My stupid shuffle is dead so I'll save for a nano. At least for another $100 over the shuffle I can get a color screen, wheel and have more than 70 songs.

something i like about the shuffle is that the button sticks up from the player. you can FEEL it when you need to pause or adjust the music somehow. you don't have to look at it. it's good for working out. you can hide it under your clothes and still control it by feel.

still, the nano is way cooler.

That's a good point. I love the Shuffle for that reason. In fact, I find I use it more often than my ipod photo.

Still, I wanna Nano. Buy now or wait for 8gigs is the question...

you know what, I dont think the Mini is completely dead yet...

I was wondering what the long term future for the Shuffle was, because its whole marketing scheme is based on it being small enough in terms of memory for Shuffle to be ok for playback. Sooner or later, the Shuffle would have to become larger with a screen right? At that point, it isnt a shuffle no more. Surely thats the Nano? Its still tiny. Its still flash based. There is obviously limits right now to how large a flash drive can become - and if the iPod becomes 80 or 100gb with the next iteration, then there would be a huge difference between these flash Nanos and the main iPod... it would come to a point where iPods have too much space for most people, but the Nano doesnt have enough.

I wouldnt rule out the iPod Mini making a comeback with a 2nd gen version of it. By removing it for the moment, they make the Nano THE must have iPod right now.

Just my 2cents

How many of you guys have acctually bought them, so far? I really want to know what a black nano would look like in a clear "tube".

Can anyone help me at all?

My only gripe with the iPod nano is that they put the audio jack on the bottom of the device. What's that about?

At work, iPod on desk, I want to read the screen, so that end is pointed away from me. Therefore headphone jack on base makes a lot of sense, to stop the iPod spinning around everytime I tug on the cable for whatever reason.

Yes, but many users (esp. Mac) only have USB 1 ports. To fill a 512MB shuffle, it doesn't take that much time, even through USB 1. To fill a 2GB nano, that's a little more time-consuming.

yes, my crapped old g4 used to have usb 1,
and i did bought a PCI USB 2 to fit my shuffle...
if you are using iMacG4 / iBook G3,
sorry....
i am one of the iBook G3 user....too....

Dock Adaptor?

So what does the dock adaptor do exactly? Does it adapt a full size iPod dock to fit the nano?

Also I notice that the nano dock description says "you can plug a stereo mini cable to its line-out port and enjoy a clean, direct connection."

So it still has line out for those that were asking.

Hand-on an iPod nano

Well I popped into the Shibuya Apple store too today, and checked out the nano.

It's very thin... actually surprisingly so. It's almost like a mini hifi's remote control.

The screen is very small, but sharp so you can read everything on the screen... except the instruction texts are a bit tiny... you have to squint to see them clearly. The photo functionality is such a gimmick, since on this screen, it's blatantly obvious that "full-screened" photos are little more than little stamp-sized splashes of colour.

The whole unit feels well-made.

The small scroll wheel is great and works like any other. I don't think it looks bad in the proportions.

The back is the same old shiny metal which looks like an oilfield after 100,000 curious Japanese fingers have touched it.

The front face is also a fingerprint magnet... though it's less obvious on the white model as opposed to the black.

The black model is stunning... perhaps more classy looking than the white one... since it's like a black and silver card. The scroll wheel's a matt black.

The small screen and scroll wheel positioning looks a bit disproportionate - clumsy - like I mentioned previously; there's a whole lot of no-man's land above and below the scroll wheel.... and then suddenly, clinging to the edge of the top, the screen.

I'm wondering about Steve's change pocket in his jeans... they must be like Mary Poppin's handbag since I doubt that you could fit what I saw today, width-wise and length-wise, into ANY change pocket.

The dock connector plug thingy feels a bit loose and unstable when plugged into the bottom of the unit.

When I was there, all the 4Gb blacks were sold out.

Well I guess all in all, it's a great razor thin gadget that would certainly add to Apples bottom line.

This is a desparate attempt by apple to get revenue, they have no new ideas on the computer line until intel & now they are trying to sell you same **** for more money - who cares if its flash - like that will ever be something you ask the sales assistant before buying an MP3 player - its all about capacity & money.

the nano is nice enough, but thats it. nice. the pricing is ALL wrong! £30 separates the 4Gb & the 20Gb.

AGREED!
If the nano was to replace a product, that should have been the Shuffle.
In my opinion the ipod mini was the best looking ipod out there and one that, in design terms, was closest to the Power mac/book line of computers. A silver ipod mini with a colour screen would have been the best companion for my powerbook... Now there is no chance of that happening.

Oh, and one more thing... You do realize that for the price of a 4GB ipod mini you now only get a 2GB ipod nano, right??

I'm assuming you weren't around when the mini was introduced, That was the biggest arguement for why the mini would flop.

It's also the reason to discontinue the mini and not the shuffle.

It seems odd that the shuffle goes from 512MB to 1GB,
the nano goes from 2GB to 4GB,
and the iPod goes from 20GB to 60GB.

Strictly from a capacity standpoint, it seems like they are leaving a lot of middle ground untouched. But from a cost standpoint, once you have outgrown flash memory, you may as well jump to 20 and 60 GB capacities, as the additional cost is negligable.

Still, when I purchased my iPod 4 months ago, the best convergence of size, capacity and cost was the 6GB mini - something they don't even offer anymore. For the same price I can get a sexier nano, but lose 2GB of capacity.

Still, it's pretty hard to argue with Apple's success here - you have to believe they know what they are doing.

USB 2.0 = very fast. Relax.
USB 2.0 = not supported by any of my family's Macs.

Although I'll be remedying that with a new Powerbook if Apple ever updates them ;-).

There is a legitimate concern that many people have Macs that are only 2 or 3 years old and cannot support USB 2.0. Syncing this thing at USB 1 speeds would be a nightmare.

Anyway, it looks great but the name is indeed cheezy (I would have branded it as the new iPod mini). It's not my market (I'm a couple months away from maxing out my 3rd-gen iPod 20gb), but I expect it to sell well.

Shuffle Has a Place

There is no reason to discontinue the shuffle, there is still a $70-$100 difference between the shuffle and the nano. People can't always afford a $200 iPod, and the $99 Shuffle makes a great gateway to the iPod world, the shuffle is not going anywhere, it still has a place in the iPod price world. Not everyone has oodles of disposable income.

I for one love it!
Can't say I was ever a fan of the look of the iPod mini.

But this looks great! Can't wait to see a real one!
Mmm I have a 3G 40GB iPod...30 GB music ish...

but I think i want one!!!!
I know I want one!!!!

sigh mmm resist... resist...

Succumb, succumb!! ;-)

I too was never a HUGE fan of the mini's design. I didn't hate it though.

I do love the look of the nano though... and I've ordered one to replace my shuffle.

2Gb is more than enough for a 2nd iPod for me. I use my shuffle if I'm going out and don't want a heavy 60 gigger weighing my pocket down.

Can't wait!!

AMAZING!!!!!

This really is one of the most amazing products EVER!
I think a black one would go very nicely with my PB.
But I must admit that I still dislike the white varieties because of the grey click-wheel, something about it just looks wrong to me.

New Features

I hope Apple releases a software upgrade for exsiting color screen iPods to include some of the new features found in the Nano (e.g. screen lock, world clock). The same feature's should be available across the iPod line.

Spring/summer next year will see next update to the reange. Nano product is to tide over apple for christmas sales which is vital for them. Creative/sony ect have launched their products and they dont have the same allure, i suspect PSP and NANO will be the big sell this christmas. HOWEVER I for one will not invest IPOD-V is so near to lauch anyone with a working ipod now should hold on, otherwise 6 months from now will regret, plus 20gb range will also be shrunk down. The lesson, for all you wannabe apple owners buy into the new nano, but hold on if possible as much more to come from the market definiong apple.

Replaceable battery, or disposable?

Has there been any mention of the ability to replace the battery, or do you just toss it into the toxic waste bin after a year or two?

The "nano plus" is already out
