Apple Announces iOS 10 With Overhauled Messages App, Rich Notifications, and More

Then there are apps like iMessage that blow away the competition. And it all works seamlessly with our Macs. Can Android do that, even with Chromebook or Windows?

Apparently you haven't used Android, Chromebooks or Windows anytime lately, because yes, a lot of those things that were mentioned in today's keynote are already available on such devices. For example:
  • Since Lollipop (5.0), Android has a feature called Smart Lock, where your phone can be automatically unlocked if it is near a certain location or Bluetooth device. Chromebooks can be unlocked automatically using the same tech if your phone is near.
  • Using an app like Pushbullet or AirDroid, I can send and receive texts from Windows or a Chromebook. The upcoming Anniversary update for Windows will allow for Android notification mirroring and replying to text messages natively.
  • Google Photos has done everything Apple's upcoming Photos app will do for quite a while now.
  • Google's upcoming Allo app was announced prior to today's WWDC, and will do many of the same things as Apple's new messaging app (Shouting, whispering, stickers, smart replies, etc.)
And I could go on and on. More or less, the idea that Apple has this "seamless" ecosystem that no one else has is outdated, and anyone who believes otherwise needs to get their head out of the sand.

Never thought I see the day where apple is trying to play catch up with Android and Google services . They use to be the one to emulate and now they are the emulators. Literally every new feature they mentioned I already have on my galaxy s7 edge.

I can't even imagine what kind of Android features they'll add to iphone 7. Maybe we'll finally get a notification light lol.

But I still have to give it up to iMessages. It's still a gorgeous and simple messaging app go use. And they are making it even better with ios 10.

I don't know why people are complaining about the new lock screen notification. It looks gorgeous. I think someone of you just have issues with change so anything new you just call ugly.

RIP to iPhone 4s owners.

Oh god, what have they done to the messages app?!

It's bad enough that they introduced that stupid microphone/voice thing that no one uses, now it's loaded with all the same cartoony crap that was in MSN Messenger back in 2002. It looks childish and tacky. Hoping it can all be turned off.

I'm liking the new notifications, widgets, Today view and the simple professional design that they have. Hoping that design language spreads to the other parts of iOS that were ruined in iOS7. Hopefully they are starting to realise people don't want super bright childish designs (someone should tell the team that worked on Messages).

Not sold on the new Music app design. I need to see the "Up Next" screen and use it a bit before I judge. I can't be worse than the current one...can it?

Overall, I think iOS10 looks pretty lacklustre. iOS is becoming a bloated mess, it's starting to seem over complicated and has inconsistent design.

Some cool new features which I'll like using on my iPhone. Nothing that will make me regret selling my iPad and getting a surface 3.

Going to have to see how it runs on the iPhone 5, otherwise mine will probably stay on 9.1 where it's been flawless.

Guess I'm just getting old, but the message updates are garbage. Must be a millennial thing. I don't care about stupid effects on my messages. Now i just have to worry about receiving that crap from someone, I'm certainly not gonna be sending it out.

No dark mode for iOS. This makes me sad.

the only thing i wanted, figures.

I think one of my favorite new features is one of the most simple: Raise to wake. It drives me crazy when my iPhone 6s unlocks so quickly that I miss my notifications. Even after all this time I don't remember to use the side button and end up missing them. This subverts that by showing them before I even press my finger down when I pick it up.
But doesn't this mean that the phone is "more active" how does it differentiate between being picked up and you standing up whilst it's in your pocket. Also the gyros will be on whilst the phone is in standby. It makes far more sense if the notifications are displayed when you unlock the phone, not trying to remember what they all were, some are obvious, some are quite hidden (inconsistent too).

One of the features I really miss from my Blackberry is the notification LED...

The shared clipboard and voicemail dictation features were my favourite features. Was really hoping they would port iMessage to Android, as I was hoping they would later expand it to porting to the Windows platform

I actually like the notifications and how 3D touch is added into it..

overall it's a good update..is it amazing? no but hardly bad.

Really? People have been saying Apple is playing "catchup" for *years*, conveniently ignoring any features Apple introduces first, and complaining about features Apple introduces second, even if they should be happy a useful feature is coming to iOS regardless.

TV OS Only. iOS has Night Shift. Dark mode must consume an additional .0004 mA. Big Brother once again. :apple:

Yup. No Night Shift mode = Apple spying on you. Big Brother, right?
