If you upgrade the Mac Mini basic from 1GB of ram to 2GB or 4GB of ram, will you be able to use 256MB for the GPU? Or is it locked at 128MB as some sorta Give Us More Money lockout by Apple? Can anyone figure this out? I can't wait to see the disassembly photos for this new Mac Mini. Also am curious if you will be able to take it up to 6GB of ram like you can on the Macbook.

Give to $50 buy ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory. This is the best choose and best config.

It looks as though Apple has gone into survival mode, which a lot of other companies are starting to do as well.

Unfortunately, this means that they are going to be extremely frugal with their updates, because they just aren't expecting to sell that many units anyway.

I'm going to pretend that this update never happened, and wait until Apple puts a serious offer on the table.

There is really no point in buying before Snow Leopard comes out anyway, because you may as well get it for free.

Dell took a 48% hit in profits, I wouldn't be surprised if their new offerings and price structures start to offend people as well.

Nvidia graphics cards, rebranding of products:

GTX will mean that you get a high-end/performance card,

GT is reserved for mainstream while

G means you have an entry-level card.

9500 is rebranded as Geforce GT120
9600 = GT130, but I am guessing the 9600m might be similar to 9500

Thank you :)

So apple has finally brought the mini up to par with PCs that shipped 18 months ago and were cheaper then.

Finally dvd burners on the low end and wireless N. Took long enough.

Yawn.

I'll say what I said before, apple dropped the ball when they designed the mini to need laptop parts. That bad call is still keeping them from being able to be competitive.

Right deciscion

There was me thinking I had broken one of the MacRumors rules and went against the buyers guide. 3 weeks ago I shelled out for a top of the line 3.06Ghz 24in iMac. - My trusty 4 + year old powerbook was creaking at the hard drive with only bytes of space left and I had no options.

So I recalled the second MacRumors rule which is buy when you have to - A mac is for life not just until the next upgrade.

I am delighted and logged in today to see what I was missing - mistakenly it is what apple is missing about £400 of my cash.

For anyone in the UK upset hit John Lewis, App refurb store etc and grab an old 24in top of the line one asap.

As for the $/£ rate, it sucks. I'm getting back to work now to improve our GDP and hope we can move it before I have to travel stateside soon.

John

the lowest priced imac in the uk is now £949 which is $1336

its way too overpriced for an "entry level" machine

Apple lost my custom today.

I was tempted on the right specs for a new iMac. Fail.

I was tempted to upgrade my Mac mini media centre. at £649? FAIL.

The most expensive mini yet!

after reading 12 pages of people angry about the pricing, all I have to say is, "this is apple we are talking about!!!" I love apple and have had tons of their computers all my life, never has their prices been cheap. People need to come to grips with that, apple=cheap does not exist. If you want cheap, build a hack/tosh

the update was needed, bravo apple

Ah! I didn't catch the 128MB bit.

So can we say its on par with the 256 2600HD then?

You missed the 128MB vs the 256MB and the fact the baseline was a 2400XT, not a 2600.

Even the 2600"pro" is a bit slower than the original "XT", it will manage to outclass the 9400m in most of the games with some exceptions I believe.

That's what I was thinking. If you can go for the higher end iMacs, upgrade to the ATI's. Otherwise, the refurbished iMacs are a better deal.

Umm, yeah it is...Especially for pushing a 1920x1200 screen.

The only thing that matter for screen res is the amount of GPU Ram available. It will be fine for everything but gaming. Let's face it the 9400M is not a gaming GPU so even at 1024x768 you would be hobbled.

If you want a gaming system build a PC... if you want an everyday user buy a mac. I think this has been established.

If you want the best of both worlds and don't care about stability *I have built many a hacks for fun so even the BEST of the using HLC proved parts... you don't get close to 100%*, build a Hack!

Only Mirror for Second Display

Did any one notice this spec on the iMac??
Support for external display in video mirroring mode

Does this mean if I hook up a second display I can only mirror???

I don't get you UK people. You're complaining about high prices, but you seem to completely forget how weak £ is for now. Nobody from euro countries complained before when Apple UK prices were THE LOWEST because of weak £. Now Apple made price correction, that's it. Stop complaining, take €.

Dude, when you look at stuff in UK versus US, it's totally ridiculous. When it was 2gbp:1usd electronics in US were like "free".

Example: my friend got the Lenovo x200 laptop for 750usd which at the time was ~375 gbp, while the price of similar laptop in uk was about 1k gbp; true, it was on sale in us (as it often is), but you never ever have lenovo on sale in uk, so i think its a valid comparison.

Example2: you can still get x200 on sale in us for 800 usd, which is now 568gbp; still pretty good versus >1k gbp you have to drop in uk, eh?

How are you not supposed to complain about this sort of stuff?

And when it comes to Apple, the only thing that makes prices remotely feasible is the education discount. 15% off + almost free apple care makes it an almost good deal; that's the only reason i'm willing to spend so much money on apple...

Even though the mini supports Dual Displays, its not worth the extra £££, i for one, would rather get a Dell than pay £500 for a basline machine with NO peripherals!

Even though OS X is superior to Windows, i can see myself going back and using XP, sad, i know.

So much for a quad core CPU. Instead we got integrated graphics!

What is Apple thinking?

Hi all,

Gutted about the UK prices. Wasn't in the market for a desktop but was planning on buying a MacBook once Snow Leopard was out.

Anyway, to sum it up, this is what i'm thinking now:

"Bring on Windows 7.."

Unhappy UK Apple fan! Feel sorry for all those who were about to purchase an iMac or had been waiting momths for the new Mini!

No remote in mac mini

19 additional € for the Apple remote. Are the remotes universal ? Can I use one on one mac mini and then on another one?

So, if I need a good GPU (but not pro), what should I Do? Buy the 24" entry level 9400M, or buy a refurb 2600XT? Which of those is better?

9400M?

Please, help!!!

anyone know if the 'guest' network on the new airport and TCs will be offered as a software update to current ones? I think its a great idea, especially for an easy way for a company to setup a guest network for clients to have access to the internet but block them from everything else.

Also, I hope the mobile me offering on the TC will be a software update as well. It allows you to access your TC from wherever you have internet, kind of like back to my mac but for the TC. I dont use Mobile Me but a buddy of mine could use this feature with his.

Really liking the new dual band radios though, great improvement.

2004 Called...

And it wants its monitor back...

24-inch (viewable) glossy widescreen, 1680 by 1050 pixels

Now you know why they have the external monitor port eh?
