I guess the wait is over, Apple has finally made a netbook. Just not at netbook prices.

No Thunderbolt

No Thunderbolt - so what display is this supposed to connect to? Feels like the keynote was missing something

We're heading back 10 years to the days of bent PowerBook G4's with the lack of MagSafe. Crazy decision.

Your not supposed to play heavy games.. not the target market.

Its lightweight for usage ( ie., don't expect to get much out of say Final Cut Pro ), and supposed to be - forces you - to be ultra portable - that is - including many wired devices - i.e., printer, (wired ) mouse etc all at once.

If you want to connect multiple devices, you do this wirelessly - WIFI / bluetooth.

iPad notebook? It should be priced better. This, the Air's and pro's are too close in price hence why I went for the Pro. A better long term decision. I have an iPad for portability and light tasks.

All the people asking how they're going to connect displays, peripherals, game on it etc are not the target market.

Stop expecting Apple to release products that do everything. This is clearly meant to be an ultra portable, iPad running OS X sort of device, not to be running games, displays or anything like that.

I do feel it was a missed trick if the power adapter isn't also a hub of some sort though.

Why can't Apple just leave things alone? Everyone just wanted a Macbook Air with a retina screen. They give you the retina screen but take away all the connectivity. Everyone wanted an updated Mini, they gave us a speed and spec bump but took away the upgradeability.

The problem is that Ive has way too much power internally at Apple and no one left to tell him when his **** stinks. He is surrounded by "yes" men. Having absolutely no connectivity so Ive can make the laptop a few millimetres thinner is insanity and evidence of his form-over-function design philosophy taken to the absolute extreme.

The problem is the consumer is telling them yes and yes every year, more and more so as the keynote stated.

Hence, underpowered... If you need a less powerful portable solution get an iPad. This is supposed to be a computer on which you'll run real application on.

A) Underpowered means that it does not have sufficient power for its intended use. Not that it has less power than some other completely different product. By your logic, the fastest laptop ever made is underpowered. Because there is some mainframe computer somewhere that is more powerful.
B) an iPad is a completely different product, for different uses. It is ludicrous to suggest that people should choose an iPad over an rMBP if they wish more portability. Why not let them decide want they want themselves.

I guess this is the rumored "iPad Pro"? Kind of a merge between an iPad and a MacBook Air, but this time the "MacBook" name reappears.

Looks fantastic and love the 12" Retina display, however for me the lack of multiple USB is a problem and the CPU might not be strong enough for my needs. Apple`s first generation products have come with baggage in the past, so I would really want to be certain that the Core "M" CPU wont throttle under heavy load as this has been a constant challenge for Apple over the years, given the Core "M" CPU low nominal frequency and high turbo boost.

As I am in the market for a highly portable backup system to my MBPr`s, the new MacBook would work, equally I can envisage multiple scenarios where an 11" Air would serve me far better being more versatile; Thunderbolt, 2 x USB 3.0, now with Broadwell the performance is ever better, especially the i7 with 512.

With my 13" 2.8 MBPr I can forgo all chargers cables etc for the majority of the time, with the new MacBook I would have to carry some type of adapter for USB, HDMI etc. flash drives are ubiquitous and commonly used for large file transfer.

Love the design, however as I require it for work purpose, I can see if not too careful I could potentially "paint myself into a corner"...

Q-6

No fans? How will it not cook itself if you choose to do anything intensive. Like gaming? I'll stick to my Pro ty.

Obviously this is not a gaming laptop. Remarks like this and so many others are entirely /facepalm inducing.

If you look at this and think, "But I can't do X," then the simple answer is that this laptop wasn't designed for X. Why does everyone discuss this new computer as if all computers can do all things?

A strange update. Lots of impressive engineering in this, but they've made this MacBook tier lighter and more portable than the Air. Don't understand that from a marketing POV.

Unless they've integrated MagSafe into the USB-C port somehow, this is going to be a real problem for a 2-pound notebook.

The most bizarre aspect of this is the Intel Atom M chip. That thing is a dog. Why not use an A9x chip at that point?

This computer is a waste of people's hard earned money.

Why doesn't Apple just call it what it is - an ipad with a keyboard.

1 port, no headphone jack, 12 inch screen, weak processor, $1300 base.

Spray paint a computer gold and call it "revolutionary"

That's messed up.

There is a headphone jack

so if Im charging this macbook but need to charge my iphone as well, I cant do that b/c theres only 1 port?

So charging my macbook, my iphone, and have a flash drive plugged in isnt possible anymore on this macbook without an adapter, correct?

Tradeoffs. You could always charge the iPhone with the supplied power charger.....

Positives:

Retina

Negatives:

Everything else. I'll stick with my 2011 i5 Air. Its performance is still plenty for what I use it for. The whole "1 port" thing (plus headphone jack) really is a problem for my uses.

I can fully understand that there are a lot of people that need/want more than one port. I personally have never once had more than one device plugged in at a time. I'm curious to know what percentage of the overall MBA using population falls into each category. Apple must have an idea of this, and feel it is not an issue...

I am honestly surprised at how much praise this new MacBook is getting. I am very underwhelmed. For starters, it has an entry price of 1299? That's entirely too much. They did not need to put 8/256 in the base model. They could have had a base unit at 4/128 and charged 999 making it much more appealing to the casual user. If I was purchasing a new MB today, there's no way I wouldn't take the base model 13 inch rMBP for the same price. More power, more connectivity, same retina display etc.

The new MB is neat in its size and such but even with the retina display, I would consider it a downgrade, or a less capable machine than I currently have with my MBA. I was considering selling my MBA on Craigslist to get this new MB but I am not the least bit interested now. The size is fine but in my opinion it is ludicrous to pay 1300 dollars for a laptop that I can't charge my iPhone and iPad on at the same time without rigging up some kind of charger/port adapter which all uses one port.

They could have just put a retina display in the Air everyone would have been happy.

Looks like those are the only 2 configurations you can buy, either 256GB/1.1 GHz or 512GB/1.2 GHz. Surprised you can't customize it further. I was expecting to pay a lot more than $1,599.
