Guess I'm just getting old, but the message updates are garbage. Must be a millennial thing. I don't care about stupid effects on my messages. Now i just have to worry about receiving that crap from someone, I'm certainly not gonna be sending it out.

the only thing i wanted, figures.
Same here. Didn't really care about the iMessage part. Guess we are both officially old now.

Did Apple bring up the voicemail transcription for iOS? That's surprising. Like you, I'm also hard of hearing myself but rely on unlimited data and text for my iPhone 6 Plus without any voice plan. But when the time comes for me to use a voice plan again in the future, then the voicemail transcription would be a godsend for people trying to reach me.

I didn't watch the keynote today due to a meeting, however.

There are both young and old that would use those features (and use them in various other messengers), and both young and old that won't and don't use them.

But doesn't this mean that the phone is "more active" how does it differentiate between being picked up and you standing up whilst it's in your pocket. Also the gyros will be on whilst the phone is in standby. It makes far more sense if the notifications are displayed when you unlock the phone, not trying to remember what they all were, some are obvious, some are quite hidden (inconsistent too).

no no no. It works exactly as on the apple watch and is very energy efficient thanks to the dedicated motion coprocessors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_motion_coprocessors , A5-class iDevices and up)

M-series sole job is to acquire the Inertial Measurment Unit (accelero + gyro + magneto — & microphone for always on "hey siri" on A9-class iDevices) and trigger main SoC (A-series) wake.

As someone who has actually used iOS 10, I think this is a really cool update. More exciting than iOS 9 for sure. Loving the new lock screen features. And the beta is surprisingly stable compared to years passed, zero issues so far.

As always, it's the smaller enchantments that appeal to me more. Think there was one part about shared notes app? Will be awesome for quickly creating shared checklists.

I re
I'd say this has the potential to be big:

https://www.macrumors.com/2016/06/13/apple-siri-api-third-party-developers/

But I definitely hope it gets better. For me, it just needs to be better on recognizing what I am saying (you know, the basics ;) )

I really hope third party developers help it out, but I find the basics of siri are still horrid. So many people have posted videos, posted experiences of how Siri doesn't understand them. And yes some people will say it understands them perfectly.. but for me I stopped using it as it just sucks at voice recognition. YET I RARELY have a problem with google now, which leads me to the conclusion that Siri is the problem.

I honestly am tired of a witty response to something I completely didn't ask. The novelty has worn off.. Tim is a goof and it shows on what Apple has become.

Wow, so anyone who bought an iPad Pro thinking, "They'll fix all the shortcomings with iOS 10"......looks like you're SOL!!! Buy hey - you'll finally be able to have side-by-side Safari windows. That's something, right?? :/
I bought an iPad Pro for Apple Pencil support, not for iOS 10

No hyperbole here but Apple needs to stop trying to humanize computers. No. Just no. You're embarrassing yourself, Apple. One reason why Android is a masterpiece is that it's very sterile. No gimmicks or flash. Just straight forward features. We don't need stupid Digital Touch. Just stop it. I don't need to see sketches from my friend and family. I don't need to feel my girlfriend's stupid heartbeat. I don't "emotive" text messages. I don't need my smartphone to be "fun." What I need is all-day battery life. I need widgets that tell me the current weather.
Your world sounds kind of boring. You can do this in iOS 10, now people can just be frilly if they choose.

Basically copying things android has had for a long time.
And... Apple's copy isn't very good.

Make NO Mistake, I sat in the audience today hoping for the best. A hardcore Apple enthusiast/shareholder since 1991, I had no expectations, just an open mind as I watched what Apple had in store for this WWDC.

Currently my primary smartphone is a stellar Nexus 6P, my iPhone 6S Plus serves as a secondary phone. I had thought perhaps Apple would act on its intelligence gathering and bring iOS 10 into parody with Android 6.x.x, but it was not to be.

Gimmicks galore and emojis for the easily amused.

It isn't just a millennial thing, it's also a female thing. Didn't you hear the way they talked about the emotions of it all. This is just the continued feminisation of all things in the west... for good or bad, probably more bad than good from my POV, but I ain't the one spending all the money. As long as I can switch it off I'll be fine.

And then right at the end we learnt the main reason... the monetisation of iMessage. They've seen how insanely popular LINE and other messaging apps have been with selling pointless crap for kids to send to each other.

I'm already dreading some of the crap I will Recieve from iMessage . At least in the past this was limited to apps like snapchat etc, now iMessages have become the teenagers dream. I'd be fine if there was a way to turn this off, but sadly like it or not, the sender is in control....

It's that, and also catering to the Asian markert. While I have seen moderate unsage of such behaviour in the west, it's crazy popular in places like China / Japan and was a long time even before smartphones were a reality. The Asian female is going to love iOS 10.

Having lived in Japan for 3 years, it was an interesting time , and I can see why apple is doing it.

It's were apple sees the money being, so logically it's catering for its users , you can see how many times they referenced Chinese elements in the presentation.

lock screen was very ugly. I also hated the stickers. Everything else looks great though. What will replace game center though?

It's simply everyone is different type of thing. Some people like the color red and others like the color blue and yet others like other colors. People can try hard to attribute age, gender, whatnot to all kinds of things they feel like, often overlooking the much simpler (although perhaps somehow harder to even comprehend, let alone accept for some) reality is that everyone is different and it doesn't have to be tied to anything aside from people simply being people and not one single being.

It's tied to sales, which is tied to a demographic. Markerting 101.

Sure, with that demographic being iOS/Apple consumers (who are made up of all kinds of ages, genders, races, ethnicities, etc., etc., etc.).

some things are ok, copy and paste would be great if it would work. I can see useful use of force touch, but 95% of people do not use this stuff. I know people who have iphones and they did not know anything about icloud and other features. I really do not like messages, it is childish almost like a skype sending crappy videos. I hope there will be feature to switch that stuff off.

Exactly. LINE... It's been insanely popular in Japan and has made the company money like they couldn't believe.

and as apple pay is not coming fully to Europe, there is no need to upgrade either. I will not even participate in betas as I did in the past.

While we might not agree, I see apple targeting China heavily . Having lived in Japan three years , the Chinese female is going to go crazy for the iMessage features.

Look. In the whole of WWDC , not a single pro feature was announced. It was all for consumers. I don't remember a WWDC like that. There was nothing for the professional consumer....

Straight away when they announced it, I thought back to the purikura photo booths, and knew exactly what they were targeting, and why it's a huge money spinner in Asia. This single feature will make them more sales then anything else announced.

You have to spend sometime in Asia to understand this phenomenon

Never thought I see the day where apple is trying to play catch up with Android and Google services . They use to be the one to emulate and now they are the emulators. Literally every new feature they mentioned I already have on my galaxy s7 edge.

I can't even imagine what kind of Android features they'll add to iphone 7. Maybe we'll finally get a notification light lol.

But I still have to give it up to iMessages. It's still a gorgeous and simple messaging app go use. And they are making it even better with ios 10.

I don't know why people are complaining about the new lock screen notification. It looks gorgeous. I think someone of you just have issues with change so anything new you just call ugly.

RIP to iPhone 4s owners.

Notification light via the LED flash is already part of iOS.

The rumours persisted about iMessage on Android but I wouldn't rule it out despite not being mentioned at WWDC. It is after all the APPLE developer conference. An iMessage app would be created by Apple and deployed direct onto the Google Play Store. What Apple want is to wean people off WhatsApp and LINE sticking with the stock app and then BAM launch onto Android to kill them off for good... or at least devolve them to add-ons.

The experience of iMessage on iPhone will always be superior even if it was cross platform because it's baked into iOS itself. Having iMessage on Android is not a deal breaker for me to switch platforms.
