Another reason why CDMA/Verizion is better than GSM/AT&T for this single purpose. Once phone is reported as lost or stolen it is unable to be re-registered to the network and becomes bricked.

That would happen with GSM phones too, if IMEI blacklists were used here.

Duuude, I was thinking the exact same thing.

1. Steve is eccentric
2. Apple is in a position financially, to be able to abandon this iPhone just to teach the public a lesson.

LOL! Why should the public be punished for his ****up? Its not our fault!

Apple should see the positives for this. I WANT THIS PHONE! If they pull it and unleash a featurless 3Gs+ phone then no moolah for Apple. They should chill out! Look at the frenzy its causing! I think most people love it! This is gonna be the fastest selling iPhone ever. Guaranteed!!!!!!!

C'mon. Apple is the king of controlled leaks.

Who needs a press release or a conference when viral is the best method of attack? With the iPad just released, the iPhone OS 4 just announced, leave it to the media to suck this news up and send it to the masses... for free.

Here's hoping that this next iPhone is a "World iPhone." Hell, and make it pentaband GSM/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA (read: include T-Mobile USA's 3G frequency!) Leave no one out.

Am I the only one who finds it very dodgy that Apple or an engineer lucky enough to have access to the next gen iPhone would be stupid enough to lose this in a bar. All seems a little too coincidental in my opinion. We all know how secretive Apple are about upcoming products, take the iPad, and whilst we DID eventually get some leaks, the photos were still taken of the device under lock and key, not out in the wild. It seems to me as if Apple leaked this device on purpose and wanted us to find it so everybody on the rumour sites had an absolute field day. I believe the device is a legit Apple unit, but to throw us off from the real thing. The design really feels like a step backwards from the 3GS, and whilst the Aluminium border makes it feel more complete with the whole Apple product line, it doesn't feel like the work of J. Ive one bit, especially those circular buttons (which do not fit at all with the very angular and boxy feel of the rest of the model?!). I was expecting to see a great change in the iPhone to make it more similar to the MacBook's and iPad, but for one, was hoping for a unibody rear casing similar to the iPad 3G, with the same sort of tapered edges. This website has a mockup of such a device, which I personally feel looks far more Apple-like and aesthetically appealing.

After watching the vid and looking through the gallery, the phone does seem to look better with better photography, but I still don't think it has the wow factor that I was expecting. Oh, well, I'll still get it because it's about time to upgrade.

I'm very interested in how Apple Legal reacts to this ... also, I hope someone tweets a picture of Steve Jobs venting out his anger on some poor Starbucks barista in Palo Alto ... ;)

I don't believe this "bar" story for a second. This has to be Apple wanting to get the info out there earlier than normal to counter the gaining momentum of their competitors, who are putting out new phones on a very regular basis.

I have to say this update seems like a small one. I feel almost no pull to upgrade from my 3GS.

Why not believe the bar story? One of the battle plan for Robert E. Lee's invasion of the north, a general used to wrap three cigars only to lose and be found by a union soldier during the American Civil War that resulted in Union General George McClellan staying off Lee's plans with the battle at Antietam.

And Apple seems pretty set at a one year product announcement for their product refreshes so I doubt Apple is concerned at the plethora of phones from competitors. In fact, I'd be leery, being a manufacturer on the other side. All the hoopla for your HTC Incredible for sprint has it's steam taken out by the announcement of Samsung this for T-Mobile or the Motorola that for Verizon all within weeks or months apart. Not much time as King of the Hill whereas, Apple is selling to those who have witnessed the Apple experience either through a MacBookPro or iMac using OS X, an iPod and are hooked with their products, eco-system etc and know and accept the one year or so refresh. Just my .02.

Besides, why shouldn't the iPhone be taken off campus. How is it goiing to be tested in various bar scene episodes?! :D

Stranger things have happened.

Regarding lost iPhone, so much for MobileMe finding it! ;)

Yeah if all is true, Steve will be

Regarding design, It a candy bar design... rocker switches one day, buttons the next, a slight curve one day, a rectangular box the next, seamless body one day, screws and "cuts" the next, one material for front and back one day, another material the next... outside of all that, what changes can be made to a candy bar designed phone?

Why are you guys whining? This phone looks friggin awesome, Look at the video of the asian guy that's holding the new phone on Gizmodo + the gallery of the phone here:

http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone

It seems like Apple really adressed all the stupid issues the old phones had, Buttons look really sturdy now and the whole frame around it looks like aluminium, new camera, flash, front facing camera, high-res display flat flush backside.. No more wobbly iPhone when you're trying to text with it laying flat on a table... less curve edges, It looks smooth and professional in my opinion. This new phone looks slightly smaller and thinner overall So I'm guessing it'll be really comfortable to hold in your hand also it will be easier for manufacturers out there to make good cases and car/bike mounts for it since it's so simple design wise.

Personally I'm digging it, it seems like apple really listened to the users out there this time and I'm ready to fork over money for this device.. The only thing I don't like is the cuts on the edge by the headphone jack, no idea what's that for or if it's useful but it's not THAT big of a deal.

wow, thanks for the link. looking at it in the video, i'm liking it more and more. i can't even believe this "leak".

Was just going to post this. It looks like this is real. The picture of it in the plastic 3gs case make it look exactly like the phone that was on top of the iPad. Without the case, it looks exactly like the phone that was next to the iPad.

Thinking about it you're right. It sits flush on top.

It seems that Gruber is right. Gizmodo is Engadget's sister site (along with TUAW) and Gizmodo had the more extensive post while Engadget got first dibs on the story.

Let see how everybody that said that if this is the real deal they are not getting this "Hideous" "Non-Apple design" phone!!

I'm wondering if this is just a hardware prototype and the actual case will be different? The "removable battery and complete change from rounded edges seem very un-Apple-like.

bet Giz isnt getting invited to the unveiling :)

they took a risk, but i think its worth it

Have you seen the pic of it in its camoflauge case on Gizmodo?

I think that shows that its the exact phone that was sat on top of the iPad in the leaked iPad photo (as well as the one you can just see far right)

The design looks a lot better in the high res photos. I'm starting to really like it a lot!

I'm sure it feels amazing in your hands.

i don't really get the argument why some ppl call it an "unusual" apple design. have u seen the latest apple computers? it fits perfectly next to them

the back reminds me of the first gen iPod Nano

True. But I think the unusual part has to do with the seams. Having the glass extend all the way to the edge is very apple-like though and goes well with the rest of their designs, like the latest iMac.
