What is this "niche market" you are talking about? Are you serious?
I would say, that rather XS MAX is niche phone with its incredible price point, rather than affordably priced SE, that speaks to much larger audience- parents buying phone for their kid, someone just wanting to get some entry lever iOS device, companies buying them in bulk for their office/ field employees, people, that just don't care about backend innovations in 7 and newer phones and just need A PHONE, people not needing huge screen..... Not even mentioning more price sensitive markets, where more affordable iPhone could help grow Apple marketshare.
I know guys, that are working in electronics retail, telecommunications and they are just in awww, how fast those SE flew of the shelves, when they still were available, and people still come in from time to time and asks- is SE2 out yet? :D
Real reason might just be, that Apple just doesn't want to make affordable, small phones, they want to make big, expensive phones, just because this is their business direction.

I, too, would be interested in a SE2, if it did come out, as I don't want to pay the higher price of the current line. An updated modem and processor along with longer battery life is sufficient for my needs.

May be the case, I have a 2018 Pro and that's the first iPad I have since 2012 so I don't remember. Doesn't make it any better though. I would expect that Apple would fix that over the years.
Ye it does look slightly odd, I don't think it's an enormous issue though, I guess there was no real chance of them redesigning the chassis with all the associated costs for a pretty niche/ budget model.

The price is quite disappointing. I was expecting a $299 non-laminated display device with the A11 processor. Essentially a smaller version of the expected $329 basic iPad. Note that even the basic iPad supports the Apple Pencil.

I guess I just don't see who this device designed for. It is essentially an iPad Pro Mini. I suspect a lot of people who wanted a new mini just wanted a small device they could throw into a purse or side pocket of a messenger bag so they can check the news or read a book while commuting.

I'm hoping Apple will announce something else along with the refreshed basic iPad. What I fear though is Apple is going to discontinue the basic devices and only offer the higher-priced, higher-profit models with no options for those of us that don't need the absolute latest processor and a laminated display for the extra $200.

I’m glad they updated the mini because it still serves a purpose. Many professions that require a person to use an iPad all day, standing up, benefit from the mini’s size and weight and so it’s good to have it updated with modern specs.

...but I don’t think I could buy this as much as I want a secondary small iPad to compliment my 12.9” Pro. Once you get used to Face ID and a gesture based iOS, it’s very jarring to go back to deliberate authentication with Touch ID and a physical home button. Everything just feels more laborious.

But why the Apple Pencil 1? Having 2 different pencils that only work with certain iPads is bound to cause confusion.

Apple should be phasing all iPads to the new Pencil 2, not introducing brand new iPads that work exclusively with the older pencil.

its their way to tell you, you are 2nd class - haha, and people love to be 2nd class obviously like the xr shows

It's a nice upgrade but two things bother me: Why didn't they offer a 128 GB version (or better 128 GB base storage) and if true these new iPads have only 2GB RAM (hope that this is not true, but have not read any confirmation about the RAM)

Awesome they revived the mini . And they listened and added Apple Pencil support as well.

I’m happy it’s been updated but I’m surprised no Face ID or AP2 support. You would think the Mini, at its higher price than iPad, would offer similar design to the pro while lacking its size and slightly slower cpu/graphics (a12 vs a12x)

Typical Apple fans bitching they go beyond what people were asking for and they bitch, best processor, kept the screen. And added pencil support, now if they had put a A10 in it, put a non laminated screen, and lowered the price to $249 people would still bitch

The only one xxxx is YOU.
we just want some nice tech!

Let's see...
  • A12 Bionic chip with Neural Engine
  • 7.9‑inch Retina display with True Tone and fully laminated display
  • Stereo speakers
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack*
  • Apple Pencil support
  • Touch ID**
  • 64GB in the base model***
  • Only 300 grams
  • No price increase
Complain about the bezels and the not-quite-centered home button all you like, what's really important is the hardware inside. I don't see what people can complain about with all the features it has.

* Yes, a lot of people still want a standard headphone jack. No dongle, no lag, no quality loss, no expensive AirPods to keep charged.

** Not everyone likes the idea of a 3D face scanner, some of us actually prefer a fingerprint reader. Face ID would probably have increased the price, too. Leave those gimmicks to the more expensive iPads and iPhones.

*** No need to make people pay for storage they'll never use. As an example, my iOS device with the most storage has 16GB and still has plenty of space left. I would even say 64GB seems excessive, I would have liked to see a 32GB iPad mini for 80$ less.

If I hadn’t already bought a new iPad Pro I’d prob snap one of these up. Hoped for something be bezelless or cheaper but this update still looks great. I’m sure that screen is amazing.

I like the CPU and screen. Not a fan of the bezel. Should of went like iPhone X/iPad Pro

I think it’s more of the direction. I felt apple went one step forward and 2 steps back.

Why keep Touch ID if Face ID is more secure and the direction Apple wants to go?

Now I have to use my finger again after having the X and using my face?

I can get over the lack of AP2 support and 64Gb.

Of course it's not an enormous issue, it just looks bad. Not sure if it would be such a hassle for Apple to fix it though since I'm pretty sure they had to redesign the casing for the new internals anyway. Fortunately I'm not in the market for a mini, Face ID all the way.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the headphone jack. Yes, you read that right, IT HAS A 3.5MM HEADPHONE JACK folks!! - I guess Apple hasn't completely lost their marbles after all!

You're right, it's still there. I am going to jump on the bandwagon and complain about something too. Why is the jack on top rather than on the bottom ;)?

I have 1 complaint, and it's the lightning port. I realize they needed to keep it for the old pencil, but this is a mistake to me. I would love to have a giant iPad, and a mini iPad, and not need two separate chargers, and two separate pencils.
