OK, so an iPhone 8 with an A13. This is exactly what I was expecting and I am happy to see it, I will be buying one. Two questions I have that aren't in the press release (though I'm sure the answers are forthcoming:

(1) Confirmation that this is exactly the chassis of an iPhone 8. Would iPhone 8 cases fit it, or will we need to wait for new cases?
(2) Night mode? It is not mentioned in the press release. I wasn't sure if Night Mode required specific hardware as well as software, and I was hoping that it didn't...might be it's not available?
1. Dimensions on the website are exactly the same as the iPhone 8 so I think it's safe to assume that iPhone 8 cases will fit
2. No night mode - it looks like it has the XR camera, or maybe dual lenses are required for night mode to work?

That's subjective. You do know that people prefer Android by a huge margin, right? Obviously phone prices go into decision making but the point being that there is no way to show that iOS is an advantage.
That varies country to country. iOS share vs. Android in the US, for example, is about 45% to 55%, not a huge margin.

Almost. It doesn't have the same camera lens as the 11's, it has the XR lens (so no Night Mode). They've announced that the battery life is similar to the 8, for better or worse. Still I agree, a great value and I will be ordering on on Friday!
Typical apple, ****ed it... why not including 11 camera, just whyyy... a13 is overkill without 11 camera

Android is by far the most popular mobile OS but obviously people have different preferences. My point is that Apple charges way more for similar (or inferior) product than the competition.

A5x phones are Samsung's second tier phones (just under S series) and they get two OS version updates and security updates for three or more years (with most of the stuff - except for core OS - on Android being updated via Play Store indefinitely).
Samsung's current A series only gets quarterly security updates (vs monthly for the S series).

These are nice looking phones and the price point is just right. It'd make a great backup iPhone but I don't know if I could go between the swipe gesture UI and the Home button. It already messed me up when I had an iPhone X and an iPad Pro (first gen with Home button).

It's nice to have a choice. For what it's worth, even Samsung's flagship S series phones are only slated to receive 2 years of support as well. iPhones may cost more, but Apple seems to offer significantly longer software support.

I think there’s no night mode, that’s a bummer. Night mode would’ve been awesome.

Also are you sure the product (RED) has a black front? I’ve read the red has a white front glass just like the 7. Maybe it’s a typo on Apples site.
Check the Apple website. There are no white fronts at all - even the white SE has a black front.

Argh, the silver / white one apparently has a black front (they dropped the white front), lame move Apple. Red looks better with the black front IMHO, but silver / white sure doesn't.

You can't replace the home button with just another white one, its tied to phone security chip, so this is stuck for most folks.

I'm sure there are reasons having to do with the shape of the chassis they are using. The iPhone 8 chassis has a single lens, for example, whereas the iPhone 11 has two. Perhaps the two cameras are not separable without redesign. Once they've got to start redesigning the chassis and the camera system, then you're adding engineering costs (and maybe retooling?). Might make trying to do a budget-priced phone moot.

Wait, so the 2020 SE has the same 7MP Facetime camera as the iPhone 8, but it can do portrait modes like the FaceID iPhones?
Sounds like Apple is doing more behind the scenes.

What if the 8 is someone's perfect phone and more years of updates is all they really want?

Same reason the SE I was the perfect phone back in 2016 for me - loved my iPhone 5 but was getting slower. That being said the original SE was a bigger boost over the 5 & 5S (better camera, better battery as well as better processor).

to be fair though the gap between the A7 and A9 is much larger than the gap between the A11 and A13

Your point stands though, but it’s important to consider context because the A9 was a massive leap at the time

the A13 is a big leap over the A11 in overall improvement but the relative improvement is minor

R.I.P. 5.5" iPhone Plus design. You were truly the best iPhone.

Though, in all seriousness, it no longer made sense to keep in the lineup. The iPhone lineup with a 4.7", 6.1, and then 5.8" and 6.5" sizes makes much more sense. The 5.5" Phone had features that only existed on themselves and on the premium phones, which made the lineup confusing. Only holdouts, like myself, went for it. Everyone else was fine with the other phones in the lineup.

Screw Apple. This is too big. Im gonna use my old SE until it dies.

I think your attitude toward Apple is Uncalled for. The fact that Apple is even offering a ~$400 iPhone in that price bracket Shows the appeal to a wider demographic Away from the lager, more expensive iPhones, when other smart phone manufacturers Hardly offer anything in this realm. The 4.7 inch iPhone is an extremely popular size, and this will do really well, Apple can’t cater to everybody’s specific need.

you could enable Portrait mode API with the 6s, 7 and 8 on jail broken devices with a tweak.
I did it on my 6s and 7 and it was very impressive.

True I had forgotten how big a leap the A9 was over the A7.

I do think the original SE was a better deal - it had better battery life than the 5S that it replaced by a good margin, even bettering the 6S, had the flagship camera for March 2016 and the same RAM and Processor of the flagship iPhone of March 2016, while being sold cheaper than the 5S.

I'm one of the like 5 people worldwide who uses his smart phone less than I did 5+ years ago (and I'm not retired). I still use the iPhone 6....yes, not the -S, LMAO, that I bought on launch day 2014. I THINK even I am due a new phone.

I don't care about those 400$! I would have payed 2000$ for this:

Black front is better since it hides the bezels with dark mode.

Anyhow, prefer Apple stick to premium segment and leave cheap phones to Android.
