i feel a recall coming on this cant be software related, fix is no good, the signal bars just look ugly now!

Does anyone know if 4.0.1 fixed the problem that 4.0 made the iPhone 3G unusable due to horrid slowness of absolutely everything? Because I really don't like how the iOS 4.0 software update made the iPhone 3G worthless, forcing owners to upgrade (or revert), but then all these shennanigans over the iPhone 4 makes it very hard to actually buy the new phone. I imagine it'll be even longer now before white iPhone 4s are released if the black ones are going on extended backorder.

So who is still daft enough to believe there's going to be a recall when they've released a software update the day before the Press Conference?

Anyone?

Uh... considering the software update does NOTHING to fix the actual hardware issue, Id say there is still a good chance that they will announce some sort of hardware fix or voluntary/partial recall or a send & fix warranty work.

can anyone comment on this?

iOS 4.1 beta includes Bluetooth AVRCP. I assume the 4.0.1 doesn't but it would be nice if it did.

Otherwise known as passing the buck. The phone has antenna issues....but blaming DG issue on the AT&T network makes for a convenient scapegoat.

'Hey, our hardware is fine....it just doesn't run on AT&T's network....'

lol yes.. but i meant they show your bars more accurately now and everyone has said their bars have dropped for 5 to 3 or something similar. so if you set the iphone down and let it get as many bars as it can then that shows how well att is actually doing, which i am curious about because i would think i live in a great signal area.

I can safely say it's done bugger all for my reception problem except now it's showing 2 bars instead of 4. I still lose internet connection when i pick it up
That's essentially what this update was supposed to do. Let it be clear that this is no magical "happymaker" update, it's a "setting the record straight" update. From the minute it was announced, people had a hunch it would only make everyone more ticked off than before since they would lose bars while the reception issue itself would remain unchanged.

I dread to install it on my old 3G... I'll miss the 5 bars that are always up there 24/7, even if I know they're a lie. ;)

I'm getting ERROR CODE 9 when trying to do this... tried it 3 times now, including direct download. Effing sweet, no phone now.

The new bars look "really stupid." Mostly, you'll be reminded how bad AT&T is when you are looking at one tall bar. They should have just reversed it, and put the largest bar first. Then you could have said that the largest bar offers the largest amount of noise, the smaller the bars, the better (which we'll mostly never see again).

before and after

Before: 5 bars in house
After: 1 to 2 bars in my house

How did this help me? Why does Apple think they can fool use with this useless update?

iPhone 3GS

PS: I can now make the signal drop from 2 bars to 1 with the "death grip"

Does anyone remember awhile back when Apple updated the bars to show a stronger signal? I do....

iPhoneSignal_both.jpg

new way of showing bars based on signal strength

so basically they were manipulating the bars like crazy last time.. i wonder if any other phone companies do this

Ok, Im a Iphone newb, Can I plug into ITunes at work and update or do I have to wait til I get home and use my home PC where I sync?

thanks!

No offense but Apple have done squiddly doo. My BlackBerry gets 5 solid bars that rarely blink whilst my newly updated iPhone which calculates signal more 'accurately' only dances between 3 and 4. This drops down to 2/1 once i grab/touch the phone. With the previous method. 5 bars which dropped to 4/3 upon groping.

This comparison tells us nothing of value. How do you know what they use to calculate bars displayed on the Blackberry?

Just installed the iPhone update on my 3GS, my bars are now LESS than before i installed it!!! WTF apple????

Software update here. Problem not fixed. What don't you understand you moron?

Given what Apple said about the update (we were showing too much signal when in low-signal conditions, we're going to show less bars), what did you expect it to do?

On O2 here in the UK, my iPhone 4 with 4.0.1 now displays the signal more accurately (i.e correctly displays that the signal in my flat is *****), and when holding in the death grip, goes to 'No service' as it did with 4.0. This wasn't a problem with my old 3G, nor is it a problem for other handsets used in the same spot.

Interestingly, I'm on O2 in the UK, and have had no problems with signal at all, no dropped calls, though even on the old 4.0 it is constantly around 1-2 bars inside the house except at windows. I can't even reproduce a drop when gripping the phone, but can see the signal vary if I move around inside a building, as you'd expect. Doesn't matter if I touch the phone though. Seems to be quite a difficult problem to reproduce - some people have it all the time, some people haven't seen it.

My Iphone 3G is still slow, come one Apple get your game up

My 3G is unusably slow... Unfortunately my region still has not start selling the iPhone 4...:(

My 3G as well. It just can't handle iOS4. Even though it's still a little slow, what helped a lot was resetting all settings. It's faster and less choppy than when I first downloaded. I'm waiting awhile before I update again.

well, the new update has caused my phone to exhibit the dropping bars when I didn't have an issue before.

My bars drop real fast now, and always stop at 1 bar. Granted, my signal is not great here, so it's not unexpected to have 1 or 2 bars, but from 4 to 1 bar in less than 5 seconds is scary....

I haven't tested to see if calls drop or not, so it may just be a visual thing in the bar meter....

Very little difference on my 3G. Never got very good reception here in the office anyway, but now at least my 1 bar is taller.

I can't say about 4.0.1, but I've heard that 4.1 beta dramatically improves performance on the 3G.

well look at the picture of how they did it. they gave the 5 bar way too big of a range.. and look at the 3 bar, wat a joke.

I thought that they were going to update the Modem firmware from 01.59.00 to 02.07.01, but mine didn't update.

Did I miss something?

EDIT - that was 4.1 not 4.0.1

So this update basically cosmetic update. Not an actual fix update. Bar you see now are more accurate and thats it?
