You weren't "nice enough" to be a day 1 upgrader, you WANTED to be a day 1 upgrader. You waited in line with all the other crazy people for a PHONE. And now your heart is broken again and yet you keep coming back to your abusive husband, Apple.

Like many of you I bought the 3G in the first few days of the launch. The iPhone reservation page on the Apple's site says the following:

As a valued AT&T customer, AT&T can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 07/19/2009.

$299.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
$399.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
$499.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

What does the the standard iPhone upgrade mean?

Did you buy it at the fully subsidized price or a higher price?

Basically instead of buying this new iphone as an upgrade from o2 they are forcing me to the wait until the end of the stupid 18 month contract--but at that point I may as well cancel my contract and wait another 6 months until the next iphone comes out and start again...cos I'm not gonna do a rolling upgrade in January...

Indeed.. you'd be stupid to, as you'd be only 6 months into an 18 month contract when the next phone came out and be in exactly the same situation, only worse.

Best thing seems to be to sit this one out and see what apple (or others) come up with next year.

Ahhh, that's what I get for not paying attention.

<eats crow>

Very funny!!

I didn't click the image here, either.

Anyone else remember when macrumors was the main site from which a virus or trojan horse or something shot through the community when someone posted a fake picture here? I don't remember the details, but remember well enough to be wary of photos posted here.

What we see here is a classic Stop Gap tactic... Apple needed something to combat the Palm Pre and quickly... so they released this half arsed effort of a phone... its not deserved of the Apple logo on the back of it. 😡

uh, anyone could buy the 3G that had the 2G.

Boxybrown - do you know why some people are eligible for a "standard upgrade" on 07/15 that bought the 3G in the first week but others (like me) are not eligible for the standard upgrade until 12/15?

Honestly, if your getting it from the website, its probably wrong. The computer cant analyze your plan and tell you that you SHOULD be, just what it can see. It could just be a bug, but if you went to an att store, they will most likely give you the proper pricing.

I am starting to think...for me the 32GB will be $500...I can sell my current 3G on eBay for well over $500...cant I?

The number of idiots on here that don't know what a subsidy is, is astounding. My God, what morons. As for me however, this will be my first iPhone. Roll on June 19th. Perfect timing too because I'm leaving on the 20th for a week long trip. Woo! 😀😎

I was very excited about the new IPhones. Spent a good part of the morning reading the blogs. I just read about the upgrade costs for existing 3G owners. I'm no longer excited. Does it really take AT&T two years to recoup their investment?

I think it's too bad that AT&T is tarnishing a new product release for so many faithful users. I was ready to buy the 3Gs, but I can't justify $399- for the 16gig model. I'm not sure that I'll upgrade even when eligible as I don't this this upgrade was handled well.

I don't know how the people before me are able to upgrade in July of this year. I stood in line for the iphone 3G and got it that day. I just went through apple's website and it's going to cost $500 for me. It also states "You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 03/12/2010." Please tell me how some people are getting different answers for the same question.

I got mine on day 1 also and on att's site I get the same as you - 3/12/2010

And people said that for the first iPhone and the 3G. Now this one. I see a pattern here.

I've pre-ordered my 32GB.

But, why did people EVER think that AT&T owners were going to offer the new iPhone subsidized? We already got our subsidized price. As with ANY phone on ANY network, you only get one subsidized price per 2 years (if you sign a 2 yr contract).

Maybe the fact that we've also eaten a $10/month increase in data fees.

So it seems that the story so far is that nobody has any idea whatsoever what the real pricing terms are, not even AT&T.

Fantastic.

I was excited to see that you didn't have to go to an AT&T store and activate your phone before you leave like last year. But this is entirely countered by the confusing explanation-free pricing pages we are being presented. This is compounded by people who are reporting various pricing scenarios that conflict with one another.

This is all AT&T's fault, I guarantee it. This is exactly the type of insane shenanigans that these mobile carriers in the US perform to confuse people into paying way more money that is fair.

All that ranting aside, can someone confirm that they 1) Bought the 2G iPhone at "some point" and 2) Bought the 3G iPhone on launch day and 3) Are being offered the opportunity to buy the 3G S at the fully subsidized price within the next month?

This is basically my scenario and it is not what I'm being offered, however, I do have a family plan that I set up later down the road, so I am trying to figure out if the nonsense presented to me in the ordering system is the result of the system incorrectly using the terms of the second line.

Well I'm debating wether I want to upgrade or not, unfortunately the whole business aspect of it makes it a decision different than say buying a car.
We need to discuss it.

I realize all cell phone carriers work this way, although Sprint will give you special pricing. but thats just another thing wrong with this country.

0 in the way of innovation.

I guess I have a week to decide. A question, if we go with the higher price can we still buy at the apple store or do we need to go to att direct.

Many unanswered questions.
And the last thing we need is someone calling us a bunch of retards because we don't agree with how things are handled.

show me one phone on the market that is possibly part of the livelyhood of the owner to keep up todate, show me one phone were the company producing it is dependent on apps from x number of developers to keep it viable in a market getting crowder.
I totally agree.
After discussing with my wife. Since for some reason she can use 7/12/09 (This is my 3G info from last year and mind you , she has never owned an iphone at all) to upgrade for the 199/299 and do hers now
mine will be 599/699 IF I try to upgrade/update before 12/12/09, but im really thinking about selling my 3G on ebay as I sold my 1st gen last year and made out more than really well. 16GB being sold international in mint condition (Mine was replaced April with a new one)with a warranty are selling internationally between 600-700.
So we will see what I can come up with.
They are forcing/breaking small time devs arms with this pricing.
Am I complaining about "just upgrading" the hardware.....?
Yes. If I was not a Dev and my family (Meaning myself and my wife-She has been brushing up on code and all!lol)trying to develop applications and no this isn't a flyby random Apple Zombie Hardware fiend crying about a general upgrade....
This is someone whom would like if I seen fit to do so to take advantage of the new features to build applications around the new hardware that is not within the 3G.

Good Marketing on Apple? To a point....
In order to get mms- 1st gen has to upgrade to the 3G
In order to use the video recording- Both previous Gens have to upgrade.....(

See response #400.

What if you have an iphone on your family plan, obviously you can't upgrade, but someone else on the plan can upgrade, can you upgrade THAT phone and use it in place of your 3G without having to buy 2 media plans. That's my fear, i want to upgrade my other phone but in doing so would i have to make it so it has the media plan and my iphone 3g has it as well, or will it just override it because im just using my old phone s an upgrade tool? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Also, is video recording part of OS 3.0 or iPhone 3GS?

Just make sure you get the June 19th delivery option or you'll get it while you are gone. 😉
