All I'm thinking is that if Apple didn't want this story out, it wouldn't still be sitting front and center on Giz going into hour 5.

Plus, the people are Giz aren't stupid. I'm sure they would realize the potential ramifications of stealing an iPhone prototype to get pageviews.

Obviously Apple is not about deliberate leaks, but maybe they're trying something new this year. I really don't know. But I find the story, as presented, a little hard to believe.

Turn on your iPhone and try to count the pixels. Now imagine if the pixels were much smaller.

i don't have an iphone. but i think it shouldn't be that hard to count the pixels if you photograph the screen with a macro cam..

I call bs---no chance this is the next iphone....sorry guys, but this doesnt seem to have that apple fit and finish. Im not saying the internals arent new, but the case doesnt fit any other design trend within the company...

machined aluminum frame, edge to edge glass screen... wait, that sounds like the iPad, MBP and iMac redesign...

are you serious? Doesn't fit with any other trend? Have you seen the imacs/macbooks/etc... Besides a seam or two it looks like it fits exactly in.

Anybody else find it interesting that this is the last story Gizmodo has posted today? When was the last time that Gizmodo went 2 hours without posting a new article on a weekday?

Most likely, all the Gizmodo editors have gone dark for a while, so they can dodge service of the cease&desist notices while raking in the ad impressions.

why isn't it disassembled like any other new products to really see if it's really Apple made?

Looks like I might be half right! :D

A Chinese engineer committed suicide after he was allegedly roughed-up by company security services when one of the iPhone 4G prototypes entrusted into his care went missing.

Twenty-five-year-old Sun Danyong, a recent engineering graduate, was employed by Foxconn, manufacturer of Apple's iPhone and iPods. According to reports from China Radio International (Google translation), VentureBeat, and others, Sun leapt to his death from the 12th floor of his apartment building on July 16th, a few days after the iPhone 4G prototype disappeared.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Looks attractive to me. However, I wouldn't care if it was puke green with sparkles. If it is legit and has that feature set, coupled with OS 4 it's an absolute dream phone. I will buy it in an INSTANT!!!

Black and aluminium doesn't fit the design trend? If anything I think Gizmodo got it right when they said put it next to an iMac or a MBP and see. If anything the current iPhone with its fat rounded back and chrome bezel doesn't fit their current design trend.

Of course everyone was expecting a unibody enclosure like the iPad 3G, but I reckon it's a smart choice to try and differentiate those products, after all Apple doesn't want to fan the flames of 'it's just a big iPhone/iPod Touch.'

A couple of thoughts: perhaps Apple contacted Giz and said that they would sue the **** out of them if they posted photos of the innards.

or...

Giz will post them later this week.

I'm glad I bought the 3GS, I prefer that form factor - however, I reserve my right to change my mind once June/July rolls around. ;)

As I'm writing this post, Steve Jobs is taking a **** on some prototype engineer's face, and then firing him. Not a good day to be the person in charge of that phone...

I love how many people are talking about how ugly the phone is when 99% of you are going to slap a case on it anyways and have only the screen showing.

****!

Have you even read the Gizmodo article? They found a tonne of Apple branded parts inside the phone!

I mean really disassemble it and post pictures like they always do. To find out what CPU, GPU, RAM is using :). And also i'd like to see that "connect to itunes" screen :)

Does anyone live in Japan or China? Maybe that's really some kind of bulls--t phone they are making. I bet there is a lot of ripoffs/imitation-phones out there. That design is certainly a stepback.

I'm hopeful the exterior of this "device" isn't what the new iPhone will look like, but is instead a fake casing (as many have alluded to). This would be similar to a car maker covering a new model with black trash bags during test drives to throw off inevitable gawkers.

It would account for the authentic materials Gizmodo uncovered when they took it apart, in that it is in fact an actual, working model, and from the looks of the listed features would be great news for those concerned with its specs.

From the looks of the phone, I just can't imagine that this is the new design. The visible screws, located on the bottom of the phone next to the speakers, particularly bother me (see this picture: http://cache-04.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/4/2010/04/iphone8.jpg). It just doesn't seem consistent with the flush, unibody feel the iPhone currently has.

Only June will tell.

The battery is bigger. I'm guessing that's just to keep the battery life at similar levels to previous generations given the expected upgraded tech specs. Faster processor, new screen = potential for higher power consumption.

Of course there is a possibilty that the A4 chip is more efficient than the previous 600mhz model, I highly doubt it consumes less power.

The whole point of the Apple chips is power reduction.
The combination of a larger battery with a more efficient processor is likely to produce more endurance.

C.

Might have something to do with the fact that it has gotten over 1.5 million views. They had to shut down the commenting system to keep the servers from being overloaded. They're probably making a killing on ad views.
