I'm not in the market for one one, but if I was I'd be very careful about a purchase. I got 'stung' on the iPad 3 when it was released in March, only for it to receive a substantial upgrade 6 mths later. With the disconnect about the new with the 'old' iPad pro, I can see history repeating, I'd say hold until October unless u desperately need, same goes for apple watch!

This is super tempting. I'd need at least 128GB, so $749. What I really want to upgrade for is the Apple Pencil, so add $99. Not sure if my current case would fit. I guess I could try to cut an opening for the flash and drill some holes for the speakers? Not sure how well that would turn out, so another…oh wait. They don't the Leather Smart Case any more? Or any Smart Case? So I have to buy a separate Smart Cover with a cheap Silicon Case for $108? For that much I might as well get the Smart Keyboard for $169. Oh…that isn't even a case? $108 combo it is.

Ok, so now I'm up to $956 + tax. Damn. I think I'm going to wait and see what iOS X brings to the table for the Pro iPads before laying down that much cash. If that checks out then I might wait for a sale or just wait for the next version.

As for the True Tone Display, that's something that has been available for desktop color calibration hardware/software for years. You're supposed to leave it plugged in to measure ambient light temperatures. In my experience many designers and photographers consider it to be rather gimmicky. It's true that the human eye matches white balance to the surrounding light color. But I think it also needs to have a Control Center toggle because if I'm using Lightroom Mobile I just want to make sure my color balance is correct so it looks as good as possible across most devices online. It's something I think could be really useful at times, but also really annoying for certain types of creative work without a quick access toggle. Here's to hoping iOS X lets us customize our control center toggles. I'd rather have a switch for that than Airplane mode which I use once per year.

Things are getting fragmented. iPad mini, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro, iPad Pro... mini? which is an iPad Air essentially. As for the iPhone; iPhone SE. What will the next one be called? iPhone 2 SE? I don't know. Apple's naming convention has spiraled. The protruding camera on the iPad Pro mini is stupid. Have fun writing while it wobbles.

Look at the MacBook / Pro / Retina line-ups as well. Very reminiscent of the Apple product line-up pre-Steve Jobs's return in the late 90s. Steve came back and culled it down to basically 4 models. I realize that was before iPads, iPhones, etc., but still, there is something to be said for simplicity.

So... we're going to address the falling iPad sales by introducing a new, more expensive version? With memory bumps now at an extra $150 and $300? I mean, if you're going to do that, at least change the form factor so you can tell it's a different machine. I'm looking at my original iPad here, and other than being thinner and lighter you'd have to look hard to find the differences.

This is just so perplexing. I'd love to replace my kids' iPad 2's (not Air) with something with more memory, but there's really nothing on the low end, which is where I think Apple is getting killed. There's a huge market for people like me not looking for something that has great frame rates for gaming, but for something you can do light browsing and educational apps. I get that they don't want to make crap, but I can't imagine that Apple couldn't make a great machine that cost less.

Boo.

It is not as fragmented as it looks. There are "regular" iPads in 7.9" and 9.7" and Pro iPads at 9.7" and 12.9". The latter support the pencil, have better speakers and screens.

Apple may well be trying to simplify the iPhone naming scheme. Maybe they won't have numbers and will just be referred internally by the release year, similar to Macs.

I don't understand people, most of you were happy too see an iPad upgrade now you are complaining, listening to the people here you so hard to be satisfied. Pretty much this blog and others spoiled all that was coming putting all the information a head of time. We do not know when Apple will upgrade the Mac Pro line at this time unless we have more leeks, just hold on tide. And stop winning......
You're aware that people wanted something and are complaining about some silly things about it, I mean, any company can release something that's a bit odd and have it held against them. For example; what's with the confusing name structure? Why have they released an unstable device that can use a stylus? They're pretty valid criticisms. Would you be happier if people just didn't mention the bad things?

Nice device. Might consider one for my daughter heading off to college this fall. She keeps wanting to steal my 12.9" iPad Pro so she can play with the Pencil.

I still prefer my 12.9" device and higher resolution screen. The bigger model got a 256GB option (it's up on the Apple Store currently) though I probably still would have bought the 128GB has it been an option back in November. I still have around 40GB free.
Me too. I now hate working on the small screen of my iPad Air 2.

And since my iPP has 90 GB free, I seem to be OK with storage. Probably because I'm always in the Clouds.

I'm really happy for those who want a smaller Pro. But I'm not one of them.

For people like you they lowered the iPad Air 2 in price. Very solid model.
I'll upgrade to a model of the new pro. Simple.

Please tell me why the 9.7 supports hey Siri when the 12.9 inch with the same m9 doesn't. I think this atrocious slighting of owners of the iPad Pro 12.9 which cost more a mere 4 months ago is u ethical. I can live with the lack of advanced late or the new fancy pants display. But this software restricted feature.... It's just wrong. Does anyone knows what's up with this nonsense?

A fairly impressive spec, but after almost two years, and a price bump, I can't see iPad sales recovering, or stabilising anytime soon.

VAT?

The US price includes VAT, right? You pay $599 VAT included? In Europe the advertised price has the VAT included.

$599?

The people I know that tried to use an iPad as a laptop replacement actually had higher stress levels due to the lack of a mouse, limited software, and lack of a file system. In the end, they all decided that for very basic things, it could do in a pinch but was nowhere near ready to be a laptop replacement at this time.
It's spring! And time to enlarge your circle of acquaintances.

Is there any plans for Apple to support hey Siri? Can anyone get in touch with Apple about this.

I don't know what to think about Apple any more. I own an iPad Air 2 128 gb wi-fi only. In Canada, yesterday, that iPad would have cost me $749 (in the education store). Today, I can no longer buy a 128 GB Air 2. The most I can get in an Air 2 is 64Gb at $589. I guess that's not a bad price, given that yesterday, that model was $639. BUT, if I'm in the market for a new 9.7 iPad, and I want 128Gb, I have to a buy a 9.7 Pro at $979! So that's $390 (plus tax) more I have to spend if I want a 128Gb 9.7 inch iPad. Even with the additions to the "Pro," that seems crazy to me. I'll be sticking with my Air 2 for quite some time (assuming it keeps working). Apple just made the decision not to upgrade very easy!

Oh, and no matter what Schiller says, this device can't be a laptop replacement. I was reminded of that yesterday when I was using Word on my laptop and could actually have (gasp!) two word documents open at the same time. Can't even do that on an iPad "Pro."

and this changes nothing - just a re-branded (updated) iPad air... nothing "Pro" about this thing.

No idea why anyone would introduce another platform into a workflow just to draw comps - specially when you have an option where you can do it in the same environment you will do the actual final design in.

If the $600 starting price included the pencil and keyboard, that'd be worth it, but it's so expensive with the add-ons, not to mention 32 GB isn't very much. I want one, but I probably won't be getting one any time soon.

The majority of iPad users do not need the Pencil or the keyboard. That's who Apple is targeting. For those that are graphic artists, such as my wife who has the iPad Pro, the Pencil at $100 is a bargain and a great piece of technology. People who need these "add-ons" simply pay more. Those who don't, pay less.
