It is truly amazing at how many people have no clue as to what this release was supposed to do, and even after 16+ pages of discussion, still don't get it.

+1
but I think that they are new users: if they had an iphone before the 4th they would have noticed that reception is now simply the same as before ios4.
So really nothing to worry about.

Ok, Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vodafone UK here... The signal has gotten worse! HOW THE FRAK is that possible!?!?!?

I am so pissed now!

They better recall or refund! this is a disaster!

yea the ONLY people who should EVER use the word "Frak" needs to be fighting Cylons, are you fighting Cylons?

On Topic note: I'm not updating.

So who is still daft enough to believe there's going to be a recall when they've released a software update the day before the Press Conference?

Anyone?

My money's on "discounted" bumper cases. $19.99 instead of $29.99. That'll be their peace offering for all this.

Thankfully this is a minor update, so it didn't wipe everything. When I upgraded my old 3GS to iOS 4, it took 2 hours to reinstall all my apps, music and photos.

Wow great timing. I was just about to call applecare to get a replacment ipad as my wifi support blows ass. Lets see if this fixes anything, not to mention im using a time capsule and have constant 1 bar while my iphone has full wifi connection. Giant crock of **** in my book.

FINALLY I thought this day would never come, my iPad has been annying me with Wi-Fi issues since april 3rd!!!!!!!

The REAL FIX HERE!

Guys.... forget the bars... it's just graphics... nothing else has changed on your reception... it still works as before.... tomorrow is the day for the Antenna fix... not today....

Anyway... THE REAL FIX HERE seems to be the PROXIMITY SENSOR! Mine is working MUCH better!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Day! Happy Day! :D:D:D

Signal drop for me

Naturally, I now have 3 bars where I work instead of 5 or 4 bars. But I can also cause a signal lose on my iPhone 3G by cupping my hand behind the phone as if I was making a call. It can drop from 3 down to 1 bar easily. See attached photos. So the fact that people can cause their iPhone 4 to drop a couple of bars too doesn't seem such a big deal to me now, but its still think there is a issue that needs to be addressed with a little coating of polymer over the outside metal or something.

It can drop from 3 down to 1 bar easily. After it drops, it takes a little bit of time for it to regain its ability to get back to 3 bars. See attached photos. So every phone will have signal loss if you cup it or hold it a certain way, now its just not as dramatic since I only have 3 to start, and not 5.

ya the 3g has been doing that for 2 years now. but it never was as bad as the iphone 4

I haven't noticed any problems with my phone (yet...), so I'm in absolutely no rush to get the update. I will eventually, but I'm not going to go out of way to download it now.

It was actually sometime in 2008 that they modified the display of signal reception. So it's going back to how it was pre-2.1.

Great show and neither am I. New bars look ridiculous.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

The 4.01 update didn't fix the awful audio quality people get when I answer the call via my plantronics Bluetooth headset. Seems like the only bug they have fixed is the signal strength 'lie'

Yippee! Proximity Sensor working!

Happy, happy, happy dance!

I'm 10 calls into the update and the Proximity sensor has not messed up yet!!!!!

I'm really surprised this was not publicized for this update???? This is MAJOR!

Tomorrow should be even better!:eek::eek:

Agree, but Apple itself contributed to this confusion by claiming that it was a software issue. Of course, that was before Consumer Reports came along.

I think it's funny now I can really see the "1" bar much better. Thanks Apple for allowing me to see clearly how crappy your network really is!!! What a fricking joke.

I told my wife when the iphone came out 3 years ago that this would hurt all of their product lines.

And yet you bought one anyway?

for me iPhone signal display is more or less the same as it was in 4.0. However i would say its more ... sensitive. Not a problem here. Still to test death grip.

as for the proximity sensor. i never had a problem with it, but maybe its just me but when i'm in a call and i remove the phone from my ear the screen stays black for a bit. i cant recall if it was like this in 4.0 but i think it may be thanks to 4.0.1. I'm sure this is a good thing :)

It's easy.
Do you remember how many bars had before installing ios4? Well, it should be the same as ios 3.1.3. So even with 3.1.3 you had 3 bars and you could drop 3 bars to 1.

Much Better!

I've installed the update on my iPhone 4:
I can see Better reception, not only bigger bars but more bars (more signal), that might be just a cosmetic fix but the result is I made several calls with only one bar of reception on the worst place to make calls in my house and had NO DROPS, no decreased upload or download speeds on data transfer.... So far it seems to be working fine! :apple:!

Oh, so when YOU'RE having a problem, a fix is MAJOR?

Jackass.
