I don't like that Apple is trying to be in every business that it can be. I want them to just focus on making the best computers. The phone, watch, tablet - these are all computing devices. Why does Apple need to make hardware that has nothing to do with computers? I know there will probably be some kind of computer in the car, but it's not really the same thing.

Same thing with HomePod, like I just don't see why they need to be making that when there are several other companies they could partner with on design who make the exact same product. Apple fans will tell you that the HomePod is the best smart speaker they have every owned or whatever, but everyone knows there is really nothing unique about the product, it's just a good rendition of the same thing made by several other companies such as Sonos, Bose, JBL, etc. I understand some projects like AirPods - since they are so essential to using the iPhone that it would feel strange of Apple didn't have their own product in that line.
The Apple Watch is an iphone accessory, as is the AirPods.

Come to think of it - a car would certainly make for the ultimate iPhone accessory.

The Ford Mustang has them all BEAT including TESLA
APPLE should have bought Tesla when Elon Musk offered it to Tim Cook but Cook refused to take his Call.

Hindsight is so great and everyone are so smart several years later!, how many ppl bought Tesla stock during those days ? I looked at the dates , you would make 13x on your money !!! oh you didnt ? so anyone else with a grain of common sense in investing , gamblers? sure some made money on that stock.

Gambling and buying companies left and right because "they call you up" doesnt seems like a good practice for any company , moreover a company like Apple , if you think Tesla is the only company that approached apple for a buyout... welp... but it is a nice underdog story which makes headlines.

Can you imagine telling Siri where you want to go and then it refusing? I can absolutely see this happening if people try to attend a political rally of the opposing party that Apple currently supports. Also, lol at Siri behind the wheel. No way!

So for years people have been telling me that Apple is the BMW of devices.

Where as its actually Hyundai.
I call an Apple device the Acura cause it "just works" like all Honda-made vehicles but is also semi premium. And people don't pimp out their Acuras like they do with Hondas. BMW implies it breaking down and being sold for nothing later, unless you got the particular M3 years that became popular.

Why Hyundai! Why not Mercedes or BMW or Ford for that matter. I don’t want to spend 70-80k on rebadged base model Hyundai!

I'm not supporting Hyundai - had horrible dealings I had with them after the new Accent I purchased was an absolute lemon with countless issues. The company refused to support. I haven't forgotten and will never recommend them.

Future look of me when the car rolls out:

I don't support Samsung. But Samsung manufacturers the displays for iPhones. I nevertheless buy iPhones. Make no mistake, no matter who manufactures it, it is going to be a "Apple" Car.

We would come back in 2024 to see there are no Apple Glasses, and No Apple Car.

So it will be completely coincidence that it will most likely shares 50 to 70% of the same parts as some other Hyundai car model?

Now, if it was made by Hyundai and 50% of the parts came from a model of Mercedes THAT would be surprising.

Sorry, but I don’t buy it. This story feels flawed and the details and dates are all wrong.

Hyundai is only the 8th largest car makers in the world. Meaning there are 7 others which are bigger, richer and have a better distribution arm than Hyundai.

Brand equity and prestige aside, there is no way Apple, one of the top five brands in the world would join forces with anything but a solid first-tier brand and one which would be on the same playing field and which not stand as much to gain as Hyundai.

When Apple wanted to do a partnership for their watch, did they partner with Seiko, Casio, Timex, Movado or Coach? No. They saddled up with Hermès. The leading leather design house and global fashion leaders. They could have gone anywhere. Everyone would have jumped at the chance. But the prestige and brand equity for Hermès was on par with what Hermès brought to Apple. It was a symbiotic relationship without a down side for either.

Then even with headphones. They didn’t partner, they bought the leading headphones company in the world (Beats) and smartly kept it a separate entity. But we all knew Beats are part of the Apple ecosystem.

So now the most secretive company in the world is suddenly getting sloppy with their deal signing and we have production dates and advance Beta versions being announced? It so does not look, sound or feel right on too many levels.

My guy tells me they go with a larger, richer and more diverse car company that already has both electric and gas models at a higher price point and higher brand equity than the South Korean brand that only entered the car market in 1967. Or, they go with a brand new all electric brand- like a Tesla, VW or the Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi Alliance. Much more on par with Apple and more sexy than Hyundai. I could be wrong, although doubtful, I am just not going to hold my breath until the news comes out at a joint press conference with both sides present and no more accidental comments being made 2 years early.

Smart move by Apple, there is only so much money you can make of selling iPhones, it’s time to step it up and Apple knows this. First ever company to be valued at 10 trillion?! Very likely

I can see Apple dominating the tech and electric car industry for decades, only the sky is the limit for the biggest and most influential brand in the world.

Not sure why some people are apprehensive against Hyundai. We're not in the 90s anymore. Hyundai (and even Kia) cars are quite nice nowadays.

Apple should just buy Mercedes before Tesla does it and build a decent car
It’s not just what you see that Apple buys. Car companies come with a lot of baggage that Apple has mostly avoided subbing it’s manufacturing overseas in countries like China with lax employee and environmental protections where they would be kinda hands off in personal responsibilities to the local governments. Let’s remember when the car companies were bailed out, it had to do with things like worker liabilities/pensions.
I don’t see why they would want to open that can of worms now.

The car purchase was my first vehicle - new and it had electrical and engine issues from the start. Both the dealer and the company did little to address them. Just my personal experience but I won’t support an Apple Car if it’s tied to Hyundai.

Besides getting a $1,000 phone that’s a lemon vs a $25,000 car is not a fair comparison.

Exactly. Apple needs realiable manufacturing at scale, not prestige branding that they will provide themselves. They want a partner who's willing to accept presumably pretty harsh contractual terms.

Yep. The larger car companies do not need or want to bother with Apple’s car to compete against them. The smaller niche boutique car companies do not have the expertise or technologies to build at scale. It’s about finding the right fit.

Because it will be an Apple Car, not a Mercedes or a Hyundai car.... Apple needs a manufacturer not a a brand.

Hyundai is obviously not a premium brand like Apple, so a possible reason to team up with a 'low cost supplier' is the ability to achieve margin targets ...

I'm going to speculate that the reason Apple didn't choose a Chinese company such as Geely (who owns Volvo, Polestar) is probably because of the anti-China political climate in the US. Chinese EV companies would be very eager to work with Apple I would assume, giving Apple more options and bargaining power.

And Apple partnered with Goldman Sachs for their credit card - a company that had zero presence in the credit card industry until now and so needed Apple enough that they were willing to accept whatever terms Apple dictated to them.

I suspect it's the same logic here. Hermes is an influential brand, but has nothing to do with watchmaking. Apple didn't buy Beats for the headphones brand, they bought a music streaming service, plus Dr Dre and his connections with the music industry.

It makes sense that Apple would want to choose a company whom they felt needed Apple more than Apple needed them. This would give Apple enough leverage in their contractual negotiations to be able to dictate terms and get their way.

I agree that this is all currently still speculation, but with Apple, it's all about power and control in the relationship.

An Apple car based on the Hyundai Kona would be awesome. It would also make a lot of business sense because it's probably EV with the best value for money on the market. It's also the most efficient non-Tesla EV as far as range per kWh is concerned.
