I'm not even bothering with the upgrade. It's all an optical illusion. WTF Apple?!

You can still get your 4.0.0 SHSH blob! However you MUST HURRY! The window for that is closing and we have no guarantee how long it'll stay open. GET your SHSH blob NOW!

Stupid question, but what is a SHSH blob? I've seen several post mention it and a google search was no help.

Just installed 4.01 onto my iphone 4.

Before the update I got 4 bars at home reducing to zero in 15 seconds if I hold the bottom left hand side of the phone.

After the update I get 4 bars at home reducing to zero in 15 seconds if I hold the bottom left hand side of the phone.

Go figure.

Oh….The bars are bigger. Whoopie do.

No offense but Apple have done squiddly doo. My BlackBerry gets 5 solid bars that rarely blink whilst my newly updated iPhone which calculates signal more 'accurately' only dances between 3 and 4. This drops down to 2/1 once i grab/touch the phone. With the previous method. 5 bars which dropped to 4/3 upon groping.

After reading 7 pages, the sheer stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me.

No, it will not make your 3G run better. It's old hardware that shouldn't even be supported anyways. To expect it to run a new OS well is just naive, no, just stupid.

Also, no, you did not lose signal, no, it did not make your connection worse; IT FIXED THE SIGNAL REPORTING. I don't know how this is hard to get; it now accurately reports the bars you have, unlike before, where it lied to you.

But alas, no one from the iPhone forum reads anyways, so this will fall on deaf ears (or rather blind eyes).

Mr. Darkplanets whilst I understand your rage :D As many people do seem to post without thinking/reading fully (I thought mac users were more technically adept or something similar?)

...may I point out that is no longer absurd to expect a new OS to run faster on the same hardware. As we step into the new decade programmers are trying to become more efficient, hence you have Windows 7 screaming way more than Vista did on my machine or, for e.g. Snow Leopard supposed to have X% faster boot/wake times than leopard, smaller footprint etc. So its not that unreasonable to expect ;)

It doesn't matter when your wife bought her 3G, her purchase date only affects the age of the device to her, not the market.

The iPhone 3G is old hardware, it launched in 2008, and is basically the exact same specification as the original iPhone but with a GPS sensor built in and the obvious 3G networking.

If they're still selling it then they're obligated to support it no ifs ands or buts about it.

I got $10 that says they just modified the code to just show people what they want. Program it to show 5 bars so that when a call drops we can go back to blaming AT&T. Nice try.

We know it shows less bars than before, which is not what some people wanted. What do I need to do for my $10 or was that a lie like we're hearing here about the fact that there is no antenna issue? I'll be willing to give you back your $10 if you come back and admit you were wrong...:D

Folks, do try and keep up.

What was promised in this update is exactly what was delivered. Bars.

Not prox sensor fixes, not antenna reception issues...bars.

And if you've had previous iPhones and updates, you know the files are always huge, completely replacing/updating the software/firmware.

Sheesh.

The readme actually said it contains bug fixes including the bar thingie. While it's true it may only contain that fix, the statement when you download and install the update implies it could contain other things. How many times have we installed updates to our iThingies and it fixes/enhances things that aren't in the readme?

Stupid question, but what is a SHSH blob? I've seen several post mention it and a google search was no help.

It is basically a code or signature that iTunes requires to Restore an iPhone to the OS desired. The signature is generated at Apple's servers each time your restore/update an iPhone.

In this case a 4.0.0 SHSH blob will allow you to come back to 4.0.0 even though Apple has 4.0.1 out. In other words you can downgrade. This is good because come the jailbreak you never know if the newest Apple OS will be supported by those tools.

That's it in a nutshell.

I have a very simple question. Why is this update valid for iPhone 3GS and 3G?

The formula is wrong for the iPhone 4 but why do they need to correct it for 3G and 3GS?

Do they want more bars in 3G/3GS so that people see no difference?

This Really Looks Like Apple's Vista

Just updated to 4.0.1 and the Grip-O-Death (or Stray-Finger) still causes signal loss. Should have known better doing the update when it's purely a hardware design flaw.

No change...the antenna issue remains. Less bars than before too. Nice try Apple...Now what?

Can you make it go to seaching for signal? Just because the bars go down doesn't mean much. Also, do you have dropped calls. With 4.1 I can't make my phone go to zero bars.

That thread is almost 2 days old now. However, people who would like to jailbreak usually keep up with Twitter accounts related to the iPhone Dev Team, like Planetbeing's twit about making your SHSH blob back-up. You'd also be aware there is an unlock for the iPhone 4 already, albeit not released yet.

I even went back and looked, and still can't find any thread about this created before this morning. I did know there was an Unlock, there's been plenty of news on that.

In any case, you're right, I don't follow anyone on twitter. Hopefully the window will still be open when I get off work.

WTF??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I have less bars and my data is at a crawl! Why did I update? I should have known better.

GODDAMMMIT!!

:mad::mad::mad::mad::confused::confused::mad::mad::mad::apple::apple::apple::(:(

iPhone 3Gs user here living in Sweden. It seemed to have lost one bar indoors. Haven't tried it outdoors yet.

Also, it still drops down to one bar when I'm holding it in my hand. Very annoying.

People really need to keep up with the news sometimes. The update wasn't for the "antenna issue." It's to alter the way the signal bars are being shown.
