Got me a white 4Gig iPod nano

from the Shibuya Apple Store at 10.15 this morning (opened at 10.00).

There was a lot of stock out on the counters (and heaps of un-opened long brown carboard boxes ready to explode!) and around 50 people lined up at the register...

And a nice black iPod nano shopping bag that the little nano box fit in noce and snug...

Also got an arm band, but no lanyard headphones, I guess they are still on the way...

Go with white nano... black looks great when it's clean and unmarked, but the instant you get scratches or fingerprints on it, it looks like crap. White hides such blemishes much more effectively.

(Trust me on this... I used to own a black Audi TT. Now I own a SILVER Audi TT. I'll never buy another black car again.)

Got Boost?

J/K

A little Turbo humor from an other 1.8t owner (unless ClayJ has a 3.2 TT)

I decided to get the Black iPod, only because I plan on protecting it, and I hope that it is black plastic, and not painted .. Keeping my fingers crossed.

...what do you think about having the headphone connector on the bottom..?

I guess it it the way the components fit together. Given the screen is probably taking up all the thickness there is no space up top for a headphone jack. You would have to move the screen down and that would be fugly.

If you haven't seen one in person you cant imagine how thin it is. The dock connector cable end (with the 30 pins, and included with the nano) is as thick as the iPod nano itself- it is literally as thin as a pencil, so there components must be acked nice and tight in there.

It is really small when you hold it in your hand...and I want the lanyard...NOW

The iPod nano should have been what was the first iPod. We've come a long way baby. I can't imagine the short-term negative reaction from you folks. The form factor is killer. It's now only a matter of time Flash density increases and if past predictions hold true into the future, expect 20GB iPod nanos within 18-24 months.

yeah...I'd have to agree. Very mixed reactions. On one hand, really slick looking ipod. But then, there's no radio, bt, etc..and when it's that thin, you can easily add a little thickness for a radio of some sorts. Also, what do you think about having the headphone connector on the bottom? That means you take the headphones out whenever you put it in the dock. For a company that pays so much attention to detail...wtf is up with that?

no FM, or XM radio, not BT. Sounds lacking. I have one already and am pleased so far. NO requirement to upgrade yet. :)

As for the headphone jack on the bottom, I believe when you dock it the sound is sent via the USB 2.0 cable to the computer and if I am not mistaken there is a headphone jack on the back of the dock. If not Apples mistake. ;) :)

We will see a doubling of flash memory, count on us getting to 6-10 gigs in 16-20 months time. :)

Flash memory is expensive and very hard to reach those higher densities, unlike HDD.

With the new Nano, I believe the MacTel notebooks will be super thin, thus the requirement for low power chips. :D

Do you think Apple will engrave a firewire port on my iPod nano?

I know what you USB apologists are going to say. But that doesn't change the fact that my firewire port on my PB is my "iPod port" and my USB ports are "already in use by everything else!" :p

almost great design and unoriginal tv ad

The design is great except for the proportions of the clickwheel to the screen.

That screen is so tiny. It's ridiculous.

Couldn't they have made the screen a bit taller? it would've made it more practical and more aethetically pleasing.

The small form factor is amazing though.

I wonder if they are going to eventually replace the iPod with one that is closer to the iPod nano form factor.

I mean, with the advance of technology, the direction can only be going smaller.

The iPod range would probably shrink in number.

Also, I don't understand why they aren't extending the battery life? Some people prefer to be able to listen to the iPod a whole 2 days without recharging.

That TV ad they showed in the keynote is really unartistic.
What's with the hand trying to grab the iPod nano away from another hand?
How overused and totally unoriginal!

So basically I thought that Apple's stock was overpriced until this Nano. What they've managed to do is keep demand sky high for another 12 months at least without a) lowering prices or b) moving beyond the core iPod experience with stuff like satellite radio, etc. They have just put out another very cool machine that will sell on coolness alone and the key is that it has room to grow as apple can simply stoke demand by doubling capacity in a year and then doubling again in another year. The fear that cell phones or other manufacturers are going to take iPod turf has been at the very least delayed 2 years. And every day that Apple sells more AAC and more people use iTunes, we are moving closer to a music world dominated by Apple (not a great thing for consumers, but it could be worse). Anyway, kudos on a killer design Apple. Well done. This is the first time Apple has really impressed me since the iMac G5 (well, the Mac Mini too).

I got my order in, although don't you wish?

The Creative Nomad looks more and more ridiculous with each passing year. I can't even stand carrying around my 2G 20 GB iPod. That thing is the size of a brick!

I'll wait until the nano reaches 20 GB before I buy, but dammit it'll be a painful endurance test of patience and restraint.

no firewire? who cares!!!

i am confused.......
i dont know if I should...
...
....
......
order black or white ;) ;) ;)
its beauuuuuuuutiful!!!!!!!!!!!

no firewire?! as it is beauuuuuutiful, who cares.....shuffle also no firewire
now the question is, who will still buy Motorola phone while u see NANO....

I dont know if I can wait that long. I think I'll hold out until the 8GB.

Head phone jack is excellent

Just read a few of you not happy with the headphone jack. Well, take your iPod in the control grip, and put it in your pocket without adjusting your grip and be careful of the headphone jack....you don't want to damage it....because your jack is on the top! Now put it on the bottom and problem solves.

I am looking forward to that, as I am delivery of my nano. It will go better with my iBook as opposed to my beloved 15gb iPod. I like to travel light, and I can now keep the 15gb in the car, and take the nano out on my Bike rides, and it will be MUCH better for the KTM.

I am keeping my hard disk version (love it to death) but I am looking forward to bigger flash versions!!

I don't want to be labelled a Nano hater or anything, but I'm kind of disappointed this is replacing the Mini.

Don't get me wrong, this looks like a really cool product and all.

But.... I don't like having the slimness (and the lack of space that comes with it) forced upon me. This feels like it should be a replacement for the Shuffle, not the Mini. Paying $200 for 2GB sucks IMO when the Mini used to be 4GB at the same price. I don't like having to pay a premium to get back up to 4GB. I also liked the colors.

I love the Nano, but after that press invite, I was expecting something more revolutionary than evolutionary.

To play a little devil's advocate: That's what people said about the original iPod, too. "Well, it's just an overpriced mp3 player." Or how about when the mini came out: "It doesn't carry enough songs. Who'd want them at that price?"

In both instances the naysayers were incredibly wrong.

Yeah I agree with that. I really liked the Mini. I have two 4gb green ones-- one I bought and one as a gift from my job. However, I just bought a black iPod Nano because it's the new hotness.

I love the minis. But I think they were a terrible support problem for Apple. I think they could have allowed for more colors in the Nano.

What type of support problem do you mean? Just curious.

Nano dock connector

Nano is the only iPod Micro killer. The design is amazing and many people will buy it on impulse only. The headphone port on the bottom will take some getting used to for anyone coming from an older iPod. The lanyard headphones are a good idea but I wonder if there is any danger of the Nano detaching from the dock connector on its own. Also, the line out must have been replaced by a headphone out signal through the dock connector; it would not be possible to change the volume of lanyard headphone using the click wheel if the nano has line out.

Goodbye FireWire; I shall miss you. Oh the good times...

i'm getting one, but WHY do we have to go back to those easily-scratched shiny backs? i wouldn't have minded a completely white or completely black one. It's just those damn scratches I hate.
