Apple announces iPod nano

And do you think there will be a Car Radio FM Transmitter for it??

Need this question and the question above answered before ordering! LOL ;)

gorgeous lil doodad.

based on many reactions here, and from some school chums, I gather black is the new white.

I also hope black is reintroduced to the powerbook line... black (metal) powermacs might be nifty also.

edit: that said, I would willingly join Apple to the dark side. =)

Anyone know if it will probably work with USB 1.1? It says 2.0 recommended on the tech specs page, but 2.0 required on the apple store page. However, I just got off the phone with apple, and the guy said he had never heard of a Mac(which I have) not work with an iPod with USB 1.1. Any thoughts?

It should work just fine as USB 2.0 is hardware update that increases transfer speeds that is *supposed* to be 100% backwards-compatible with USB 1.1 devices. I would give it a try, and if not you can always bring it back right? I would be upper-nineties percent sure that it would work though, I say go for it.

efoto...I already did order it-BEFORE I realized about 2.0/1.1 :)

Thanks for the words of encouragement...and your pic is nice.

Go with white nano... black looks great when it's clean and unmarked, but the instant you get scratches or fingerprints on it, it looks like crap. White hides such blemishes much more effectively.

(Trust me on this... I used to own a black Audi TT. Now I own a SILVER Audi TT. I'll never buy another black car again.)

I know what you mean 100%. I was leaning towards the white one cuz of the whole scratch on black thing sucks but black looks nice. I will never buy a black car because of this reason too, swirlmarks, scratches, they get dirty so quick. Im sticking with white cars, white is so clean. I added the white one to my cart before this post but didnt make my mind up yet.

White it is.

Bose Sound Dock adaptor

Any guesses as to whether Bose will supply a new adaptor for the nano to fit in the Sound Dock?

I guarantee you that iPod Mini will resurface sooner or later. Apple had to take it off the market if they wanted to promote nano...most people would pass up 4gb-color-screen-ultrathin-ipod for 6gb mini if they were to spend $249. This was to market nano as the only option at $199-$249 range.

IMO, when 1.8inch hard drive makers (such as Toshiba) starts making 10gb drives, expect to see iPod mini come back into play then, probably at $279 or something like that (with nano price drop to $179-$229.

This was a very shrewd move by Jobs.

I bet you are dead on. If I had to guess we will see at MWSF in January saying "Well, everyone was so sad to see it go... we had to bring it back. But better".

My guess is an 8gb mini and a 4gb nano rather than the 2/4 or 4/6 we have/had. $249 for the mini, 199 for the nano. Mini will get color screen, better battery, TV out for photos (while nano will not have this feature), and also maybe slightly lighter (say 3oz rather than 3.5).

The shuffle will get the 2gb model then at $149, and the 1gb shuffle for $99. Or less on both, say $139 and $89. The 512 will get dropped.

BTW, does anyone else think that the name iPod micro would have been better than nano?

""And do you think there will be a Car Radio FM Transmitter for it??

Of course there will be. There actually is one for it as we speak "Charger/Fm transmitter". On the apple site go into the ipod accessories ->car audio and do the search which ipod thing on the top left and select Nano. It will then show you that there is one that works with the Nano.

But the reviews dont sound too good so im skipping on that one plus it doesnt have the whole bendy support thing like others have.

The thing I want to know is when do you guys think that more companies will come out with a charger/fm transmitter, cuz this is one of the main reasons I was going to buy an ipod mini.

Not if I was Bill Gates. I suspect they avoided the 'micro' name just to slight the Redmond crowd...

New Keynote Transitions???

Aside from the obvious iPod Nano announcement, did anyone notice the transitions Steve used in his Keynote?

Mybe its just me, but I saw at least one new one ... the fram split in the middle and then each side opened like a double door, out toward the right and left side ...

Is this new? Could there be a keynote update in the near future?

You hit it on the nail, dude. Take the "no more iPod mini" (didn't even had time to get a color screen), take the new iPod nano (that thing has a color screen), add in a pinch of perpendicular technology, and in about 1 year, bye-bye regular-size iPod and welcome the new iPod with 80GB storage, a.k.a. "previously known as iPod mini". With a color screen, of course.

Yeah I noticed that too! Maybe Keynote 3 is just around the corner?!

Did they ever add things such as new transitions with a regular software update?

Steve Jobs during that special event has pointed out the iPod mini is the best selling ipod in the world, also it is the one that most companies are after.
I belive that Apple wanted to stay one step ahead of competition. So they have pushed the untachable to unthinkable with this new disign. Thus, making competion choke on what ever they had.

I miss minis too, but color Tubes should make that easier. As a matter a fact, I think this is the reason they have made those tubes.

pretty cool product. Not the best value though.

Anyone watch the keynote when Kanye West is singing? I was laughing on the floor. Dead crowd, what was apple thinking? I loved steve freaking out when the phone wouldn't resume play, by far one of the funniest/ least smooth keynotes in the history of apple.

there's a 3rd party plug in that has lots of transitions for keynote. Keynote 3 is at least 1.5 years away.

That's a good point. Probably a bad idea to use micro in the name of any Apple product. Somehow nano doesn't sound right, though. Love the product, can't wait to get mine, but... the name just doesn't fit.

iPod Flash? tinyPod? Maybe some slick sounding letters, like iPod NM or SM? Dunno none of those sound any good either. I suppose nano will grow on me!

Oh, I had a good idea, I think... they should have included an IR RX/TX device in the nano so that you could program it to work as a remote for your tv/dvd/cable/whatever. It's the right size and has all the right controls for basic input... would have been a much cooler extra feature than the stopwatch.

Actually, I think Keynote 3 will come out in MWSF '06, as part of iWork '06.

Sounds plausible to me.

It's possible they were going for micro, but perhaps the GameBoy micro hindered that idea.

Besides which, many people associate "micro" with diminished features and/or functionality of larger versions, which is unfair to the nano. "Nano" on the other hand, most people associate with very futuristic, technological and advanced concepts.

Awesome

I think the Nano is awesome. Although I agree with some that the black will be harder to keep purdy. I want a black one though... Too bad my yearly toy was my iMac G5! I will have to save up I spose....I think it is a great design.

Wow I just realized I am now a Macrumors member. Wow. I am honored! LOL.

So, Apple finally releases a new iPod and it still doesn't have built-in FM radio and line-in recording? WTF were they thinking? ;)

yeah...I'd have to agree. Very mixed reactions. On one hand, really slick looking ipod. But then, there's no radio, bt, etc..and when it's that thin, you can easily add a little thickness for a radio of some sorts. Also, what do you think about having the headphone connector on the bottom? That means you take the headphones out whenever you put it in the dock. For a company that pays so much attention to detail...wtf is up with that?
