Already ordered my new mini! I have a trip coming up next month and this will be much easier to travel with than my old 10.5 pro. I already have the first pencil so am pleased that I can still use it!

I'm good with this one. But disappointed with it still having the Lightning port... Intentionally putting differences on how to charge basically the same types of devices (iPads) is showing the bean counters in Apple are getting more and more influence in the design of devices.

A12 ... that will breathe 4-5 years in the device.

Fingers crossed they throw 3-4 GB RAM too. My hope is 4 as the iPads can have multiple apps.

If you want Face ID, USB-C and second generation Pencil, you need a Pro model. They had to draw the line somewhere I guess.

You’re welcome! Sorry about that snarky comment there, though.
Also, good job with the quotes lol

Here is the thing, iPads will never be as good as e-ink (e-readers) for reading. I love my iPad Pro 12.9, but the Kindle Oasis and the Kindle Voyage have a very special place in my heart.

I agree! I have just purchased an Oasis 2 over an iPad Mini and I absolutely love reading again now. I use too many back-lit screens during the day at work and home, so it's a delight reading from the E Ink display.

Let's see...
  • A12 Bionic chip with Neural Engine
  • 7.9‑inch Retina display with True Tone and fully laminated display
  • Stereo speakers
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • Apple Pencil support
  • Touch ID*
  • 64GB in the base model**
  • Only 300 grams
  • No price increase
Complain about the bezels and the not-quite-centered home button all you like, what's really important is the hardware inside. I don't see what people can complain about with all the features it has.

* Not everyone likes the idea of a 3D face scanner, some of us actually prefer a fingerprint reader. Face ID would probably have increased the price, too. Leave those gimmicks to the more expensive iPads and iPhones.

** No need to make people pay for storage they'll never use. As an example, my iOS device with the most storage has 16GB and still has plenty of space left. I would even say 64GB seems excessive, I would have liked to see a 32GB iPad mini for 80$ less.

All great points. You just need to add an asterisk next to headphone jack because there have been heated debate over keeping vs omitting. Frankly, I want to keep the headphone jack because I prefer this when listening to music.

HA! I'll pass. Was waiting for an updated Mini to complement my iPad Pro but WTH was Apple thinking to make this compatible with yester-year's Apple Pencil? It's not uncommon for users with an iPad Pro as the main machine (myself) to grab a Mini to tote around but if i have to carry around two different pencils (especially the previous model) it's a non-starter.

Then you have the price ... wow, this is the model that should've been out when the A12 first hit.

Call me when the iPad Pro Mini hits.

Apple must have a major back stash of Apple Pencil Gen 1's lol, Maybe that is why they made it work with the old one only

Right. They would've sold more of the current gen, not to mention no one can be sure the Gen 1 will be of any use in the next model.

The case is a different style, you couldn't charge the Apple Pencil 2 on it anyway.

Good for you? I guess that means nobody else needs more than 64GB.

Sorry, that is not what he said. He pointed out that he does not need more, which is a reasonable response to people arguing that the base model does not have enough storage.

So this is effectively a price increase. iPad mini 4 wifi 128GB is $399. NAND storage prices are at all time low right now. Surely at Apple's scale 64GB of bare NAND chips couldn't cost them more the couple of dollars. I guess they got those who only want iPad minis by the you know what that they can price this so much higher than the larger iPad. This would've been day 1 buy for me to upgrade my wife's and daughter's minis had they not nickel and dime with the storage. I will wait until it goes on sale closer to the holidays.

Wait, I thought the Apple event is next week? They couldn't wait till next week to announce it?

I'm doubtful as I don't see it anywhere, but---- is the new screen in this capable of HDR/Dolby Vision for iTunes purchases?

Why are you all complaining?
Besides Apple Pencil and not Apple Pencil 2 support what's not to like. I honestly thought iPad Mini was on death watch.

Yes it's only an evolutionary update but it's everything I want in an iPad mini.

Would I like to see an iPad mini with design similar to the new iPad Pro, yes. But I'm also not going to pay iPad Pro prices for it so until then I think this is a great solution.

Yeah, but eink was specifically designed for reading text on. So it’s always going to be better. My mum has an iPad Pro and Kindle, and she always exclusively uses her Kindle for reading her books.

Not true and adds to my original point. They needed to change the design, and once that happened charging the pencil wouldn't be an issue. The magnets and charge point are well within the width of the Mini. Sure, the top and bottom of the pencil will stick out some, but compared to the original that's not a problem.

It’s a catch 22 I think, we were all expecting, because the never wrong analysts like Koh, said the new Mini would be cheaper and have some things cut, so we all thought an affordable but cut back iPad.
But as they were ALL wrong (See proof Koh DOES get it wrong) and Apple has pulled a blinder, we now have an exoensive but very feature packed and powerful new Mini.

That’s how I see it. Not complaining I guess, just surprised as this isn’t what we were lead to believe.

These are both spec bumps. Not much news there other than something was released, so not really worthy of time at a keynote.

Probably also a good indicator that next Monday is going to be services only.

Still rocking an iPad mini 2 on iOS 12 here. With 16 GB. It gets crowded, but between allowing podcasts to stream and iOS automatically cleaning rarely-used apps, it works.

Sure, I wouldn’t buy a new one with this capacity, but the new minimum is four times that at 64, so…

How were you able to get ios12 on the mini 2? I have a mini 2 and it is stuck on iOS 9.

I was hoping for an ipad mini with a pro design & apple pencil 2 support. But from the rumors, i kinda knew that was a long shot. I am glad the rumor of them cheapening the screen didn’t come true tho. I really need to update my 5yr old ipad mini, so i will be buying this. Only wish I could use my ipad pro apple pencil 2 on it tho. That would be perfect. But what ya gonna do?

Don’t wanna wait for the next update. I don’t think my mini 2 could survive another 3 years. But with my luck, they’ll come out with an ipad mini pro next year. Lol.

I agree and I'd add that it seems a bit behind the curve to update a product that's almost four years old with yesterday's tech.

I can see a new iPad Air being compatible with the old pencil and keyboard case, but the Mini shouldn't be IMHO. It's a bit like making a new iPod Touch with a dock connector right after Apple says it's moving to lightning. That didn't happen, but why is Apple making new tech compatible with something that wasn't ergonomic or practical, and which has already been updated?

Or maybe this new Mini is more like an ePad or something.

I see you editetd, but your comment now does not make sense, it was Apple- like so far, it is Apple-like now.

It does make sense because it didn‘t look Apple-like back then and still doesn‘t look Apple-like.
