Color choices???

I agree with most that the look of the new ipod nano is something to behold -- sleek, stylish and sexy! It definitely has a more sophisticated, high-end look than previous ipod models. The one area that concerns me is the lack of colors. I like the black but know that pink was one of the most popular colors for women. Women tend to like gadgets that are more "cute" and less industrial looking. I'm hoping Apple realizes this and introduces a whole spectrum of nano colors before Christmas. Sure, you can add color with a sleeve or case but that's just not the same.

I'm a little surprised that Apple dropped the mini as it was their best selling model and actually had more capacity for the same cost. I'm guessing that they want to upsell more people to the full-sized ipod line. I still see a place for the mini in 6GB and 8GB sizes between the nano and full-sized ipods. Also, drop the shuffle prices another $20 and intro a black shuffle similar to the black nano.

Overall, great new product! Way to go Apple. Now make a real iphone because the ROKR is awful. Like others have said, buy a RAZR and a nano instead!!

Note that the Nano Plus is Creative's second generation Nano - they've been using the name for some time.

Either Apple's product naming people are clueless, or The Steve is taunting Creative.

BTW, the Nano Plus is lighter than the Ipod Nano, is only slightly larger (28 cm3 vs 25 cm3), and has an FM radio with 32 presets, FM recording, a microphone for voice recording, and 18 hours battery life using standard user-replaceable AAA batteries. ($112 for 1 GB version)

And did someone mention color choice?

Watching these crappy products from the competitors just tells me how far they are from Apple in terms of design, quality and user interface...it's amazing that, after almost 5 years in the market, NO ONE COMES CLOSE to Apple...and with the Nano, the gap has just grown wider, much wider...

The Nano is ALREADY probably one of the TOP THREE design marvels in Apple's history...really.

Just because the ipod has a larger market share than the competition doesn't mean it is better. If that was so, then what could we say about apple's computers??

I personaly feel that the iPod Nano is a great product. I would however have prefered an iPod mini with colour screen. It was the design, material, storage capacity and overall style that set it apart from the competition and brought it to the first place, in terms of sales and popularity.

I'm so weak...

I lasted about 19 hours.

I loved the nano, like everyone else.

But I fly very long distances, so I needed the extra battery life and the two extra gigs of hard disk space.

But I am weak. I bought the 4 gig nano. Logic could only hold me back for 19 hours.

Oh well, no buyers remorse at all.

well, not exactly

It's not that Apple has forgotten about you. It's that things move on. USB 2.0 is now the ubiquitous standard for things from mice to printers to the iPod. It is now only high speed hard drives and digital video cameras that use Firewire. Apple is merely reflecting what's happening in the industry as a whole!

USB 2.0 was well on the way to ubiquity 2 years ago when Apple was still selling a number of USB 1.1 Macs. But Apple wanted to squeeze just a little more profit out of their margins, so they waited. I wouldn't say that they forget; rather they trade upward campatibility for tiny increases in marginal profit.

Oh well

I couldn't pass it up. I bought a 2Gig Nano in Black and an armband. It'll probably replace the shuffle and I'll give the shuffle to my son who's been wanting an iPod of his own. I guess I'll deal with the slow load time from USB 1.1 or buy a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card (been wanting one anyway since my new digital camera is USB 2.0 capable too).

It just called to me..

Sony just released this hours after the nano.

Sony, take a seat next to Rokr on the ugly bench ;)

I love the new iPod nano but what makes it most exciting is this could easily evolve to be a handheld computer. It is a short distance from this to a PDA.

Yes, the PDA as a PDA market is saturated but it could easily be revived. It needs a new killer application like combining it with phone, camera, GPS, Wi-Fi phone/browser, MP3, data vault/backup, etc. One of the big problems is the need for total integration. You put it down next to your computer, Mac, Windows or Unix variant and it syncs. Apple is already close to that with iSync and Backup.

Palm is failing but has a huge amount of great software that does not require much computing power. Apple should buyout Palm, fold them into the MacOS and bring out an Apple PDA/MP3/VoiceRecorder/Camera/CellPhone/WiFiPhone/GPS/DataVault/etc the size of the iPod nano. That would be a real killer product.

Upgrading from Shuffle - ROKR or Nano?

I had a 20GB iPod which I replaced with a 6GB mini, which was a bigger improvement than I thought it would be. Then, I bought a 1GB Shuffle on impulse, not thinking I would ever really replace the mini. Well, it turns out the Shuffle is all I ever use. It comes with me everywhere without thinking.

The nano is even thinner than the Shuffle - and holds photos -- so I think this will be my new iPod.

As for the phone, not my cup of tea, but having nice speakers and not needing headphones is a real plus. I have a Treo with a 1GB card. It has a built in mp3 player and a crappy mono speaker. I carry songs and audio with me and have found a use, like listening to a podcast through the phone rather than whipping out some earbuds, but not as much as I would have thought.

I ordered one shortly after the announcement yesterday....

Woke up this morning....

Canceled my order... it was a knee jerk reaction to the release. It is cool, but I just don't need one.

Booo

I have a mini and would upgrade in a second to a flash mini with color screen. Based on the rumors, that's what I was expecting. The nano is a "no sale" for me.

I like the choice of colors with the mini, the longer battery life, the metal case (plastic...eeew), and the larger storage (6 GB). Go backwards with less battery for a color screen? No thanks.

Very brave of Apple to kill off their most popular line of iPods. Makes you wonder why they were so popular to begin with...

more color choices

Colorwarepc has announced that it will soon begin selling iPod nanos in a variety of colors.

That is really cool. Hopefully they will have blue.

Ok, now that the mini has been displaced.... maybe we'll see a revamp of the mini in paris? colour screen, longer battery life, and 6, 8, 10 gb models, more colours?? They couldn't have killed it just to downsize, it was/is their best selling ipod.
That said, yeah, I like the nano. Would get one if they were applicable to the edu offer

They will most definitely have blue has a color option. Here is what the mini looks like in light blue.

I would hope that there won't be a lot of complaining about the nano.

Hopefully it will be a darker blue this time.

some accessories

isn't anyone pissed that they took off the remote control port?

I have a 2nd Gen. 4GB silver mini, and I use it to control the music when I ride my motorcycle and have the ipod in my backpack using the griffin airclick mini...

I really want a black one, but then how will I control my tunes?!?!

Apparently you haven't read the threads this morning. It's a bitch-fest war zone. We need FEMA now!

Why not micro?

Huh, why did they skip he "micro" and go straight from "mini" to "nano"? So what's the next smaller one going to be called, the "pico"?
