I go from a un-crippled pda phone to dealing with this crap.... oh... wait... I had to edit my own tones in garageband before too... oh well, back to renaming m4r then m4a, that hack still works on macos, so does sftp'ing too.

Just a note of caution... the next iPhone OS update will wipe out your ringtones that you've uploaded via sftp.

I can't believe I was able to make a RingTone out of Daniel Johnston's "Love Wheel" from FUN (hell, I'll take it). I can make that a RingTone, but none of my Rolling Stones. Strange. Still, Daniel Johnston on a RingTone, what has the world come to??

Andrew, if you incorporated even a basic ringtone editor w/ a fade-out function into the application, I wouldn't even hesitate. As for now I'd have to go into Garageband, Logic Pro, etc. etc. -- kind of a pain in my butt. I will still probably buy iToner soon, but these two functions -- essentially mimicking Apple's interface -- would sell me in a moment.

We're working on doing just that. Our initial concerns were making it work with iTunes 7.4, but with that out of the way, we can do fun stuff like a cropper. :)

okay so heres something interesting to show you that, the whole ringtones deal is inconsistent with the bells. i only hvae like two purchased songs from itunes. one of them happened to be: hairspray - you cant stop the beat. without a bell next to it, i was able to make a ringtone out of it. i think they'll slowly update. they BETTER.

also just cuz im on here, i am VERY CURIOUS to know... about the $100 store credit. how does it work and when did you have to buy it? EVERYONE tells me different things!!!:apple:

Can no longer be made into a ringtone....

Wow that was quick, I was un-aware I even had the chance to do it in the first place...

I promised myself I would try one ringtone from Apple before I bought iToner. I just made one in iTunes and it is no better than iToner. The volume of the ringtone from Apple was a little bit louder, but that is about it. Oh yeah, the selection in iTunes is horrible!! I can now say I am going to purchase iToner.

Okay, I can confirm ringtones are gradually updating -- interesting... Now I have some choices from my purchased songs! Woot!

Um, every iphone owner before the price drop is eligible for $100. Unless you got it on an AMEX card, then you get to cheat amex outta $200 and apple outta $100.

So let me get it right.
If I want to have a ringtone from a popular (?) song, I have to pay $2, correct?

One dollar goes for the song in iTunes and the other one for editing ad buying the part of the song I want to use as a ringtone?

What if I only want the ringtone without the song? Could I pay $1 for just editing and buyng the ringtone? that wouldn't be a bad deal.

I didn't know it was cheating if it was their policy...but i have always thought credit card interest rates were cheating everyone.

I just made a ringtone out of Third Eye Blind's Semi-Charmed Life, which is one of my favorite songs of all time.. probably the last time i use the feature, seeing as I own the song on 2 different albums, but had to buy it again to make it a ringtone.. but either way it was really easy to do, and kind of fun. No huge deal if you ask me.. until they enable the ability to make a ringtone out of any song in your library.. but as an artist with ringtones available through other avenues, i understand that the royalties on ringtones are much greater than the royalties on song purchases, so I respect that Apple will only be selling ringtones on songs that are purchased, because my guess is they're not making much of a profit at all on this.

They're (going to be) cheating Apple not amex, and I didn't start it, i'll pm next time.

Doesn't appear that that is an option at this time.

lol, out of the 380 songs I have purchased, only two CDs can be made into Ringtones... "Business Up Front, Party in the Back," (good stuff, but I wouldn't make it a ringtone) and LOTR 3 soundtrack... umm, ya right.

Comedy Ringers?

Wow, it's sure nice to know if I ever want to make Mitch Hedberg or Dane Cook into ringtones, I have that option.

Edit: On second thought, the whole "Hellooooooo.. I'm a carrrrrrrrr" sketch might be rather entertaining. Or annoying beyond all reason. Guess we'll find out. ;)

You cannot judge the iTunes Store's selection of ringtones based on the first hour of an all-night (and possibly all-day) rollout.

Besides, they have ringtones for Regina Spektor and Laura Veirs. Laura Veirs!

If tomorrow or the next day they have a lot more, I will take that back, but currently it is pretty weak.

yeah, it seems like everything is rolling out. It is 2:30am over here, so I'm sure their intention was to do it at night while all the "normies" are sleeping. But they underestimate us!

Store --> Create Ringtone

After you have a song that can be converted to a ringtone. Go to the Menu Bar Select / Store --> Ringtone to get the ringtone maker.

My first ringtone... yay!

OK, so now that my library has updated a bit, I've turned my previously-purchased copy of "Destroy Everything You Touch" by Ladytron into my first (and primary) ringtone. SWEET. Heheh I could grow to like this, IF the collection of ringtones grows at a decent rate AND if they show the ringtone icon all the time on the music store (without you having to toggle it on for every darn search!)

And to the poster who brought up the idea of a Mitch Hedberg ringtone --- YES!!! :D

You want GPS in iTunes?

Well, you know how it is. Sometimes you just don't have the energy to walk outside and check the address. Now, with GPS built into every copy of iTunes, you can figure out exactly where you live right from your new iMac.

Note: GPS support for iTunes comes pre-installed with every new 24" iMac.

;);)

EDIT: Wanted to catch this before it starts... ***To those of you who are of lesser intelligence, no. iTunes does not really have GPS. ***

I'm betting Apple will also add a "top ringtones" list somewhere on the front page of the iTunes store. Maybe even a whole ringtones category. That would sure make it easier to find them.

I don't have a bell I have an ipod

For some reason on the right hand sidebar in itunes, I don't have a bell symbol next to ringtones, I have a ipod symbol. Does anyone else have this? I had some of my own ringotnes prior to the ringtone unlock from apple.

I am running itunes 7.4.1 on a powerbook with 10.4.10?
I tryed to erase the ringtones and reload, i even bought a stupid ringtone to see if it would change it, but have had no luck
