Not true and adds to my original point. They needed to change the design, and once that happened charging the pencil wouldn't be an issue. The magnets and charge point are well within the width of the Mini. Sure, the top and bottom of the pencil will stick out some, but compared to the original that's not a problem.

I meant the case is a different style, so you couldn't charge the Apple Pencil 2 on it as the edges aren't flat. I wasn't referring to the size at all. Perhaps Apple want to keep the non-Pro line a different style to justify the 'Pro' price.

You must have a Mini 1, non-Retina, as Mini 2 and up can get iOS 12.

You’re right- I just checked and it’s the original mini.

Man, I don’t even know what to do with those. They are super slow and apps are not supported.

Alarm clock, home automation (if the app supports it). Streaming device, car entertainment center, kid's tablet?

If I hadn’t already bought a new iPad Pro I’d prob snap one of these up. Hoped for something be bezelless or cheaper but this update still looks great. I’m sure that screen is amazing.

I hear ya. I bought one of the new pros too. But i’ve always had an ipad mini as well. They really compliment one another. I grab the mini when i wanna travel really light. My 5yr old ipad mini 2 is dying tho. Was hoping for some pro features on this update. Apple pencil 2 support. Face ID. Usb-c. But that was not to be.

I didn’t mean to offend you by saying that. I’m genuinely sorry if you did. Honestly, I haven’t given much thought about its placement before you’ve pointed out the home button symmetry. Here’s an interesting fact, if you have the leather case, it becomes almost symmetrical with the added thickness of the case. Same for Pro and Air 2. Who knows maybe busybodies at Apple marketing and finance bureau ordered Jonathan Thin a bundle design deliberately. Sometimes tuxedo of a cow can be extremely profitable :) It also explains camera bumbs but I wouldn’t insist on it.

No worries, I wasn‘t offended. Just asked myself "what is this guys' problem?".

It‘s just weird that the iPads' Home Buttons were/are off-center while I don‘t remember iPhones having the same issue. Especially since it must be harder to squeeze all the tech in a significantly smaller body. The iPads remind me of the Galaxy S III.

These are both spec bumps. Not much news there other than something was released, so not really worthy of time at a keynote.

Probably also a good indicator that next Monday is going to be services only.

Hopefully not just just an event for US-only monthly subscription services, and AirPower/AirPods will get some time

Damn... well the analysts INCLUDING the apparently always correct Koh, got it totally wrong!!

So much for a cheaper iPad Mini, was not expecting this at all.
But will be looking into it for sure. Damn powerful with what seems to be a hell of a screen. But still expensive hmm...

But Apple got things wrong also. If Apple has sold all the A12 powered iPhones they were projecting before Fall 2019 launch then they wouldn't need new iPad Minis to soak up the large excess in A12 wafer start contracts they probably have.

Once throw the A12 into the Mini then it can't be the "low cost leader" Apple might have been hoping for.

Given Apple's struggles with not getting as man folks as hoped to chase the higher average selling price of the iPhones and iPad Pros this Mini and Air makes much more sense. Apple sticking with an "even older" iPad model for economics through at least the Fall (if not until next Spring) makes sense on the volume front.

I don't think they didn't shift at the last minute (Since Fall), so this should have shown up in the supply chain for Koh to find, but he may have chased an older plan too long. ( Or perhaps that was just the disinformation Apple pumped into the system. I'm sure they are happen when they get to a "not expecting that all" launch. )

We’re you an expecting a smaller iPad Pro for a third of the price?

Judging by the comments made in previous threads when the mini 5 was just “rumored”, the expectation was either for a simple processor bump to an A11 and a price reduction to ~$199 or an iPad mini Pro with a larger bezelless OLED screen, Pro industrial design, A12, Pro Motion 120Hz, a headphone jack, FaceID, USB-C and a partridge in a Pear Tree.

Fifty percent of those respondents thought that $399 for the mini Pro with all of those things was fair and the other fifty percent said price was no object, which we all know really means “not more than $50 higher” in price than the outgoing model...or else. Neither of these two positions were anywhere close to reality, but that seems to be par for the course here.

At this point, the iPad mini is a niche product that refuses to die, just like the Mac mini. What seems to elude so many is that when Apple issues a reprieve, they are still doing it on their terms, whereas there is an assumption on the part of the offended that Apple should be making up for some imaginary deficit and sleight by choosing volume and mass appeal over catering to the 1% use case.

IMHO, both the mini 5 and the iPad Air (3?) will be solid hits and subject to the same sort of discounting Apple is doing outside of the online/brick and mortar Apple Stores. Early adopters should heed those words and wait until they need to invest in a new device.

PS - I see the complaining over the lack of an update to the 6th Gen iPad has already begun in earnest, despite the fantastic price/performance ratio, Pencil support, overall zippiness and utility of the device. Again, anyone expecting to get an A12, P3 display, et al. for $249-$329 (on sale) is not being realistic with how the market works and how Apple makes money.

Ah, my first/last Android device since moving on to iOS...

Really, Apple? Can't you apply your bezel-shrinking prowess to this device? I mean, take off the bezels and you have a jacket-pocket-sized device that will be hugely useful to lots of people! Thing is, I'll probably buy one because I need a device in this form factor, but what a missed opportunity to do something truly exciting.

Totally agree. I will update as well cause my mini 2 is dying and i need this form factor. But really think Apple missed a great opportunity to knock this out of the park. I guess those changes are coming...Apple does tend to drag things out. Until then, this will suffice. I am glad they didn’t cheapen the screen like some rumors suggested tho.

Yeah crazy that they would increase the screen and power and all the other upgrades but not increase the price. Thank goodness.
Why does everything have to be super powerful?
An entry level ipad-mini for casual browsing is not a bad idea at all..
As always, a conscious configuration choice which pushes the price up..

How incredibly lazy when the richest company in the world can't even be bothered to give it a fresh, new design. Insulting!

It is thinner. That has pretty much been Apple's focus the last several years. (slightly taller so perhaps a trade-off).

It isn't the form that they put work into. It is the functionality: better screen, better processor , etc.

The Mini is the only iPad size that has ever worked for me, personally. It has been the perfect form factor, and I have been weary of how they might screw it up with whatever pro-style update they applied to it.

In this sense, this is the PERFECT update. Fastest internals possible, pencil support, updated display, did NOT downgrade to the Mini 2 chassis, kept all else the same. Price is in line with feature set - not a surprising discount, but no surprising price bump either. It’s exactly what Mini fans have been clamoring for.

Already ordered.

Nice to see the mini finally get a proper color gamut, the last one was so ridiculously washed out.

And highest pixel density of any iPad? 326 is a nice upgrade from the old 264.

The Pencil 2 holds to the side of the chassis with magnets. My guess is that they would want this same functionality.

Not just the magnets. Pencil 2 has to be wirelessly recharged to so the induction charging system has to put inside the Mini also for it to work. Apple's quest to make the Mini as small as possible runs into conflict that that ( as the rest of the design's objective to so toss as much internal volume as they can ).

Pencil 2 roll out to the rest of the iPad line up is going to be a long extended problem. It costs more in both materials (induction charging in both devices ) and internal space.

The other "problem" now is the moment that Pencil 1 has in deployed units. Once it went into the cheapest iPad the volume of capable deployed system when way up. There also is an alternative Logitech Crayon if on a tighter budget also. There is probably not a Pencil 2 alternative for at least 1-2 years.

A12 and the upgraded P3 display exceeds what I was optimistically expecting so I’m pleased. Then again I expected them to chase a cheaper price point and this is £399.

As long as there’s 3GB of RAM like other A12 equipped devices, the only specs I’m disappointed with are the ‘stereo’ speakers still stuck together and Lightning port. On the plus side I can still plug in my earphones directly.

With an A12 + 3GB of RAM this should last a good 3-4 years without missing too many major iOS software features and continue to multitask smoothly.
