Looking at the comparison between the 16 Pro max and 17 pro max I am not sure actually it's that much of an upgrade. You are paying for a new design and bigger battery with some efficiencies...

Apple today introduced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Both devices feature a new aluminum unibody design, with the Ceramic Shield now protecting both the front and back sides. Apple says the front side is now Ceramic Shield 2, which offers 3x better scratch resistance, while the rear Ceramic Shield is advertised as 4x more resistant to cracks compared to the back glass on previous iPhone models.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively, with a higher 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness and 2x better outdoor contrast.

A larger rear camera plateau houses three 48-megapixel Fusion cameras, and the antenna system now wraps around it. The upgraded Telephoto camera offers up to 8x optical zoom, which is up from the 5x limit on the iPhone 16 Pro models. Plus, there is now an 18-megapixel front camera with Center Stage support.

The optical zoom options available include 4x at 100mm, and 8x at 200mm. The camera system supports ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and genlock for multi-camera video syncing.

Other key features for these devices include an A19 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU for up to 40% faster sustained performance compared to iPhone 16 Pro models, a larger battery, a vapor chamber cooling system for improved thermal management, and an Apple-designed N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

New color options include Silver, Deep Blue, and Cosmic Orange.

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are eSIM-only in Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the U.S., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to Apple. These models are equipped with an even larger battery that fills the space formerly occupied by the physical SIM card tray.

Apple says the iPhone 17 Pro Max offers the longest battery life of any iPhone model ever, with up to 39 hours of video playback per full charge.

In the U.S., the iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 with 256GB of storage, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 with 256GB of storage. Pre-orders start Friday, September 12, ahead of deliveries to customers and in-store availability beginning Friday, September 19.

Both devices can be configured with an all-new 2TB storage capacity, which is an increase over the previous 1TB maximum.

There are new accessories, including a Crossbody Strap and TechWoven cases that are the spiritual successor to Apple's ill-received, discontinued FineWoven cases.

Apple also announced that iOS 26 will be released on Monday, September 15.

So, during the event Apple said, "last year iPhone users took over 5 billion selfies"...If apple doesn't use our personal data, how did they know this? Hmmmmm

I just did the same - no reason to upgrade a 16 Pro Max to a 17 Pro Max.

The more interesting decision is upgrading a 16 Pro Max (or 15 Pro Max) to something like the Air or even the 17 for significant weight and/or thinness savings, especially since all these phones have Pro Motion

Bro, I had my money on a Black 17 Pro Max 512 GB, where is the Black color, I have been using black iphone since X
Same! If I upgrade, would I buy a black dbrand skin JUST for that upper camera bump area. The rest of the phone would be in a case.

OR better yet maybe a black case that covers everything with of course the exception of the camera lenses, flash/Lidar. Something like this....

They seemed to ZIP THROUGH this keynote, I have to read the full specs on Apples site or elsewhere, *here perhaps soon. Maybe (who knows) it does have the ability??

But...reverse charge would be something that would have been mentioned. I would think???
Especially if it could charge your watch while on vacation or something. This would def be a selling feature. I feel like they've said the last few years that the pro models have had reverse charging capabilities "if turned on" but we still have yet to see it.

I am actually considering to replace my 13Pro with the 17 now that it has 120Hz.

Yeah the baseline iPhone is actually quite a decent phone now especially price Vs features. I might go this route. There’s stuff putting me off the Air now. No stereo speakers only e-sim support.

INFINITE COSMIC POWER!

(And no way of harnessing it)

Seriously love the update. A metal chassis is long overdue and the camera oblong will eliminate table wobble. I’d buy is for the 200mm lens and the orange colour alone.

But why no flex with the improved GPU, no big gaming exclusive to harness it all? F2P titles you can get on Android too are not the way to go.

If Apple can get Sony to bring the PSVR2 controllers to Vision Pro it’s not too much of a stretch to get out the company credit card and pay for a port of God of War or Horizon. They’re on PC so it’s not like Sony are precious about them.

Sadly no eSIM for Bly variant for Germany, but that was to be expected.
I’m travelling to Japan in October. If I would buy the eSIM only model there - would this phone work in Germany?

While the 17 Pro is getting many comments about it being an ugly / odd / weird design...I do think as people see more them in the wild & get used to them, that will die down.

I remember when the first "pro" version was released (11 Pro) people hated the camera bump...and now (even if one still isn't a fan) it seems fairly normal whenever you see an iPhone...same thing with the notch. Its not as big of a deal as when it was first revealed.

I can see that happening with the 17 Pro if its popular.

There's always an adjustment period with these more extreme designs...then as they become more common, people just accept it as it standard.

They didn’t make this e-sim only worldwide? And the rest of the world lost 2 hours battery life, for an empty hole?
Some Countries have laws requiring eSIM. Including China.
No open gate/square sensor on back camera?

No reverse wireless charging?

Nope I'm good.
I read elsewhere that reverse charging is available. Guess the truth will show up soon.
