Apparent Next-Generation iPhone Gets a Thorough Hands-On

I wasn't too fond of the new design, but these updated pictures have grown on me. If this is real, I still hope those seems are eliminated for the final design. That's the biggest flaw to the design in my opinion. If that aluminum trim was solid, it would look quite nice. I really like the look of the ceramic back end, and the way the front and back panels cover the trim.

Looks great! I will have one :)

Front camera, better rear camera with flash, bigger battery. I like the shape. Which, for ceramics on the rear makes sense. Smooth flat back is easier to manufacture. Plus it gives more interior volume for same width/height.

Someone is in serious trouble for this though. Totally stealing Apple's prelaunch hype/anticipation marketing angle. That is clearly the real-deal. To well documented to be a blurry fake we traditionally see. It also will allow a preemptive strike by Android/Google, knowing the coming product. Heads are certainly rolling at headquarters for this goof. Google will hire the guilty party though and steal some more ideas.

Wait...

So the report suggests that the owner of this 'device' just happened to leave it in a bar? Oh please.

[A] Why would you take the successor of a multi-million selling product to a bar?

Why would you take the prototype successor of a multi-million selling product to a bar?

[C] How could anyone just leave such an important device in a bar?

[D] Do you think Apple staff just galavant out with prototype products?

Its complete twoddle. A fake just obviously just 'left' there in the knowledge that it would spread fast on the net. The same reason S.Jobs only replies to random emails with a couple of sentences - one message and millions will have read it.

Devices do have to get field tested from time to time, however when thy do, employees are told to be very careful with them. I doubt the bar story simply because it just sounds a bit odd - why would an employee take a prototype device into a bar and risk it being seen publicly especially when reviews for the iPad couldn't do that and that was after knowing what it looked like?

I like it, but it may be either a modded iphone or a prototype 4G iphone, we'll find out in the months ahead.

I hope to God that isn't it. The screen size is exactly the same as all the previous generations. Why on earth include such a high res screen in a tiny size...

I think it's just a test bed case - i.e. a functional shell that has very little to do with what the next iteration of the iPhone will look like but that allows for an assembly of a set of internal components for testing as a unit.
I don't think so. Engadget's pictures of the lost/stolen iPhone 4G retroactively legitimized some older pictures from China where you could see it stripped down to the metal chassis. This is not some crap container to put test components in, this is clearly an intricate design tailor made to house these specific parts.

just a guess here but 16% longer?!

The battery is bigger. I'm guessing that's just to keep the battery life at similar levels to previous generations given the expected upgraded tech specs. Faster processor, new screen = potential for higher power consumption.

Of course there is a possibilty that the A4 chip is more efficient than the previous 600mhz model, I highly doubt it consumes less power.

i think thats a controlled leak.

found in a bar, almost no info on memory, display-resolution, processor.. smells a bit fishy imho. the published info should keep us interested till release (probably too many people buying android-devices lately)..

just my thoughts...

The only reason i think this iPhone could just be a prototype/dummy shell (with the real hardware inside) for software teams to work on the OS is because the iPad picture. If you look, the iPad is heavily camouflaged and the actual design is hidden for users around the test bed (at that point, they would be testing software on the production units). In that same picture you see this new iPhone on the table for everyone to see. This is similar to the reports we had heard about the original iPhone during it's design phase. Software teams worked on dummy hardware, hardware teams worked with dummy software.

But the evidence in the Gizmodo article strongly suggest this "prototype" being very close to the final design.
