As a lover of the 'white front' this makes sense, though I'm still sad to see the end of white fronted iPhones :(

I may be in the minority but glad black fronts are back for the white/silver phones.
I skipped all of the white fronted phones (well, got a 5 in white but later got rid of it for a black one) and got white/silver with the X because of the black front.

I think Apple came to the decision that black fronts look better. Look at their flagships where cost is less of a restricting factor (hell they have all the colours of the rainbow for the 11 for example).
Look at the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, iPad Pro. They all come in white/silver but only have black fronts.

I agree that a white border looks incredibly dumb on the phone. Makes the bezels look huge and looks so bad when the phone is off (and when the phone is on unless the background is predominantly white).

Nice solid phone and price for kids, older folks, or people that generally don't give a damn about technology.
Or just people who just don't really care about phones. As someone who, on a typical work day, carries a Macbook absolutely everywhere it doesn't really matter a whole lot what the phone is capable of. As long as I can check grocery list in a supermarket, look up train schedules and listen some music whilst taking the occasional photo it's all good.

I really wonder about the battery life though and how good/bad it'll be.

The new SE will NOT be a hot seller until either/both COVID ends and consumers feel comfortable again dropping over a half-grand* on a “budget” iPhone. The specs are too weak to draw a virtual “line around the Apple store” like in times past. If this thing was released in Jan/Feb, different tune. My prediction: investors will force a drop in price after Q3 sales are released.

*—$400 phone plus tax, and don’t forget (optional) case, screen protector, AppleCare, storage upgrades.

Just an opinion. Be gentle! :)

I feel pretty confident ship dates will slip within 1-2 hours, and that has nothing to do with the virus. This phone at this price will sell. Just look at the $300 iPad keyboard released today. Within 1 hour ship times slipped.

This is interesting. The SE's camera is in some ways like the Xr (e.g. original True Tone flash, portrait mode is people only, no night mode), but in some ways like the 11 (six portrait effects, next-gen smart HDR). Is it just the A13 enabling those additional effects that the Xr doesn't have?

I would be tempted to upgrade from my 8, because I do love this size phone, and I had to return the 11Pro I bought because it hurt my eyes, but for 256GB (which I need), the extra $149 (37% increase) makes it much less tempting to drop $600 on an incremental update.

I understand this view, but have quite a liking for white fronted iPhones and iPads and sad I won't be able to make the choice. Wish there was a white and black option.

Yeah. Like... Apple pushed that hard didn’t they? The A13 is like 40% more power efficient or something like that? So why doesn’t the SE 2 have any battery life gains on the same battery? Is it that small? Or did they make it smaller again? We’ll find out soon.

I think we all kind of forgot that while the outside is basically an 8R, the insides could house a larger logic board to accommodate the A13, as well as the XR camera, thus requiring a smaller battery.

I think it was to do with reducing inventory of screen replacements, and also making the entire lineup more cohesive, in being black fronted only.

“Shipping estimates” seriously have nothing to do with demand but inventory and, let’s be honest, Apple’s desire to hype their sales because they know that tech journalists will report such slowdowns vs. actually having any immediate insight into supply chains.

I'm an Android fan, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is not even a contest.
- No IP rating.
- poor camera quality (triple means nothing, and depth camera is generally pointless)
- crappy exynos chip

For $399, the 2020 iPhone SE is a steal. No contest.

The only saving grace for Samsung A series, is that in many regions they are sold (like SE Asia), iPhone prices are horribly inflated, making these Samsung Galaxy A series to be decent. For example, in Singapore, the Galaxy A51 is sold at SGD $200 cheaper than the 2020 iPhone SE.

When the price is on par, the iPhone is the obvious winner.

After looking into their A series phones, the A71 seems like it would make for a more worthwhile comparison. While it has a much slower processor (Snapdragon 730) than the SE, it does have a nice 1080p AMOLED display, small bezels, a headphone jack and better cameras than the A51. (though the overall picture and video quality probably still trail the SE). Here in the US, the 128gb model is sold for $400, which is what Apple is asking for the 64gb SE.

I do think this phone will sell like syrupy hot cakes, but I’m super bummed it didn’t get Night Mode and I will now hang onto my 6S to the bitter end in feeble protest.

Yes, the iPhone 5 but the basics are to have an off-cycle iPhone product which is that form factor but independent of the yearly iPhone update grind. Apple can't even do that correctly anymore.
We never really knew that to be the case. What we knew is that the original SE was a 4" screen and that it used the 5S parts with upgraded internals. The important bit for Apple could have been the second and the first was a coincidence. With this release, that confirms it.

This is good for those who don't want to pay a high price for a phone and also for teens (too bad for those who really want a top of line but they can get when they get a job). I am glad they included the latest Bluetooth and WiFi.

Definitely won't be a wise choice to spend $399 without any new major feature.

Much prefer the 5 series design. My SE does everything I need it too. Still going strong, feel no desire to upgrade to this.
