Shame, the original SE was a big battery life jump over the 5S.
I was considering dropping down from an 8+ to this, but battery is the main reason I went with the larger model which makes it difficult. Might have to wait and see what the September phones bring, but I honestly still like the home button based design better and think the price here is appealing!

So basically a 3 year old phone (iPhone 8) with an up to date processor.

Not terrible...but the target audience could also just buy a refurbished 8 for around $250.

Depends on carrier. Newer models have better support for additional LTE support. My 11 had better coverage on I-44 in Oklahoma than my X did (same era as 8). Back when I could go out on the road.

You know, this bit is interesting. When the first SE came out, I think there were two very reasonable ways to look at it:

(1) "This is a return to the smaller sized phone!"
(2) "This is a use of older parts with newer internals that gives us a good phone at a cheaper price!"

#1 was never reasonable.

If the intent was #1, the SE would have cost just as much as the other phones in the lineup. The fact that it was cheaper eliminates #1 as Apple's motivation right off the bat.

You are correct that lots of consumers thought these were the two options. You nailed it; I see people still discussing it in this very thread. But looked at from Apple's point of view, this was never a debate.

No 5G? Guess I have to wait for wifey and myself..although wont it work anyways with 5G?

No. Only LTE and earlier. Now probably wait another 3-4 years go get a model that supports 5G.

The first LTE iPhone had very limited bands. I suspect the 2021 model iPhones will be better for 5G.

iPhone SE compares poorly with competition in all regards but the processor. For example Samsung A51 has 6.5" super AMOLED screen, modern set of cameras (triple camera plus depth camera), under the screen fingerprint sensor and up to 8GB of RAM. It costs $350.

Samsung A51 runs garbage android

Only thing I wanted from them, was an iPhone with the 4,7" form factor, an XR-like battery life and maybe a dual-ultrawide-cam or a single-cam with nightmode. Instead we got an iPhone 8 with an A13.

Still good for those who liked the iPhone 8 and had no problems with the rather crappy battery life.
I was just really hoping they could close the battery life gap between the 8 and 8+ a bit, would have been an ideal buy then. Going to be a more difficult decision now as this is still quite an appealing model for the price, but the battery is a borderline dealbreaker...

The XR camera is/was very very good.
It was very very good when it was introduced in 2018. Now it's 2020, and it's a good-not-great camera for a modern smartphone. And, if this follows the pattern of the original SE, this new SE will be apple's low-end model for at least two years. And the Xr camera from 2018 is going to look awfully dated two years from now.

why? it's barely a step up at all...

What if the 8 is someone's perfect phone and more years of updates is all they really want?

Same reason the SE I was the perfect phone back in 2016 for me - loved my iPhone 5 but was getting slower. That being said the original SE was a bigger boost over the 5 & 5S (better camera, better battery as well as better processor).

Nice solid phone and price for kids, older folks, or people that generally don't give a damn about technology.

As someone who played with a 4" iPhone SE recently and noticed how incredibly claustrophobic the display is and how hard it is to use most apps with so little information on the screen... How are so many people upset at the lack of a 4" screen?

Most apps aren't even built for even a 4.7" screen anymore!

Beucause different people = different preferences?

I have a 6S as my business phone and an SE as my personal phone. The 6S annoys me for being too big, where as the SE is just right. I use a lot of apps on my phone and the screen size doesn't bother me.

Before coming here to MR and finding out about the announcement, I was on YouTube and saw a promoted ad for the new SE. I immediately went to the apple site to buy the phone and after I put in all my preferred options, I was going crazy trying to find out why it wouldn't let me hit the "continue" button. Then after I came here to MR, I realized it'll be on pre-order Friday.

The owner of original iPhone SE is more interested in the 4” iPhone SE 2. In 2020, Phil Schiller is as dumb as he looks.

4”is unlikely to happen.
Given Apple’s huge success in the last almost 20 years there’s no discussion on the great work Phil has done.
