This is bad, because it's proof that Apple simply can't improve Siri without acquisitions.
Couldn’t be more wrong.
How did Face ID came to life? By acquisition of different companies.
It is the Apple way.

Reminds me of when they acquired Siri when it was an app (which most people either don’t know, or forgot), well, except that Shazam is much more popular. I’m sure they’re integrating it into iOS somehow.
It’s already integrated in Siri. Which most people either don’t know, or forgot.

Who is using shazam still?? it was a neat bar trick to show off to non-techy friends... but that's it. I deleted this off my phone years ago... such a rarely needed application.
You can’t delete Siri.
1,2,3...

Oh boy. It's going to get integrated with Siri, which I don't use or it might end up a subscription service.
It’s been already integrated into Siri for a few years.
Living under a rock lately?

I got a free Starbucks download code a number of years back for SoundHound Unlimited, and I haven't looked back at Shazam since. I like the way SoundHound does things. Siri integration isn't useful for me since I already have more than 900 tags on SoundHound that are all tagged with time and date and location.

I guess we'll see how this plays out for Apple.

About time.

They should by Yelp too. They already missed out on Waze. Could have got in on Snapchat.

Don't know who's in charge of acquisitions at Apple, but they are slow rolling on apps that be very useful to iOS users with better integration.

I disagree. Yelp is rather hated because you basically have to bribe them to "curate" reviews of your business, and then if you pull a stunt like asking for poor reviews (google them with the pizza place that tried it) they try to SUE you for not playing the game. Also, Snapchat is getting their rear ends handed to them by Facebook, so in the long term there is little upside to buying them before there's a fire sale.

Waze, however, would have been very good to acquire, as well as LoopPay.

You buy when you have poor product vision
And start meddling in everything, like google, and this is what Apple is doing .... so sorry I see the point your were making , though those stats actually go against Apple under Cook .....

No. Shazam’s technology/IP is well understood. And locked up with patents. It has nothing to do with product vision.

You buy in those situations, especially when you are cash-rich, and the other company has unique expertise.

Nothing new or anti-innovation about that. Silicon Valley has been doing that for decades. That’s why the last 11 person startup I was in was acquired by a 40,000 employee company, who could have rolled their own. But that would have been incredibly stupid. That’s how it works here.

Perhaps they could roll some of the tech into Siri so that she could, i dunno, understand at least some of the ****ing words I say to her.

Fabulous - I will switch to SoundHound now completely. Not a fan of how they handled Siri once they owned it and the stagnation that occurred there.

MAY acquire. And yet we're already seeing people take the initial report and change it to say they ARE acquiring them. It's not certain at this point.
Apple Acquires Shazam and Says 'Exciting Plans' Are Ahead

I do not see the word "may."

Great :/, bye Shazam. Hello iMusic Tunecatcher: Apple Music Subscription Required or some other variation

Hope the app will become completely free with no In - App Purchase to remove the ads. like what happened with workflow.

This will hurt Spotify if they lose Shazam integration while giving Apple valuable IP and people resources to make Siri and Apple Music better. Good move for Apple.

This will not hurt Spotify. I'm not going to stop using Spotify, nor am I going to stop using Shazam. It's just going to be a little more annoying for me each time I do, but convince me to switch to Apple Music? No chance.

Huh?....Siri and Google Assistant were both built FROM integrations. That's the way its done in the tech world. Why build when you can easily buy an asset.

Good bye Spotify integration... :(

If they remove Spotify integration, I'm immediately deleting Shazam and doubling down on my commitment to use only platform agnostic services. Unfortunately I can totally foresee this happening - because very obviously Apple becomes more and more the talking man on the blue screen in front of a sitting army of indoctrinated followers. :(

It might hurt Spotify, but 100% agree with the rest you said. Personally any such nasty anti-competitive move from Apple will just cement my resolve not to use Apple Music, EVER.

Just use Soundhound. In my tests, it works better anyways.

Preemptively will have to give it a try!

let me guess, integrate into Siri so they get better answers for the search requests... Exciting plans my arse!

What would be exciting is if we could take a picture and get siri to identify the object, except the object database would be small, and google now would make a better one for andriod within 6 months.

Tim Cook for retirement? let's hope!

I can't believe Apple is paying something like $1B for Shazam, while they paid $400M for Next (foundation of OS X / macOS / iOS / tvOS / watchOS) and got Steve Jobs thrown in as a bonus.

So will Shazam no longer be available for Android? If so, back to Soundhound.

I personally don't care because so many options out there and I only use Shazam for Android. Siri recognizes songs. That's the only thing that Siri does for me as Google Assistant is smarter.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this but Google Assistant recognizes songs based on Play Music I believe. So that feature will still be available for Android.
