"If Verizon were to also offer the iPhone, it would likely reduce the number of customers switching to AT&T."

Including my wife and I who can't stand AT&T. We're lucky if we can get or make 40% of the calls. Sure they have more bars. But that doesn't mean you can make phone calls or the person on the other end of the phone can hear you.

Funny but the data part works a lot better than the phone part. Is that Apple's fault or AT&T's?

What matters to me is the quality of the cell phone service provided. Verizon has better cell service in the NY area than ATT. I presume if there are continued talks that the Verizon CDMA issue can be resolved. In terms of providing better cell service, my apartment has wifi, my office has wifi, alot of other places I go have wifi. So 3G/4G is less of a big deal to me. All I want is a good strong cell signal, and in NY, that's the one thing ATT does NOT provide. What I don't understand about ATT - because of their weaker cell signal - is why they can't use a software switch and send calls to wi-fi (VOIP) when there is no cell signal. It's the technology that Truphone and Skype use as apps so it would be easy enough to use and supplement their inferior service.

Again? Seriously?

I would love to see this happen. Especially with Verizon's upcoming 4g network.

I would LOVE to go a week without a thread talking about Verizon vs. AT&T. How many times to we need to rehash 4G and LTE development? Well I guess until Verizon leaves CDMA and goes to GSM format...

Again, Verizon's CDMA service is going to be phased out so it's irrelevant in the equation. 4G will make a difference to you because unlike 3G which lived alongside "voice," LTE, i.e, 4G, will be it. There will be no "voice." Everything you do on your phone will use 4G/LTE data.

This also means that service between Verizon and ATT is likely to be fairly equal. Given the cost of rolling out LTE I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon and ATT had a roaming agreement similar to what Sprint and Verizon now have. For example, Verizon has exclusive service in the DC Metro but b/c of the roaming agreement a Spring phone works too.

so how is it that USA today knows about this? It always cracks me up when USAT and WSJ, etc predict future apple products.:p

Is Verizon talking to AT&T? : Probably, Apple will eventually have to create an LTE phone, and since AT&T and Verizon will both going to LTE $G it makes sense for them to talk thinks through.

Will there be a Verizon Iphone next year?: No. Considering that ATT is trying to get another year of exclusivity, which i believe they will get, i dont see the Iphone opening up till July 2011. 2011 is perfect because by then Verizon should have full 4G coverage (for Apple to release in 2010 on Verizon, you'd also need a CDMA chip to fall back on when not in 4G coverage, which Apple wont do considering they're going to make 1 4G phone), and by then those who buy the Iphone this year will be out of their contracts.

I dont think Verizon will be able to "cripple" the Iphone as Apple will want the Iphone user experience to be the same across all networks.

It may be unlikely, but I feel ATT has milked the iPhone user dry. In areas where there is spotty service at best ATT doesn't upgrade its cell system and leaves 3G for the big metropolitan areas. I little competition would only be good for the iPhone users - and would let the customer chose the best service in their area. If this deal with Verizon ever happened I think it would be clear that ATT would lose hundreds of millions for their lack of concern for the everyday user.

I totally agree! The nearest 3G service is Pensacola from where I live , which is a 45 minute drive and a place I seldom visit.
The question remains if the exclusivity is extended with ATT and Apple, will ATT finally broaden the 3G network (As they said they would over 3 years ago) to surrounding areas , instead of big cities

Um that article is no different then the one here. Both sources of the original information are the same (USA Today)

Economically it still doesn't make sense to develop a product that will be outdated in a year. They could simply wait that extra year and develop the same product that will reach the same customers plus more (IE both AT&T and Verizon) with LTE technology.

It's not like the Verizon customers are going anywhere or iphone sales are hurting to the point that they need the extra sales. A year or more won't kill anything as it stands now. The "lost" sales that do occur will be captured during the next phone replacement cycle - the turnover for cell phones is so high that it doesn't really matter.

This makes absolutely no sense. CDMA getting phased out? When, 2015? You do know that AT&T and Verizon are both still installing brand new 2G sites nation wide, right?

Please say it isn't so

Please Apple don't go to Verizon. I left Verizion for the iPhone when the original iPhone came out. I don't really want to go back to Verizon and I see nothing wrong with only one carrier in the US. I have been happy with AT&T and their service.

I fired Cingular/AT&T after nine years because of poor Customer Service. After 18 months with Verizon, I'm sick of their disabling key features that my cell phone contains. They make it impossible to send pictures/video to your computer via bluetooth to name one.

Don't be fooled by Verizon

Let's face it, Verizon has blown a number of major decisions regarding exclusivity deals. Now they want you to think that they will be getting the iPhone 'soon'. This is another marketing ploy to get you to wait...and wait...and wait...and not switch to another cell phone provider because of their incompetance.

I'm a T-Mobile customer and I hope this really comes true. I have had verizon in the past and they are great, and I have also had ATT and they suck ass. They screwed up my account with some hispanics and every time i called in, they thought i was jose. Even my SSN was messed up in the system. I wish for anything that takes any bit of profit from those c**k suckers over at ATT.

Apple staying with one carrier forever will never happen. Eventually, they will be with every carier. Remember, Apple wants to be in everyones pocket, not jut ATT customers. They could give a rats ass what happens to ATT, as long as they are selling iPhones. Basically, they are whoring ATT to get introduced into the cellular industry. Now that they have grounded themselves, they will start appearing for every carrier.

Don't forget, guys, when Verizon begins roll-out of their 4G network, it's not going to be "the network" that you guys are all excited to see the iPhone on. It's going to be very limited in coverage initially and it's unlikely Apple will build-in a CDMA fall-back for when there is no LTE signal.

Unless Sprint dies and T-Mobile doesn't use sone sort of wonky, unique frequency for LTE, Apple's not going to be with every carrier.

Honesty I don't care as long as this thing happens 2 years from when they release the new iPhone this summer

J/K I don't know though AT&T is TRYING and they don't restrict Apple. . .No Logos, No OS, just ongoing support for Apple. Now Verizion might add that red check and try to change it, SO NOT FEELING IT

I would stay with AT&T, the service is improving and they're working with Apple constantly to make this iPhone experience great!

I could see Apple walking out on a deal if they have to throw that red check on

It's a great thing. Just think about it. Maybe if they were competing for customers, they just might drop the cost down to get more customers. I'd love it.

Well I don't think that the price would drop that much... ATT and Verizon would just make deals so they don't interferate with each other sells... In other words, it would be like a cartel...

In Canada, Rogers and Fido (which is owned by Rogers) offer contracts with small differences... They don't offer the same contracts so they don't need to lower the price!

I think it's a smart ploy/leak to get AT&T worried and concede to whatever Apple wants. Hahaha.

Am I right on this thinking.........Apple would still have to support the CDMA network in areas that 4G won't work (a lot of places)? Would they put the work into that architecture especially since it's only US we are talking about?

This does make a lot of sense, this can just be Apple showing AT&T some people would switch in a heartbeat.

Same here, I was set on switching over once the new iPhone is released, but now this news.

AT&T doesn't have 3G where I live, whereas Verizon does. I don't want to be stuck in a 2 year contract with them until 2011 if Verizon is coming out with it in 2010.

Arghhhh!!!!

You won't be missing anything in 2010. It won't realistically be 2011 until Verizon has their LTE network setup.
Unless of course Verizon has greatly accelerated their plans to be ready some time in 2010. The June WWDC announcements should have all the information needed to make a future buying decision.

Thats correct, and exactly why i dont see them going with Verizon until 4G LTE is fully covered, they would still have to throw a CDMA chip in there at this point, and i just dont see it happening

You see?....it worked....Verizon has successfully delayed your purchase of the iPhone with all of these 'rumors'. Verizon has nothing to offer you in order to retain your loyalty/business....so they are manipulating you, Apple, and ATT for their own benefit.
