Any rumor that a contract WILL be signed at a certain time needs to be taken with more than a grain of salt. If there was an agreement, it would have been signed. Otherwise there is no agreement. At best there is an agreement to try to reach an agreement.
This is so correct. People who have never been in a negotiating table fall for this. Parties may be negotiating with a goal to agree by a set date, but they don't drag out to sign until a set date.

Why not? They might be the only one willing to do what Apple demands? They have issue with their engines, but cars are well made. I owned one. Who heard of Foxcon before the iPhones?
Oh really, what are the issues with the engines? That's quite tragic if so!

What is a "luxury car company" ? Every major manufacturer makes luxury cars, including VW, FCA, Nissan, Honda, Ford, GM, Toyota, and yes, even Hyundai.

And why does it need to be a "luxury car company" ? Is there something about manufacturing luxury cars that would make this theoretical "luxury car company" particularly adept at manufacturing a vehicle designed by Apple?
I don't think I have to explain to you what luxury brands are. It's not about what I think would be best, it's about Apple's other partnerships such as Hermès for Apple Watches. It simply doesn't seem to be a match that goes with their other high-end products and price structure. Who knows, maybe Hyundai is going to be Apple's new Foxconn.

Because their cars are cheap junk

Yeah wrong. Hyundai consistently ranks in the top 20% of all brands in ever consumer and industry survey.

Here's the Consumer Reports ranking:

Yes you do have to explain it because every auto manufacturer on Earth is "luxury car maker," with one possible exception being whoever makes the domestic brand in Kazhakstan. Every major auto manufacturer make luxury cars.

Do you even know who owns Bugatti, Rolls Royce, or Ferrari?

Yes, I do. :)

I'm surprised that they don't work with a luxury car company.
How so? Apple does not make "luxury" products. And of luxury car brands, who has the capacity or want to churn out hundreds of thousands of cars for Apple, a mass produced brand?

How is that relevant?
Do you even know who owns Bugatti, Rolls Royce, or Ferrari?
Ferrari is independent.

I'm not supporting Hyundai - the horrible dealings I had with them after the new Accent I purchased was an absolute lemon with countless issues the company refused to support. I haven't forgotten and will never recommend them.

Future look of me when the car rolls out:

Sorry to hear that. I had zero problems with my 2018 Elantra. Hyundai does fine by me.

People who say "Huyndai?!?" should actually look at the new 2021 and 2022 Hyundai, Kia and Genesis cars.. Those cars beat the market by a mile in design, build quality and features.

From what I am reading, Apple is looking for a partner who knows how to build cars to help Apple build their car and they do not intend to just brand an OEM vehicle as the "Apple Car". So those claiming this will be the "Genesis ROKR" or "Apple Ioniq" are likely incorrect in that thinking.

Apple doesn't have the expertise to build an auto factory and handle inventory management. So they need a third-party who does. Apple were said to be in talks with Magna Steyr of Austria because they do this kind of thing, but Magna either did not have the available capacity or was not interested in the production run (in terms of total vehicles) Apple was proposing.

So Apple is now looking at Hyundai because they have that expertise and they do have a "luxury" brand in Genesis (and before that, the Equus). Hyundai also makes luxury vehicles for the South Korean domestic market that are not exported to the US or EU. And to the fellow commenting about how they only buy Bentley - Luc Donckerwolke of Genesis used to run Bentley, Lamborghini and Audi.

And this report says this vehicle will be assembled in the United States, so not sure why some are complaining about Apple not choosing GM or Ford "to support American manufacturing". If they had gone with Magna, the cars would have been built in Austria.

And we still don't have any idea of what this "Apple Car" will be. Maybe it will be a high-end, human-controlled electric vehicle with limited autonomy like a Tesla. But I've also heard conjecture/speculation it might be a fully autonomous "city car" designed for short-range taxi / ride share services inside an urban and suburban area.

This will be an EV designed by Hyundai (based on their new EV platform) with Apple's self-driving tech and Apple's infotainment. In fact, this may be the end of Hyundai as a car brand. It's quite possible Hyundai will become Foxconn for the Apple Car, and it will keep Kia (perhaps rebranded) as a Korean non-luxury brand with Genesis being the Korean luxury brand.

From what I've heard the Palisade/Telluride models are really, really good, like almost X7 good (from someone that moved from an X7 to a Telluride).

Given the current price points, that means that Apple's MSRP might start at 50k so they can make a decent profit. Plus they can contract with Hyundai for service.
My only problem with the Telluride is that it's way too underpowered equipped with the V6 (< 300 HP). You literally have to floor it for it to take off (with a little lag). If it had a better engine, this would be a really great SUV. Once the ICE is replaced with an electric motor, Korean cars will be unstoppable.

For people complaining about Hyundai, the agreement might just be for Hyundai to be the manufacturer but all the design and technology will be Apple’s. In that case, Hyundai would be like Foxcon. I’ve never heard anybody refuse to buy an iPhone because have which company manufactured it.
Apple can't design a car. Give it a break already.
