Last night at 11pm is 2 days ago, now? You make it sound like it's the worst thing in the world that I didn't hear about this before this morning, and the news first came up here last night at 11pm.

Yes, it's completely unreasonable that I first saw that thread, created at 11pm last night, when I got up this morning.

My 3G as well. It just can't handle iOS4. Even though it's still a little slow, what helped a lot was resetting all settings. It's faster and less choppy than when I first downloaded. I'm waiting awhile before I update again.
Nah...

My 3G was slow before the 4.0 upgrade, too.

Hoping the 4.1 upgrade, that just went beta, will fix some of that slowness, since I still don't know when the iPhone 4 will be released here in Norway. (I fear that Apple's "late July"-statement is a bit on the optimistic side.) This is just a quick pre-press conference fix... ;)

Didn't have any issues before the update with anything( this is a replacement ) and still don't after the update. Still full signal and no proximity issues. Maybe I'm just lucky

when did you get your iphone? i got mine on the 29th i believe and i have yet to have a proximity issue but i do have the antenna problem.

Prior to the update, bars went down from 5 to 2 upon grip of lower left.
After the update, bars go down from 3 to 2 upon grip of lower left.

i seriously cant repeat the death grip now the bars just wont drop at all!!!! the proximity sensor seems i little more sensative!!! but the screen green flash in sun light is still there annoying but i didnt think they would fix that in this update

Strangely enough....I just did this earlier today for 3.1.3 and 4.0 for my 3Gs running 3.1.2....Cydia showed the new shsh blobs saved. Cydia and Apple's servers are going to be overwhelmed for quite some time now.

Wow....so many threads here lately (and probably many to come) are reminding me of a song my 6 year old used to sing......'with an Apple Apple here, and a Apple Apple there.......e...i....e....i....o".

Before: 5 bars in house
After: 1 to 2 bars in my house

How did this help me? Why does Apple think they can fool use with this useless update?
That's not really what they're thinking since this is the update where they stop fooling everyone. Since 2.0.1 or thereabouts, the bars have been what we in Sweden refer to as a "glädjemätare" ('joy meter', slang for any kind of indicator that wildly exaggerates in order to impress, such as a speedometer that shows +10 mph more than the actual speed). Now they've changed it back to a meter that more accurately reflects (the sad) reality.

Not official yet, but in a quick test it does look like the proximity sensor is working better after the update. The screen actually turned on at the end of a call! :)

Glad I don't work at Apple...

I can't even imagine the s##t storm of angry internal memos, yelling and screaming meetings and all night "get it fixed" sessions. It's at times like this that I'm very happy to not work at Apple.

well look at the picture of how they did it. they gave the 5 bar way too big of a range.. and look at the 3 bar, wat a joke.

I think it's funny now I can really see the "1" bar much better. Thanks Apple for allowing me to see clearly how crappy your network really is!!! What a fricking joke.

I told my wife when the iphone came out 3 years ago that this would hurt all of their product lines.

iPhoneSignal_both.jpg

new way of showing bars based on signal strength

This explains why I could never get my phone to drop from 5 bars with the grip. Now I can make it drop down to 3 at most. At least it's accurate, no complaints there.

Remedial learning time....

This is not going to fix the reception issue. This was not intended to fix the reception issue.

Please people...do try to keep up.

Exactly. We've known this since July 2nd.

But of course that doesn't matter on the internet, this is going to snowball into something QUITE annoying by the end of the day. All because people can't read.

I got mine from AT&T whatever day that was they started selling it. 27th maybe?

Bama, was that the day you got your replacement, or did you replace the one you got that day?

(Im the guy that was 4 people behind you in line).

I usually got around 2-3 bars in my house before the update, and I have the same now. I was worried I would get no service, but luckily I don't.

You're kidding, right? All this update does is show how much service you truly have. Your phone had been lying to you, just because it showed 3 bars before doesn't mean you had 3 bars. IF you had service in your house, you will continue to have service in your house.

Joe,

Apple doesn't own/operate a cellular communications network. FYI.

I have a very simple question. Why is this update valid for iPhone 3GS and 3G?

The formula is wrong for the iPhone 4 but why do they need to correct it for 3G and 3GS?

Do they want more bars in 3G/3GS so that people see no difference?

In their open letter, Apple claimed that their signal strength formula has been wrong since the first iPhone. I used to get 5 bars on my 3G, but now with 4.0.1 installed, it hovers between 3 and 4 bars.

At home i got 2/3 bars before the update. im getting the same after the update.

I can still get the signal to drop to nothing and get 'searching' appear just the same as before the update. All i did was just place my left thumb over the black strip as before. Fix this isnt.
