfect customer service.

Yeah, my signal strength is all over the place, although tests have shown that download speeds are very good. I think it's weird that the number of bars you have showing isn't really correlating to signal strength.

I have experienced some network drops though, and in tests against my 16gig 3G (I have a white 32gig 3GS) the download speeds are significantly improved (even when showing fewer bars of wifi) but my upload speeds are lagging behind the 3G. Weird.

My Ipod touch (2.2.1) is getting nearly 2x the download speed as my 3Gs.

20 Tests ran with SpeedTest each device.

Touch is averaging - 4.2 mb
3Gs - is averaging - 2.7 mb

Quoting another post I made, (Sorry! didnt see this one)

Here are my tests results.

Using 20m/2m Charter Cable with D-Link DGL-4300 Router. (Sitting about 12 inches from router)

20 tests per device.
Average Upload/Download Speeds Using "Speed Test App"

3Gs ( Of course 3.0 OS) - Average DL 2.7 mb (Min/Max Range 1.8-3.2) / Average Upload 2mb
IPod Touch (2.2.1 OS) - Average DL - 4.2 MB (Min Max Range 3.6- 4.4) / Average Upload 2mb

I will update later with the 3G (Wife has it and shes at work) (Currently has 3.0, have 2.2.1 on Backup)

I am still having wifi issues even after I reset everything possible to reset. I called apple and explained and they told me to call AT&T. I asked what wifi had to do with AT&T and the rep said that is what the product specialist told them and there is nothing more they could do. They transferred me to AT&T who apparently isnt open yet. wtf
Um, yeah, what does this have to do with them? Just because it's 'wireless'? :)

Anyway, somewhat similar issues here with 32GB Black. Posted in the other thread that I'm seeing good speed (13/1.5 approx), but performance is awful. App Store doesn't come up sometimes, the Sirius app never can login at all.
And both of these (and other things) work fine on the cell network.

AND, my MBP 17 is fine, as it always was. I even had an iTouch (1G) on 3.0 for the last month, and that was fine. So, this looks like a 3GS hardware issue. I've tried the usual ideas, reset network settings, rebooted, etc.

No change. I'll check at the Apple Store in the next day or so if there's not an answer on the net.

What router are you using?

I have 20/2 Cable and my ipod and i touch as you can see are only getting a tiny fraction of that.

Im on 11g, 100% Signal Strength ( only a foot away from the router) my laptop is getting 15mbs, my wired computer is getting 19.5

Yet my iphone and even my itouch are getting 2-4mbs

Well apple gave me another phone and it's having the same issues. Must be a software issue but it's strange as my 3G was running 3.0 and it was fine. Errr

Just got back from the Apple Store. We tried 3 different replacement phones, all had the same problem. Genius said my best bet is just to hold on take one for now, and wait and see if Apple issues any official fix/recall. Or, if that doesn't work, to just wait 2 or 3 weeks and come in and get another replacement, since it might be that the whole batch is bad.

Not a perfect solution, but Apple Support has been great about it so far, and they're clearly doing everything they can for the moment.

If you meant me, the Verizon Fios Actiontec. There's a thread in th e main iPhone forum about this possibly being an issue with the router, but my MBP and iTouch on 3.0 are fine.

I know the router has issues, and perhaps the 3GS wifi ran into one of these; I'm thinking about a new wifi router (since no one sells APs at a reasonable price any more... ).

I have no idea if the 3GS wifi hardware is different from 3G/touch, since that speed hasn't been increased. The cell data radio must have changed, since it supports the new 7.5Mb cell networks coming soon.

I've got a Genius Bar reservation for Monday, so let's see if they think this is the same issue or not.

Also, when I'm there, I can try their wifi and see if I get the same problems or not. I had it working at work yesterday, and don't remember issues, so all of this could be a router incompatibility.

just spoke to applecare again, it seems every tech I talk to says this is the first they heard of any problems. He recommended I tried the phone out on a few friends routers to see if the problem can be tracked back to my router, however its only a couple months old, and nothing else id having a problem connecting. The phone connects fine but it is all over the place as far as strength and getting kicked off to 3G. Hopefully the problem can be resolved soon as the 3GS is kick ass in every other aspect (so far at least)

Swapped my phone out at the apple store.

Same problem, 3GS considerably slow in WiFI and Signal Strength compared to my Ipod Touch and my wifes 3g.

Also tried a new router, old router was a DLink and New Router is a NetGear Dual Band.

I think this is a 3.0 OS problem. I have a 3G 8GB that I have had for about 2 weeks, previously had one for about 8 months (had to replace with refurbished one because of pixel damage) anyway...

Once I installed 3.0 update I started having problems with the Wifi connection, first it would show the connection then connect and all at once everything is gone like there is no network. My MacBook connects fine along with the 360 and PS3. I went to the parents house and tried connecting to their Verizon DSL router and still the phone shows no connections at all after first connecting for a few seconds.

What gets weird with the situation is my cousin syncs his phone on my computer so he installed the update too from my iTunes and his WiFi works fine. I am not 100% convinced it is a 3.0 OS problem. I installed the update the day it came out and had to continuously attempt to get the server to cooperate. He did his today with no problems at all on first try. I don't know if that played a part in it.

It may be a combo of 3.0 and 3GS, since that's the one combo most people haven't had to play with. All the developers and testers has 3.0 on a touch or 3G, and (as I said) my touch is fine (heck, all it has is wifi. :) ). So, it could be something weird in the 3GS, which, of course, only has 3.0.

I am having the same issue. I have to toggle the wifi off then on to get it to connect. I just updated my router firmware to see if that would fix anything but nope. I have a 32g Black 3gs. I never had issues with my 3g.

I am running a Linksys WRT300N router. What routers are you guys using? I have been reading up and it seems that people with N routers (non apple) are having issues.

i am not sure if i am having the same problem, as I haven't had wifi drop, but I do see fluctuations in signal strength that I didn't see with my 1st gen iphone. The serious issue I am having is that Youtube for example is very very slow on wifi, even though speedtest is showing 7.5mbps

I'am also have the same problem with wifi on my 3GS. Sometimes the signal is strong other times its not. My iPod touch 2G does not have this problem. Both are running OS 3.0.

I am running a linksys wrt54g2 router, tried upgrading the firmware but didnt help. what brand router is everyone using? maybe its the router incompatibility or something, although the router is pretty new.

Hey, I've got a black 16gb and having similar issues: I think it's router related, my girlfriend's parent's BT Voyager 2091 is working with it fine, the signal bars drop occasionally but with no drop in speed or connection, the phone only takes a few seconds to join from sleep and joins every time. My problems lay in my home Netgear DGN2000; it will take up to a minute to join from sleep and sometimes not at all even though automatically join known networks is set, it will also drop after a matter of minutes, I've tried changing security to no avail, I'm next going to try a different channel and setting the mode to b/g only since my broadband is only 1.8m

I'm annoyed cause I got this router to replace my old Zoom adsl router as it refused to work with macs and throughout all of this my gf's crummy ISP provided g-router has always worked first time everytime lol

more annoyed cause my iPod touch 2g worked perfectly with it

does seem as though there are known issues with netgear and iPhones though :(

I'm having issues on my 3G after upgrading to 3.0 - if I remove any encryption from my network, it works fine. Otherwise, with WEP or WPA, I get dropouts and "unable to connect to network" errors all over the place. No issues with my 2G Touch or my wife's 3G with 3.0

Does anyone else get this screen when you hit go?

My wifi bars seem about normal when it does work, and even when I'm pretty far through quite a few walls a speed test with speedtest.net gives me about 11,000 down and 1900 up which is almost what my ISP provides me. BUT, half the time my wifi is off an I go to turn it on then pull up Safari and hit go it'll instantly pop up with this screen and just stay there doing absolutely NOTHING. I have a Netgear WNR3500. When I called Apple the lady suggested enabling 'ask to join networks' which i always disable for some reason, just personal preference. I'm gonna try this and see how it goes throughout the night. But yeah anyone else get this screen?
