Well, they did what I wanted and left the home button and the headphone jack and a good display and did the unexpected and gave it an a12 and pencil support. I shall therefore give them money.

I do look at the overall lineup though and can't help but be a bit confused about the difference in connectors and design language amongst the various iPads and laptops. But this new mini works for me so I will shrug, purchase and continue on for the next four years or however long it lasts us. The mini is a good beast of burden for our family and I am glad Apple didn't update the practicality out of it.

Just such old, dated design though. Lazy in fact. Come on Apple make a mini sized iPad Pro design. Not something with a 2011 design.
Confusing keeping touch ID and lightning when only 5 months ago, you were promoting Face ID and USB-C Apple! What a mess of a line up!

Change for its own sake is often just a waste of cash. A Mini with Pro specs would have been great...and more expensive. I think Apple heard that Mini users, a small minority I'm sure, needed an upgrade and they did the minimum necessary to make it worthwhile. Chips and screen. I don't think Apple thinks that much of the Mini. We're tolerated. ;)

...and with the phrase that I bolded, you dear madam, have won the internet today.

I think that was Apple's plan all along with these 2 devices...bump them up a bit to keep them going.

If you mean the mini, I believe the dimensions are the same as the mini 4.
Not sure about the 10.5" model though
What about the rear microphone location? I have an otterbox case on my mini 4 and wouldn’t mind saving some cash by using it for the mini 5. If they moved it or something else, I’ll need to buy a new case.

Any word on the amount of memory for the iPad mini 5? I would like to assume if the 9.7” iPad got 3GB, so did the mini 5, but with Apple these days, that assumption could lead to disappointment.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised that Apple actually improved the already great display instead of downgrading it to a iPad mini 2/3 non-laminated display. The A12 was also a nice surprise as well as the 256GB capacity option. I just hope Apple doesn’t skimp on the memory which would be a shame. If it’s 3GB or more, I’ll be replacing my mini 4 soon.

no sale unless apple does some trade in deal. Trade in mini 4 for $200 off this.
It looks like we’ll have to be happy with $135 (just checked).

Bestuby right now it only offering $110 for my 128gb cellular mini4, which is the top spec.

Im hoping they will offer atleast 175 soon, while also dropping mini5 $75-100. That’ll be worth the trade in for me.
You’ll probably have to to wait for Black Friday sales.

XR is about $250 overpriced
Compared to Samsung, LG?

I just cannot believe Apple did not have the decency to keep the same storage. Apple sold the 128 GB iPad mini at artificially high prices for almost two years (since March 2017), and now it decided to downgrade the storage to 64 GB. Apple keeps disappointing me over and over again, and I can hardly agree with any decision the management has been making in a few years now.

Upgrading from a 64gb Mini 4 Cellular I was also a bit peeved that 128gb was not an option. but now that I think about it I’m hoping it’s indicative of a trend in the smaller devices.....provide lower-end specs and price for those who are attracted to the Mini because it can be a budget device, and higher end specs for those who love the form factor but aren't constrained by budgetary limits. The 256gb Mini 5 Cellular just set me back almost $900 with Applecare and tax, and while the 256gb is more than I need, I’m ok with the price. I just hope they do the same thing with iPhones....make a small cheap phone for those who are concerned about price, and a small premium phone for those who love the form factor but would pay lots for a premium version.

Some nitty gritty details I would love to know about this guy:

- How much ram?
- Can you charger this faster over lighting to USB-C like you can an iPhone 8 or newer? iPad Pro's wording is "Charging via power adapter or USB-C to computer system," iPad minis is "Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system" so I doubt it. If so what is the expected charge time (iPads larger batteries take much longer to charge)?
- I noticed they dropped Galileo and QZSS GPS support from the mini (as well as the new iPad Air). Any notable differences expected?
- Do they not make silicone rear cases for iPad minis? Seems like there's only a smart cover.
- What version of TouchID?
- Still no advertised IP rating for waterproofing?

A12 and same price tag? Well, it's rare for Apple to be this generous...

Generous?? You must be kidding. Apple has kept the price up artifically for years and now has reduced the storage of the iPad mini. Apple is being greedy as always. The A12 is a good chip, but technology is all about getting cheaper over time.

Getting cheaper over time is not really part of their plan, and never was. They are out to make a profit, every day.

I hear ya. I bought one of the new pros too. But i’ve always had an ipad mini as well. They really compliment one another. I grab the mini when i wanna travel really light. My 5yr old ipad mini 2 is dying tho. Was hoping for some pro features on this update. Apple pencil 2 support. Face ID. Usb-c. But that was not to be.
Even Apple Pencil 2 support would be enough to tempt me. I appreciate the update but a hard pass for me.

Sarcasm. This wasn't an update to the iPad Mini. This was a spec bump that should have been done multiple times over the last few years. The longer a product goes without an update the more substantial the update needs to be to show your commitment to it. What we have here suggests that Apple still has to many touch id sensors and first generation Apple pencils and pencil sensors on hand.
Pretty sure a spec bump also falls under update. I know everyone in this community is always looking for a radical redesign with each product update. But Apple has shown time and time again, the majority of their updates are small iterative ones. I'm fairly certain they have the R&D manpower to decide if the demand of a redesigned mini is worth the cost of making one. I'd wager a high bet it's a niche product. And they know best in how to maximize product sales through updates so they don't cannibalize their older products with newer ones.

Apple can also slow, order less, and end component production at any time since they're aware of the products they have in the pipeline and their scheduled release. They're not going to order Touch ID components in excess when half their product line has moved on to Face ID. They have teams in place to monitor supply and maximize their profits. This isn't a local market down the street that orders too many pallets of toilet paper and has to reduce the price to sell more. This is Apple, a billion dollar company with the foresight to see the changes we can't.

I don’t think I’d blink if the $399 base had 128GB storage. I know 64GB would fill up in no time. The step up to 256GB bumps the price up to $549 which I can afford but it’s just not my idea of a remorse free purchase.

Some day they will update it with iPhoneXR features, but expect a price increase too.

I would pay more for this. I would LOVE a mini-sized Pro. THAT would be a killer device for me and I'd be throwing a lot of money at Apple (but just with the iPhone SE, Apple doesn't get that some people genuinely prefer smaller devices and not because they're cheaper but for other reasons, such as small hands)

I was very ready for a new Mini - my 1st Gen hasn't really seen any light for weeks if not months because it basically has become unusable (really really really really slow).

I love that they added Pencil support...but since we own a 11" Pro, I would've loved to see Pencil 2 rather than 1.

So I guess, I'll pass.

Why would it increase the price? Because Tim can never accept margins going down as well as up?

"We designed an iPad in 2012, that should be enough for a decade"

A12 chip isn't cheap to make. And since it performs well, there will probably be a minimum of 5 years of iOS updates which a chunk of the price will go towards funding that.

Then there's the feature of building a screen that can take Apple Pencil input which is more expensive than the previous iPad Mini screen.
[doublepost=1552961983][/doublepost]
Wait... it only supports the first gen Apple Pencil? Why would I buy this mini? I’m NOT carrying around or having to keep up with two different Apple pencils throughout the day.

it wasn't designed for users that already have a 2018 iPad Pro. i guess that the number of people that need both an iPad Mini and a 2018 iPad Pro is pretty small

how do you know that the price of an A12 chip didn't go down? iPad mini has many components that make up the price tag.

It's a market Apple doesn't want to serve and it is a niche market. It's certainly not mainstream.

As you correctly state, a marked Apple doesn't WANT to serve. Regardless of whether or not there is actual demand. Apple thinks they know best what YOU want. Always have, but it's gotten particularly bad over the past years.

Bigger is not always better. But what do I know. Apple tells me otherwise, so I must be wrong.

It seems that you have never heard of such a thing as "family".
