There is nothing new to celebrate about the iPhone 8S. It recycled from the trash and surplus inventory with zero innovation at $399

While it is a shame on the battery and camera front, it is an improvement over the 8 and it is cheaper. It's not meant to be their 'innovative' iPhone, thus the low key release.

Apple have done worse (ie the iPad Air 2 getting replaced with the iPad 9.7.. worse screen, thicker and not any faster) - at least this thing is faster and no worse than the 8 :D

Here's what it says about the SE camera

"iPhone SE features the best single-camera system ever in an iPhone with a 12-megapixel f/1.8 aperture Wide camera, and uses the image signal processor and Neural Engine of A13 Bionic to unlock even more benefits of computational photography, including Portrait mode, all six Portrait Lighting effects and Depth Control.5 Using machine learning and monocular depth estimation, iPhone SE also takes stunning Portraits with the front camera. Next-generation Smart HDR comes to iPhone SE, intelligently re-lighting recognized subjects in a frame for more natural-looking images with stunning highlight and shadow details."

I have an iPhone 11 right now but absolutely hate the size. Does the SE have the same camera as the 11? If so,I'm selling the 11 for the SE.

With so much good tech for $399, it really highlights how much profit there is on the Pro...

Yes and no. keep in mind it's not that striaghtforward.

Yes apple is making money on retail but when looking at the retail price of one product vs another need to consider this is using a more dated design and thus more mature manufacturing process, and also cheaper parts when it comes to core assembly

Plus they're likely projecting more phones sold so build to order numbers will be higher and thus more savings there too

In addition more of these phones will be sold in general to cell phone providers who in turn can sell them back to consumers on contract plans so more profit that way

Basically apple can afford to lower the price and make a profit in one case, less so in the other

A better comparison between the new SE is with the 5th and 6th Gen iPads

"Power and Battery: Lasts about the same as iPhone 8"

my iPhone 8 wasn't ever amazing for battery life :/ can last a full day easy with business like usage but games and video tend to kill it quickly

Agreed, no improvement in battery life and that's probably a deal-breaker for iPhone 8 owner.

I haven't see any mention of Night Mode so far, so my guess is no unless we see official reports saying otherwise.

All the phones are black in front just the back color changes
Check the Apple website. There are no white fronts at all - even the white SE has a black front.
True, you’re all right! I must have read it wrong. I will edit my message

Haha, well I guess the SE was (and still is) one of my favourite devices ever! Took a phone I already really loved and made it a heap better, without any compromises - will probably be the last iPhone I ever have that didn't have compromises!

Yeah, you can probably keep this running a long time - as a basic phone and maybe even replace the battery yourself when others don’t offer that service anymore.

Not so sure on the compromise front, but that’s coming down to personal preference.

1) Horrible battery life (not sure if this is something recent because of an OS update or what,
After the 13.4.1 update the battery of my SE went from 100% down to 0% within less than 8 hours WHITHOUT using the phone at all. Just having it on stand by. I had to reset all settings before the battery went back to normal. I suggest you try it. It could maybe solve your problem. Just be sure to choose Reset All Settings. Not Ersse all content and settings.

Apparently it might, per Rene Ritchie.

No night mode though.

But per Jon Prosser it's the XR camera and his Supply chain info has been on point. He broke this release date and price / specs story so I lean towards believing him

It does look to be same as XR camera on comparison page, minus 3 portrait mode options

Expecting or not, it's still just an iPhone 6. 5 was peak design... and size, frankly.

The market spoke clearly when bigger phones came out with the 6 - they were way more popular. I like the 5 design too, just too small a screen for my liking.

Does anyone know which version of the fingerprint sensor it has? The iPhone 7/8 had the 2nd generation. I see no mention in the material that I’ve read.

No.

Definitely down to a preference thing.

Three of my favourite things about my SE is a) the size + b) Touch ID + c) The headphone jack. I know that my next phone will mean either loosing 2 or 3 of these things which for me will be a compromise.
