so basically they were manipulating the bars like crazy last time.. i wonder if any other phone companies do this

Originally, the bars were not manipulated, but people complained about their friends phones having more "bars" than their iPhones so Apple artificially inflated the bars in 2.1 I believe it was. I'm glad we're back to properly reported bars now. Comparing bars to friends phones is just idiotic. Bars are not a form of measurment.

It is truly amazing at how many people have no clue as to what this release was supposed to do, and even after 16+ pages of discussion, still don't get it.

I am using iOS 4.1 beta all morning. Two observations:

1) the signal strength bars reflect accurately the signal I receive so my expectations of connectivity and speed are realistic to the signal. I know my signal strength in db because I have my 3GS on with available field test mode still running.

2) the proximity sensor issue is no longer. it appears that they have made some adjustments that keeps the screen dark for an additional half second or more to make sure the sensor acknowledges its location. From my experience the proximity sensor would act up especially when I was moving the phone around my ear, etc. Now if I move it around it does not light up the screen and more importantly when I take the phone away from my ear, it waits that short half second before lighting up.

Still more testing to do but my one observation from the beginning has been this iPhone does not drop calls. I have to be in a very difficult coverage area to lose the call. So, I am amazed at the vocal response of the blogger community. I am also a left handed talker so go figure.

Very useful update. Thank you!

It's widely known that just because something doesn't appear in release notes doesn't mean it's excluded from the update. To hear a potential success story regarding the Prox Sensor is very encouraging.

I think the left-handed thing is a bit of a misnomer. I'm Right-handed but almost universally will hold my phone(s) in my left hand so as to free my right hand/arm up to complete tasks, hold my kid, whatever.

Big deal!! So let me get this straight. First, Apple thought the bar formula was 2X+2= 4, which equal 4 bars and thus a full signal strength. But now Apple realize that 2x+2 doesnot equal 4 and decides to add 2 to 4 = 6 then divide by 2x, which equal 3. So the real signal strength is really 3, not 4. LOL

Big Deall!@!! It still doesn't remove the fact that if you put your finger on the antenna, the signal dies.

not on mine..

After applying the 3.2.1 iPad update, I now find that my iPad refuses to charge when connected to my Macbook Pro. Before the update, it would charge (albeit more slowly than when connected to the wall charger) from a USB port on my MBP. Now however, I simply get a message which replaces the battery indicator which says: "Not Charging."

Anyone else with an iPad experiencing the same thing after applying the 3.2.1 update?

i've always gotten that message when i plug it into my computer. But then again i'm not on a mac.
I know that a lot of iphone chargers would say the same thing because they don't have enough AMPS to charge the iPad.

so what does Apple have to offer tomorrow?

now that Apple has released the software update, it just made me wondering what left for Apple to offer tomorrow? more PR spin? or a high school electric education:D?

I don't see the large green battery charging (don't know if you ever did for iPad), but I see the battery charge icon in the top-right of the screen. So I guess it charges.

yes i agree it is ridiculous. what we should all be talking about is why are my signal bars not the same looking and why do i not get full bars in my house anymore?!?!?!?!! any suggestions? :D:D:D:D:D:D:D;););););););):apple::apple:

;)
Again, does anyone seriously expect a recall tomorrow with a software update released the day before the press conference?

exactly you hit the nail on the head with that one ! more like some one should hit apple for trying to pull a flanker until the share price took a doing .:D

New bars just look odd heh...

Non issue. Just avoid installing it that way.

Yeah thats happening here too : / I thought it was maybe cause I had both my iphone 4 and ipad into my macbook. I'll try the ipad itself and see what happens. Once i fix my wifi, which this update was supposed to, but instead totally took it down..

as for iphone 4.0.1. sucesss. nice and smooth update. still displaying 5 bars :) shall perform the almighty deathgrip and see.

will post bk here with ipad and iphone updates soon :)

Proximity Sensor

Did some more tests... where I could not hang up a call before because the screen was black... it seems to work now. I think they fixed it!!!! :D:D:D

Key word here is "I think"... not 100% sure yet but looks very promising!

Update went fast, about 12 minutes. I had 5 bars at my office prior to the update, still 5 bars after the update. All is good.
