Not enough £££'s in that idea for anyone at o2 to give a toss.

I've just remembered why I ditched them before. Only came back for the Jesus phone. Sadly, they'll be enough idiots paying these prices to make a few MR departures inconsequential.

There is only one group of people responsible for rip-off Britain and that is the UK consumer.

This is what narcs me...basically O2 aren't going to get a new sale from me cos of this stupid 18month contract renewal nonsense - simple as that...so it's gonna be another year before Apple get's another iphone sale now as I might as well wait until iPhone 4...

You know cheap Snow Leopard just about cancels this abomination out Apple-wise but O2 are just ludicrous

I'm not paying £500 for a video recording capability...

I paid full price for a 2G iPhone but am on a GoPhone contract, will I still get the same subsidized price as others with a 2G iPhone? 😕

A couple of people have asked this question, but no one has answered it yet.
My wife is eligible for the lowest upgrade price to replace her Moto Razr. I am not eligible to upgrade my 3G until 12/2009, and then probably at the 499 not 299 price. I paid 499 to replace my Blackberry when the 3G came out.
I would like to use my wife's upgrade to get the 3GS for me, pass the 3G on to her and swap the sim cards. Is this a possiblity?

I love the $18 "upgrade fee". It just shows what bloodsuckers they are. So AT&T is getting...what...thousands of dollars for locking you into a new contract, but they just have to add in that $18 fee on top of it? I don't know why that makes me angry, but it does. They will wring you for every penny and then stick out their hand for more, unbelievable. The sooner Apple dumps AT&T, the better for both them and consumers.

Mobile phone companies = scum.

I don't get how some people with Iphone 3G plans bought on Day 1 have an eligible upgrade on 7/22/2009. I was a day one iphone buyer for both the first one and 3g and it says I won't be eligible until 12/11/2009.

WTF?!!!

Same here - I get the December date as well as a full $699 price and I bought it day 1 last year. It makes no sense.

Standard iPhone Upgrade

Like many of you I bought the 3G in the first few days of the launch. The iPhone reservation page on the Apple's site says the following:

As a valued AT&T customer, AT&T can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 07/19/2009.

$299.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
$399.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
$499.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

What does the standard iPhone upgrade mean?

For $699 I'll buy a Dell Mini with 3G and use Skype.

I must not be a valued AT&T customer since I have the First Gen iPhone and have had it since the day it came out. Scum bags.

Apple really let me down today. Yeah, the new iPhone 3GS is faster and can record video, but c'mon, those aren't good selling points. Phones have been recording video for years now, and Apple is advertising this "new" feature as if they are the first to put video recording capabilities into a phone. If they really wanted to blow us out of the water, and steal the hype from the Pre, they should have made physical modifications to the phone to separate it more from the iPhone 3G. On the news tonight, when they come to the story about Apples new phone, no one is going to be excited when they hear "faster". The original 3G was the "faster" iPhone model, and this is going to appear to be nothing new to current iPhone users. Also, what's the point of releasing 3.0 on the 17th? Once again, if they really wanted to blow us away today, it should have been released today. Perhaps that just me being bitter because I am leaving for the summer and won't be able to get the update before I go, but when it comes down to it, Apple really hyped us up for nothing. iPhone 3GS is going to sell just as well as the other iPhones, no doubt, but coming from someone like me who still sometimes regrets leaving Verizon to get a 3G would have liked to see something bigger this time around. If the GM version of 3.0 is being seeded to developers today, it should be released to all of us today. Apple is so worried about our excitement and anticipation that they forget about the let down factor. 3.0 is clearly done, and releasing it on the 17th makes no sense to me. ATT, a leading mobile phone company should have MMS available, and tethering for that matter, ASAP. That was very surprising to me when I heard that.

Apple needs to stop jumping into new products and leaving defective products in the dust. Why does my iPhone 3G constantly freeze up? Why is restarting my phone a daily recurrence? It would be nice to see these issues addressed instead of more laptop releases three months after new ones are announced. Apple doesn't have its priorities in order, whatsoever.

Your kidding right? I know many people who are exicted about "Faster". I think you miss the point about FASTER when you talk about the 3G being the FASTER model. The new phone has a faster processor and will load things much faster. FASTER comes in many forms - not just network speed (which will be faster assuming the carrier can support it). This new hardware will open up possibilities for Apps that were not possible before. And when Apple says that Video is "new" (assuming they even said that) they mean NEW to the iPhone - not to phones overall. Do you really think they are going to say they have "added video like other phones have had for a long time"? No company would market their product that way. The reason they gave for releasing 3.0 on 6/17 was so that developers could get the GM version today and check their apps in the final version. I for one am good with that because I would rather wait instead of having apps break. We've waited this long, what's another 10 days? As for the Pre, Apple DID steal the hype today. Period. Your comment about Apple hyping us is confusing. What did Apple say would be released that was not released??? People on these RUMOR sites hyped the iPhone. As far as I can tell Apple delivered everything they eluded to and then some. If anyone is disappointed that they did not get something they read about on a rumors site, it's their fault for not managing their expectations. I do agree with you that AT&T needs to get it together on MMS and tethering. As for your phone, who knows why it is doing what it's doing. You should take that up with Apple but don't slam them for releasing new Mac updates. Thats the business they are in. They sell computers. It's good that they updated them and dropped the price on some. How is that a bad thing?

Where the heck have you been?

The image is a modified photo. See the iPhone 3G[Stop Gap] as opposed to 3G. He is saying that this is a filler phone for Apple to get out the door to combat the Palm Pre until the front-camera, matte-finish, etc. version can get announced up the return of SJ.

Don't want to go too far off topic but I'm not holding my breath on the SL discount either. Firstly, Apple's special US to UK price conversion and secondly, I can't see any small print relating to what they define as a 'Leopard user'.

Horrible feeling it'll be someone who paid full whack for Leopard rather than some who got it with a £1500 Mac.

You are only eligible for the subsidized price if you sign a new 2-year contract.

well that giant 747 just went straight over your head... check the picture you might catch up 😉😀
Look at the photo he attached....
... look more closely at the attached image.

Ahhh, that's what I get for not paying attention.

<eats crow>

Very funny!!

Damn, not the upgrade I was looking for. Still using the same tacky glossy with chrome look. Plus, no OLED display??😕

How does your contract end in 2010. I bought an iphone 3G the day it came out, when only new account/add-a-line customers were the only ones able to buy. Mine ends on 7/11/210 exactly 2 years after i bought it so i am still very confused at how brand new iphone 3G buyers have their contracts ending before 2 years and are able to upgrade before 18 months into their current "2-year contract"

uh, anyone could buy the 3G that had the 2G.

Boxybrown - do you know why some people are eligible for a "standard upgrade" on 07/15 that bought the 3G in the first week but others (like me) are not eligible for the standard upgrade until 12/15?

A couple of people have asked this question, but no one has answered it yet.

Someone said they were able to use their mother's upgrade for their phone. Call AT&T to confirm if this is a possibility for your iPhone / wife's RAZR.

This would be a feasible option (pay the "early termination fee" and then just buy the phone as a "new customer") if you could keep your existing wireless number. But as far as I know, you can't do that if you are going from AT&T to AT&T. If you were terminating to go to Verizon, they could "port" your number for you, but AT&T won't "port" the number from itself.

What blows is that they don't let you "early upgrade" at the subsidized price + $5 per month of service you have left on your original contract or something (similar to the way the early termination fee is calculated... the less time you have left on your contract, the less ETF you have to pay).

Early termination will cost you any sort of "valued" customer status and/or any old plans you have. I have a 600 minute plan that works fine for me and it's cheaper than what they're offering now.

Cross-grade

My wife has a 1G and I have a 3G phone. I've put in a reservation to upgrade my wife's phone, and according to an Apple tech support rep I just spoke to, I can swap the SIM cards and the net result will be that my wife will "upgrade" to my 3G and I will "upgrade" to the 3GS.

Its funny you say that as someone who clearly has never had another cellular carrier. I have worked for Verizon, sprint and now ATT and ALL OF THEM HAVE AN UPGRADE FEE!!

AYYYY al least somebody understood it thank you

Wait a few months. The version you were waiting for will be released in a manner that will piss off everyone that is buying this version. 😀
