I am having an issue with my wi-fi as well. Signal strength varies, router is 6 ft. from me. It also seems to forget the WPA2 password randomly. I didn't notice this password issue with 3.0 on my old 3g, but didn't pay attention to any signal fluctuation possibilities. I am using an Airport extreme base station with latest firmware and airport utility version. I also noticed I couldn't fully connect to my parents wi-fi, kept getting a 169.x.x.x address. My 3g with 3.0 connected just fine.

I was also just curious about cell signal strength and my phone fluctuates frequently in my apt. One minute it will be on edge with 5 bars, then drop to 1 bar. It will stay that way for a few minutes then switch to 1 bar 3g, 5 bars 3g, then 2 bars edge a few more minutes after that. It also hits GPRS at times. With 3.0 installed on my old 3g, I didn't notice a lot of fluctuation, but wasn't looking for any either.

I am going to hold off on swapping my 3G S until the first update shows up. Hopefully it corrects these issues, especially since it seems to be a somewhat common issue. No change? Swap the phone.

Wow -- After reading your post this is my same exact problem !!

I have been ALL day with :apple: Apple regarding this issue ---

I have done everything you can do in regards to my router a linksys wrt150N and my new White 32G Iphone 3GS...reprogrammed the router, new security password, and reset the Iphone 3x times..

 I am truly FED UP with :apple: Apple  - I feel like returning the phone and buying something else.... I made a 3hr line to buy the phone on Friday, left the store yesterday after they told me (in a take or leave it attitude) that I had to wait in line for 2 1/2 hrs to buy a case for my Iphone (there was only one line to enter the store) and spent Father's day Sunday dealing with this P A I N on the phone !!!![/COLOR]

I was really Happy with the Iphone 3G - now I am kicking myself for selling it and buying this one!!!

UPDATE ____UPDATE ----

Went to the Apple store and the phone was exchanged -- the problem was definetely the phone.

Got home and activated it using a new restore ansd the transferred the apps pics and contacts --- SO FAR SO GOOD !!!
WILL KEEP YOU ALL POSTED !!!

I'm tired of dealing with it myself, I know its the phone/os.

I've tried 3 routers and swapped the phone out at the apple store.

Same situation with all combos. Wasted a good cumualtive 12+ hours of my weekend on this, it's broke , "I" cant fix it.

It seems it a fairly widespread problem so hopefully it get fixed in an patch soon.

I have an issue with distance. If I'm close to the router I'm fine, but after some distance the 3G did a lot better in keeping with the signal, this one seems to die faster and nearer.

I'm having wifi issues with both my 3GS and the Touch I upgraded to 3.0, which is frustrating because I gave the Touch to my husband after getting him all excited about what he can do online with it--and half the time he can't do *anything* online with it! It had worked great before the upgrade.

Update, since changing the router to b/g only and band to 4 (and subsequently rebooting the router) the connection 'seems' more stable, I haven't yet spent any great length of time using it at home and since its charging (thus keeping wifi active even if asleep) I cant say if it's fixed but it hasn't dropped once since I've been home and it seems to join the network quicker (by the time the pin pad appears after swiping)

will keep you updated but strongly suggest trying the b/g option as a test, still not ideal i guess if it works I'm 'lucky' that my slower broadband doesn't necessitate n plus PS3, my sister's win laptop and iphone use G and slow the network anyway

I am having some intermittent wifi issues. When I tune in KCRW or watching videos on YouTube, music/video will play only a few seconds and then it stops, showing timeout error or sometimes app crashes. Once I turn wifi off, using 3G only, they will play smoothly. Since it's my first iPhone, I thought it might be my wireless router that's causing the problem. I've tried to tweak my router see if it helps, but nothing I did could fix it. Distance is not the problem here, since I live in a small studio apartment, my iMac and laptop in my office both get great signal quality and strength. I also experience the same issue on my university campus-wide wireless network. :(

I think it's a 3.0 issue. I've noticed that on my iPhone3G the wifi signal is significantly lower. It even switches to 3G in parts of my house...and my house isn't that big! Never had this problem on 2.0.

I have similar issues on my 16GB 3G since updating to OS 3.0. I've used the phone almost a year without wifi problems, but with 3.0 it does not connect to the wlan automatically any more (tried it on 3 different wifi networks), which really is a pain.
A friend (also 3G and OS 3.0) has the same problems - phone does not (re-)connect to known WLAN hotspots automatically when coming out of sleep.

router: Linksys WRT54G
connection: Bellsouth FastAccess 3.0

wifi speedtest from wifi laptop: 2800 down
wifi speedtest from new iPhone 3GS: 600 down
wifi speedtest from wife's iPhone 3G still running 2.0: 1900 down

My wifi speed from my 3GS is slower than using the 3G connection. This should not be the case. Gonna update my wife's 3G to the 3.0 firmware tomorrow and then test hers. If it drops down to around 600 consistently, I'll feel confident that it's a software issue. If not, I guess I'm headed to the Apple store for a replacement.

Diagnosed and resolved this problem for my network. No Apple visit necessary!!!

I have an Airport Extreme and was getting consistent and annoying dropouts.

The unit had a fixed channel setting sometime ago to deal with a neighbors broken router.

I changed that back to automatic and rebooted.

It picked a new channel (compared to the one it was locked to) and now it's working very reliably and quite quickly.

I pressed the sleep button at 00:31 to end this connection but otherwise it is now constant until it sleeps itself.

For those wanting to check this on their airport my log level is set to informational (6). Logging is under "Advanced" - that gear wheel.

In Airport Summary the channel is shown and when running in Automatic mode this will be in parenthesis (round brackets like these) after the channel.

The setting can be changed under the wireless tab for the airport.

I suspect that either the security enhancements or frequency agility changes are causing some grief (how it's tied to your specific I iphone I don't know).

Hope this helps other.

We just got our 32GB 3GSs and an Airport Extreme as ATT coverage here blows chunks. LOL. I sit out in the backyard about 75 feet from the Extreme and can easily watche YouTube, surf the web and make calls and send msgs....

Now if I could just get Comcast and Optimum cable providers to fix whatever incompatibilities they have with the 3GS I would be happy. I tried emailing a photo I shot of a friend's daughter (I baked her a very fancy carrot cake) and my phone tries about 5 times (maybe it is 10) before giving up... Originally I had my mail setup to use my Optimum email address and had to ask for help from the local Genius Bar today to find out I'm better off making my default email addie a YAHOO one... Works fine with that, Optimum a giant NO !!!!

I love this thing.

I have a 16GB 3G and a couple days after installing 3.0 I started having weak wifi signals and dropping connection....NOW I CAN'T EVEN CONNECT AT ALL!! My iPhone doesn't see the network, and my network doesn't see the iPhone!

WTF!

Same issue here with my Rogers 16gb white 3Gs. I called them up, they're sending me a replacement one... ill report whether its the phone or the FW when i get the replacement and compare the two. my Black 3g is fine..

A Quick fix i found was to reset the router,, it seems to work for the day, then the problem reoccurs the next day. I had a similar issue with my MBP, was fixed after the Airport Extreme update.

P.S. Using a D-Link router just in case you were wondering.

Still no luck, can't be just a 3Gs problem as it is affecting me. My network doesn't see the phone and my phone doesn't see the network. I went to my friends houses and I couldn't connect to their networks either. Is it the phone or 3.0? I think I'll make a Genius appoitment this week. Anyone else get any info?

here is my update...

I went into my router settings. I have a linksys. I put the channel to auto select.. For teh past few days I have had no drop offs and I have had good speed as well as range. IDK if its a fluke or a fix. Just sharing.

2G having wifi issue after 3.0 update

At home, it keeps saying I have an "incorrect password" for my Lynksys. Any suggestions?

Have you tried to change the wireless setting to no security at all temporarily? Does it work that way? Check again see if the password you entered is correct though, it's easy to type the wrong character on iPhone, at least I do that a lot.

I had the same issue here. It only seems to do it when I'm close to my router. Turning off encryption works temporarily, but I'm having all kinds of issues and I haven't found a foolproof method for fixing it.

Same crazy problem!!

So @ work, my wifi FLIES!!!! I get home And it doesn't do much of anything. It (white iPhone 16g 3gs) connects to my wifi, but I can't even load a vid on YouTube. It's wierd, my 2g and laptop both connect to the same wifi signal in my apt and they both work fine. This has been driving me nuts!! I've reset my router, updated the firmware, changed some settings around and nothing still!!!! Any advice from anyone would be highly appreciated... Thanks

I had the same problem with my 8GB 3G, but my wifi was greyed out, meaning i couldnt even click on it. So I took it to apple and they replaced my phone with no hesitation and so far wifi and battery have been good (4days now). *knocking on wood*

Guys, I just disable Frame Bursting on my wireless router, and all the streaming music/videos problems are gone. Internet is fast on wifi now. It probably won't help if you couldn't even get your iPhone connects to the router. However, if your iPhone disconnects intermittently or just doesn't play internet radio or videos smoothly, then try it. It might help.
