Can someone explain why they still bother with two models of this? What is the benefit of the extra 32 GB of storage? Games? if so, 64 GB is still woefully inadequate. If they wanted a legit game system they should have the second model be a 32 GB + 1 TB SSHD for 100-150 more and bundle it with a controller.

They should've dropped the 1080p model to $99, and introduced the 4K model at $149. But no, Tim had to be greedy again. I guess becoming urban planners, with their town squares, has a lot of overhead. Meanwhile, a 4K Roku is $60. Ridiculous.
And the Roku's OS looks EXACTLY like it should cost $60.

And from what I've heard (no pun), the voice capabilities of Roku are a sad, sad joke.

Do you need a 4ktv to use this new Apple TV?
No.

Those are all owned by Disney (except 4), and Disney was not included in the presentation.

Not only that, none of the films are available in UHD.
I thought that the deal was, "all movies bought in HD would be upgraded to UHD."

You'd think with Lorraine Jobs owning a large chunk of DIS, that would be a given, however, when watching the keynote, I was distracted.

I much prefer the Roku to my Apple TV. My roku is in my main TV and my Apple TV regulated to my guest room. Now that Apple finally graced us with 4k MAYBE i'll give it a shot as my main TV, but I'm not holding out hope. There is nothing to cheer about for the Apple TV UI, IMO it's the worst of all set top boxes well below FireTV, Roku and AndroidTV.

Such as?

It does support FLAC now, BTW.

Here's what it supports as far as audio formats:

HE-AAC (V1), AAC (up to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV; AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) and E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound)

Of course, you can run InFuse or Plex and get a LOT more formats, I think.

Many users including myself want passthrough (bitstreaming) of HD audio codecs. This is what's on blu ray discs - DTS-HD, DTS-HD MA, Dolby TrueHD. Also you need bitstreaming for Atmos as well which can be included with a dolby digital plus stream or Dolby TrueHD. For those of us with good sound systems this is very important. My blu-ray collection is ripped and played through plex but plex on the ATV is limited to plain old dolby digital which is decades old.

Does it have optical audio, or do I have to buy a new receiver too?
Also, Dolby Vision??
I didn't see an Optical out; but something like this will take care of that need for $20.

Apple TV's UI worse than Roku's. That's a genuine laugh!

Every single review of Roku complains about their UI, and every single review of the Apple TV praises the UI.

this is the best, most consumer friendly announcement Apple has made in YEARS and people are still whining. Probably the same people who hate 4k and just complaining just to complain.

Many people live to complain

If I'm spending $200 on a streaming box, I'm going to buy the best one available - the NVIDIA Shield.

Seriously, I've been hoping that this would bring me back to the aTV because I miss airplay and the other benefits of the Apple ecosystem. But this device is lacking in comparison to the Shield at the same price point. Sure the Shield has less onboard storage, but it also has two USB 3.0 ports if I want to attach HDDs or flash drives. More importantly, it will direct play anything I throw at it from my Plex Server.

Sure is... I absolutely hate the remote (which is part of the UI, it's literally how the user ... interfaces to the device). You can't seem to pick up the remote during playback without skipping forward, back, pausing or something else you didn't want to happen because you brushed against the trackpad. That alone makes me want to toss the remote in the trash, dumbest idea ever. Put remote on the armrest, then brush against it and woops... just jumped 5 minutes forward, now scramble to figure out how to get back to where you were. F that remote.

Anyone know when can we expect to purchase 4K movies and how are we going to be notified if an eligible movie was updated?

Live sports is the new feature for me that might get me to buy. If i can get ESPN and Big 10 network at 4k I would buy this.

I don't have a 4K TV set so this ATV update is irrelevant for me. I wished they have other updates under the hood to justify people like me to upgrade.
One thing would be to be able play your media library on a external drive or NAS. Having to turn your Mac on to watch my personal library is infuriating.
Use the ATV InFuse or Plex Apps.

It doesn't directly say it supports HDR10 or Dolby Vision, so I guess I would have to read through the 168 answered questions or buy one to find out lol but thanks. I still say apple should have included the $5 optical port.

***Edit: someone said no HDCP 2.2, so I'm gonna assume it doesn't support the new apple tv
I bet they found that some vanishinly-small number of people were still using TOSLink, or had other devices that covered that functionality.

Personally, my HDMI Switch also does audio extraction to TOSLink; so I just use the TOSLink from that.

Yeah, I expected they would do exactly that. 1080p at $99. 4K at $150.

But nope. Guess they're fine having the very limited market share they do in this category.

Does not need optical audio; you just add a HDMI to RCA converter (many on Amazon) and plug the RCAs (stereo) to your receiver or amplified speakers.
