I would be so happy if this happened. Verizon has a serious lack of good phones. Everything seems to be a PDA phone but the only way Id want a PDA phone is an iPhone. I plan on developing for iPhone so I would switch to ATT just to get one.

If iPhone came to Verizon Id stay with verizon.

This is my dilemma....I want an iPhone when they update it in June but would prefer Verizon to AT&T. Come on Apple, do it!! It's a good move.

Why is it so hard for people to understand? The negotiations are for 2010. By then Verizon will have launched their 4G networks in selected cities so Apple will have an excuse to launch an iphone that uses LTE. It would be the same iphone that AT&T (which will most likely accelerate their own 4G network launch) and the rest of the planet will also use.

No, Apple will not launch a new gen iphone for both AT&T and verizon (GSM and CDMA) in June 2009. And duh, since it will still be the year 2009 in June the exclusivity deal with AT&T will still be in effect.

My god this isn't rocket science people!

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple are talking to almost every network in the world about the iPhone. Who wouldn't want to sell it?

well when you have to give 40% of the derived revenue per handset back to Apple then I suspect lots of network execs. will be trying to find a way of selling more of a rival companies handset without compromising overall sales.

I jumped ship from Verizon and bought an Iphone when it lauched almost 2 years ago. Now that my contract is about to expire I was preparing to just upgrade when to refresh happens in june/july but now I think I may just hold off and wait to see if anymore news comes our way in Q3/Q4 of 2009. Because I would jump back to Verizon in a heartbeat. This ATT service (bad reception and ever worse text messaging delays) here in NY/NJ is enough to make me never look back.

You and millions of more users=about to expire. Yay. It's good for us, the consumer. Might get apple interested in computers again.

Whenever I hear these rumors about Verizon and AT&T I always have that glimmer of hope!
Verizon would be PERFECT for the iPhone in my area. I'll be happy to pay a termination fee for AT&T anyway. But what is basically hanging me onto this service is the iPhone because I love it.
Time will tell I suppose.

I wish this happened sooner...

I am willing to wait until iPhone is available at Verizon. AT&T coverage around Washington, DC is very spotty and their phones do not work in metro.:D

This may be a good time to point out that all the articles about Verizon's LTE roll out say that Verizon expects the first LTE smartphones in mid-2011. Even then, those phones will need to be able to back off to CMDA (unless Verizon will have built out their network that thoroughly in the next two years).

If Apple makes a Verizon network capable phone in the near future, it has to support CDMA. Hopefully, the same model iPhone supports both CDMA and GSM. iPhones that look alike but work on different networks may be confusing.

Based on this time line, it looks like AT&T wants to extend their exclusivity until LTE networks have deployed. (I think AT&T's are scheduled for 2011 or 2012.) Once AT&T and Verizon use the same network standard, exclusivity may cost AT&T too much money to make it worth their while.

"It would be an understatement to say that I am disappointed that Apple doesn't *already* have a CDMA iPhone. There is NO legitimate argument for not creating one (or using a dual-CDMA/HSPA chipset in the single model iPhone) as there are ~100 million CDMA customers in the United States --- easily the largest potential market for the iPhone so far based upon total cellphone users and the iPhone's extensive popularity among the public."

Nonsense on just about every count, I'm afraid. The US is just one market, and Apple's already getting a reasonable share of it - anyone who really wants an iPhone that much in the US is moving to AT&T. The rest of the world's a massively bigger market and in many respects more sophisticated in terms of maturity and some of the things that people do with their phones (e-payment in Japan being a good example). Apple would be out of their mind to spend time and money catering for a provincial requirement like US CDMA when there's a whole big GSM world to go after.

This reminds me of the US senator who tried to insist that a CDMA network got built in Iraq after the invasion, despite the fact that it's completely surrounded by countries running GSM - the point, unsurprisingly, being that he had CDMA hardware vendors in his state. Fortunately someone actually saw sense and Iraq joined the rest of the world.

I think it is pretty shady for USA Today to report such a speculative article as news. Reading it from that source, may give the impression that it's definitely happening. On web sites such as this, no problem. Just more speculation, but I'm wondering who Verizon is paying to spread such rumors, to stop the bleeding of losing customers to AT+T for the iPhone.

I do believe, however, that some competition among carrier would be good for consumers.

I switched for the iphone. I have no clue how someone as megalomaniacal about quality could let the iphone go to AT&T. it's been absolutely horrible. great gear. horrible phone.

You completely missed his point. He wants to keep Verizon, so if he switches to ATT in June and then Verizon offers the iPhone, he's pretty much locked into his ATT contract.

I'm in the same boat. My Verizon contract expires in August, and don't want to wait on the "chance" of them offering the iPhone "sometime" in 2010.

Let's see now ... exclusivity deal expires in 2010 ... That means I'll be about 1/2 way or more through the current 2-year contract with AT&T. I'd say the timing is pretty convenient as far as choice is concerned on renewal. :p

I really doubt any 4G network will be ready by the time MY exclusivity contract with AT&T is up. However, I give it a good chance Apple will release a dual-band hybrid iPhone while the carriers are transitioning. One thing is for sure, both AT&T and Apple have to have contingency plans for existing customers with current iPhones if service or network changes. The easiest path to 4G for all carriers would seem to involve a dual band phone.

An ambitious path to 4G in the US would also involve the assimilation of Sprint by Verizon and T-Mobile by AT&T. With only two major players in the field, it seems to me there would be increased coverage and more robust competition than exists today. I've noticed that spreading cell tower coverage between more than 2 carriers lowers my signal while transitioning between cell towers - especially on rural interstates.

Yes! I can't wait for it to happen. It seems like it would more likely happen when AT&T and Verizon both switch to the 4G network and are using the same hardware. I don't think Apple would want to have to make 2 different iPhones.

I can see this. I hope it's true.

In NYC, where I live, ATT's cell phone service is notoriously bad. It's been written about in the NY Times and people here just accept it to use their iPhones. I can't make a call in my midtown apartment. The ATT signal is weak and has problems penetrating the NY buildings. The problem is, if you go to their website, my area is listed as having the "best" service, i.e. there will be no improvements. I know from reading these forums that ATT has it's strengths in different parts of the country. So all I ask is to have an iPhone with a provider that works in my major metropolitan area. Verizon would be very welcome and I know many here in NYC would switch in a second.

Sounds good, Verizon vs. AT&T. The only problem I foresee is if they make exclusive to Verizon. I have 4 iPhones on a family plan with AT&T and having to switch networks if I want to upgrade the phones is ridiculous. As long as apple makes it a choice between Verizon and AT&T, and uses the same hardware, I am fine with it.

Listen to Apple's conference call ATT to stay

Apple has said NO to going anywhere, but ATT. The COO complimented ATT and indicated that Verizon cdma, is a dated tech. So this is as of the 4/22 conference call

Verizon's trying to keep everyone from abandoning ship.

AT&T has the iPhone.
Sprint has the Pre.
TMobile has the G1.

Verizon has made some really bad partnering decisions when it comes to successful smartphones... So maybe some rumors will keep their customers from bailing.

Don't confuse the iPhone/AT&T with the G1/Pre hype. They're no where near the same thing. they're trying to be, but they just aren't.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. Especially if Verizon's financials, which are coming out today stink compared to AT&T's, this is designed to pacify major investors. No way is this coming from Apple - why would they want to undercut current AT&T sales?

Also look at the source -- USA Today is the same paper that falsely reported the AT&T & Apple had a 5 year exclusive (if it were true, nobody else can get the iPhone until 2012). Did they ever print a retraction? No. Their credibility is zero. They are being used as a megaphone by people with agendas.

I switched from verizon to ATT for the iphone.
The only reason I wouldn't switch back would be their unsolicitated advertizing and their in house verizon mobile web as a default.

other than that Verizon service in my area is head and shoulders above ATT.
