I'm surprised that they don't work with a luxury car company.
who's to say they couldn't partner with BMW or the like to produce a luxury 'Pro' version of their car? In the same way that Samsung is both their biggest competitor and their own supplier for parts of their own tech is the same way that the iCar could itself exist in iterations from base model (Hyundai Supplied) to Luxury (BMW/Mercedes Supplied) which utilises existing industry talent and tech while in a sense elevating Apple above them all by making them competitors amongst themselves for Apple's business

For people complaining about Hyundai, the agreement might just be for Hyundai to be the manufacturer but all the design and technology will be Apple’s. In that case, Hyundai would be like Foxcon. I’ve never heard anybody refuse to buy an iPhone because have which company manufactured it.

It really amazes me how heated conversations about car brands can be. With that being said, unless you have a stick up your tuchus, Korean cars are good/great now depending on the model. If this news come to pass, I pray Kia/Hyundai/Genesis will fix their dealership network.

Surely there are pro and cons with every brand. However, just blinding praising or bashing a brand because of preconceptions is just stupid.

I'll wager that we'll see an Apple Car — rumored for 2024 (or later) — *before* the U.S. returns to the Moon — which has a planned date of 2024!

They should include a free iPhone with each car!

The 1-Dimensional thinking process that is evident in the seemingly knee-jerk reaction based commenting on this website is really off-putting considering it's supposed to be a place where Apple enthusiasts congregate. People that have been following Apple since it's inception know the company is always doing things differently, and yet half the comments are complaining about Hyandai being the choice or that a luxury car brand wasn't chosen for "image" purposes...

But imagine for a second a world where Apple once again does things differently, creates multiple tiers in their car range and allocates them to different suppliers/producers to assist building?

Picture an entry-level iCar, produced as the article describes by Hyandai using their infrastructure.
Now picture Apple's second, mid-range vehicle, produced in partnership with Volvo, utilising their infrastructure and talent but equally built around Apple's Ecosystem & features.
Then picture Apple's 3rd, high tier "Pro" edition of it's iCar, produced and designed in partnership with Mercedes, BMW, Audi or even Ferrari, utilising each car manufacturer's unique talent and approach to car construction while all being built equally as strong into Apple's ecosystem.

You guys need to think bigger when it comes to Apple's long term goals

Why Hyundai man? Why not Mercedes Benz or BMW???
It would not make sense for them to partner with Apple and let Apple control the way the vehicle is positioned, that's what they do with their brand. They do not need Apple to position themselves in the market.

I'm not supporting Hyundai - the horrible dealings I had with them after the new Accent I purchased was an absolute lemon with countless issues the company refused to support. I haven't forgotten and will never recommend them.

Future look of me when the car rolls out:

I have two Hyundais and I really satisfied with them, but I have never heard anything good about Hyunda dealers, and indeed the two different dealers I bought my cars from were pretty much garbage people.
That said, I will still be pretty interested in this car.

Well, Hyundai has the Genesis line, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them line this up under the Genesis lineup.
Hyundai was one of the first companies to add CarPlay, which was one of the reasons I bought one over other cars I was looking at. Plus, in a very un-Apple way, Hyundai has a lot of standard features that other companies only include as add-ons, so even their lower-end packages match up well against similarly priced "luxury" brands.

The world is going to be going through a huge change in the next 20 - 30 years when petrol & diesel cars are fazed out. There’s an estimated 1.4 billion cars in the world - looks like it will be a strong market!

Don’t knock Hyundai until you see what can be achieved through partnership. Who’d heard of Foxconn before the iPhone?

I'm willing to bet this is an early iPhone-AT&T(Cingular) situation. Apple is going to demand more ownership/control than a luxury brand would be willing to offer, just like the iPhone did with carrier labeling and no pre-installed carrier bloatware.

Well, if Apple does make one, all the car metaphors used here on MR forums to prove a point about tech will actually be valid.

Sample MR post by tech bro:

"Let me put it this way, if you walked into a BMW dealership expecting to get XYZ and but were really shown ABC, would you be happy???? BMW would not get away with that. Same with the Firewire 800 ports on the G3 tower."

What is a "luxury car company" ? Every major manufacturer makes luxury cars, including VW, FCA, Nissan, Honda, Ford, GM, Toyota, and yes, even Hyundai.

And why does it need to be a "luxury car company" ? Is there something about manufacturing luxury cars that would make this theoretical "luxury car company" particularly adept at manufacturing a vehicle designed by Apple?
