"Folding" phones are a forced meme (and an unpopular one at that), and I wonder if any of their manufacturers are making money on these ungainly and ugly things...

If they weren’t they wouldn’t have been around as long as they have been at this point.

I like the concept of this phone and the execution of the software seems on point. I am not really sure why I would get one if I were shopping for a new iPhone today. The Pro models seemingly offer the better hardware at a lower price, so it is purely about the screen size. 80% over Pro and 50% over Pro Max, though I wonder who thinks a Pro Max is too small. Beyond these reasonable thoughts, it has the wow factor - for an iPhone. I've seen foldables in the wild for years so that wow factor has lost some edge. I am curious what the market share will be in five years, compared to other iPhone models. Surely it will stay niche, but I bet it will sell just fine for Apple. At least you can't say Apple doesn't have a foldable anymore, that's something.

Yeah, I mean I picked up a Pro Max in the Apple Store and it's huge, I can't see why you'd need it to be much bigger than that?

The entire product demo shows just how little a folding phone offers. Video while texting someone. Comparing websites (lol). Some multitasking features. There is just so little it adds and all of it pretty much done better with a tablet.

I don't fully agree, I think it is a use case scenario. I can see how it would be quite useful for me when I want analyse and compare data when I'm out on a job or with a client. There are plenty of cases where having split screen with two apps comes handy. I think it's a great option for those who can make use of it and I'm not carrying around iPad everywhere just in case I might need it but the phone is always with me.

After taxes here in Canada in Ontario it's $4405.... 2TB is nearly $5500 after taxes.... yeah prices are crazy outside of the US.

Wow they nailed it! My only 2 wishes that didn’t come true was bringing the variable aperture from the 18 pro and getting a September release. All in all, fantastic foldable phone that really raises the bar for foldables.

I am surprised Apple went with the "Duo" name. Microsoft's Surface Duo "foldable phone" didn't do well but hopefully Apple's iPhone Duo will fare much better.

These do seem to be iPhone Apps though, not iPad Apps, if that matters for your use cases on split screen stuff and replacing your iPad.

Hmm it is a very nice device, but, I am not sure it is worth it? It is a bit wider then a Max phone with a case on, and weighs 254 grams so heavier too. This is one to see in person I think. But lately for some reason I've been more interested in what the iPhone Air 2 will be like. Guess it comes back to that age old like the Pro camera but dislike its weight.

Tell me you’re running out of ideas without telling me you’re running out of ideas. Apple definitely peaked in 2020.

The regression to Touch ID is such a step down. Face IDs speed and seamless integration and greatly improved security is a real loss.

People are INSANELY hyping these foldable phones. I don’t see the value proposition in them and it showed in the demo. Sorry I would rather use an iPad to do these things.

It will sell well. One audience consists of people with an iPhone and iPad mini. It can replace both at around the same price. It looks more comfortable to hold when open than an iPad mini and has a much better display (though the next iPad mini may get OLED).

That's 113g more than my 13 Mini.
Even if I wanted this for the folded size, the weight is beyond a non starter.

I get the sales tax through my business back, so it’d be €2.5k for 1tb, my business is doing just fine so it’s not a cash thing, it’s a reality thing. I might just get the commodore phone 😂

Definitely not for me but it's a really cool device, they presented it well. My wife wants one so I guess I'll get to check it out at some point. I just can't see me getting real world benefit out of it.

My wife, who never cared about a gadget in her life, just texted me to ask if it comes out before her birthday (ouch!). I think this may have broader appeal to non-techies than we might think…

I was expecting $2199 usd for the 512 which converts to $3200 Canadian using their current 1.45 exchange rate. Guess they raised the exchange rate to 1.5 lmao.

$3,299 for the 512gb version is wild.

I already switched to a fold 8 last week assuming this pricing. I'll keep the $800 savings in my pocket.

Its a lot better than i thought it would be. I wish the inner bezels were as thin as the outside ones. Its still too pricey but thats foldables in general.

Its more accessible if you trade a recent iPhone in.
