The 4" iPod Touch is still on sale, so no, not quite. Not really sure why you care so much about it being discontinued though? Kinda weird mentality.

Trust me, that thing needs to be discontinued as well. A future iteration of the iPod touch would be better served by the 4.7” display or it needs to be discontinued.

The 4” size screen (1136x640) is simply one extra resolution that is a pain in the a** for developers to still have to target builds for and having it as the lowest common denominator makes no sense anymore. It did in 2014 when the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were brand new, but in 2020, the 4” display is now the outlier, the odd duck. With it being put the rest, the lowest common denominator is now the 4.7” screen size.

I do think this phone will sell like syrupy hot cakes, but I’m super bummed it didn’t get Night Mode and I will now hang onto my 6S to the bitter end in feeble protest.
I think this will be a great seller in countries like the US, where it will be offered for free upfront on installment /contract.

Outside the US, it won't be such huge hit as the base price will be inflated to $500-$600 USD. At those prices, the offerings from many Android makers are much more enticing.

Actually, though it has the same dimensions, it is possible to have altered button placement that would mess around with case fits. But I would assume that this is enough to confirm it's exactly an iPhone 8 chassis.

But does the XR camera, paired with an A13, allow for Night Mode? The XR paired with the A12 does not, is the upgrade to A13 sufficient? I'm guessing it isn't, since it's not mentioned in the press release.

It's been this way for all of the iPhone X / XR / 11 too

Yeah. It fits with their current design language and matches the higher end models.

Additionally, one could argue, it harkens back to the iPhone 3G/3GS or 5c white models and that design language.

Also, to hit a lower price point its cheaper from a supply chain perspective to just order one shipment of one type of faceplate as opposed two different colours. This was similar to how the iPhone 5c was manufactured too.

This will also make repairs more streamlined and the savings will go to the consumer too (as seen in Apple Care Plus being cheaper for the new SE)

I miss the white front too, was not my preference but I really liked how their silver iPhones looked. Alas those who want that can still choose a cheaper iPhone 8 that runs beautifully on iOS 13 as well

Ah, the typical Android marketing check list, ppi and RAM. As if those matter. The crappy exynos won't change a thing, poor user experience especially in games.

The A51 is a decent phone in the markets it's in simply because it is at a much lower price point than the iPhone like I pointed out. But if they're priced similarly, why would you get the A51 with poorer performance and shorter software support?
Resolution and ppi do not matter for display and RAM does not matter for a computer (smartphone). Interesting observation. Obviously false though. User experience in games I am sure will be enhanced by OLED, screen size and resolution. Games on 4.7" screen don't look that great.

Apple today announced the second-generation iPhone SE with a 4.7-inch display, A13 Bionic chip, Touch ID home button, up to 256GB of storage, and more.

SE-2-Announced.jpg

The new iPhone SE sports a single-lens 12-megapixel wide-angle camera with Portrait mode support. With a glass-backed design like the iPhone 8, the new iPhone SE is also capable of Qi-certified wireless charging.

The new iPhone SE comes in black, white and (PRODUCT)RED and will be available for pre-order beginning at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, April 17. The device will also be available for purchase at select Apple Authorized Resellers and carriers starting Friday, April 24 in the United States and more than 40 other countries and regions.

Pricing starts at $399 in the United States with 64GB of storage, with 128GB and 256GB options available for $449 and $549 respectively. Given this price point, the new iPhone SE has some tradeoffs, including an LCD display instead of OLED, an aluminum frame over stainless steel, Touch ID instead of Face ID, and a single rear camera lens rather than multiple.

Other features of the new iPhone SE include a 7-megapixel front camera, IP67-rated water resistance, Wi-Fi 6, and similar battery life as the iPhone 8. And unlike the original iPhone SE, there is no headphone jack.

Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller:The new iPhone SE comes with a 5W power adapter, Lightning to USB cable, and EarPods with a Lightning connector in the box.

Lmao. It’s an iPhone 6.

Yeah, this is the unfortunate problem with additional markup outside the USA.

The Pixel 4a will be the same price in Canada for example presuming it replaces the 3a price point, and for the target audience, the 4a might be more enticing. You get a processor that is more comparable to the A9 and A10 in speed, but full screen design with the same stunning pixel 4 camera with an exceptional night mode. Plus it will have a headphone jack for those who want that. Stock android is fast, light and smooth, and works great.

There are trade offs. Apple wanted their most recent processor in this phone, and had to sacrifice in other areas to bring the price down. The camera is still fantastic, even if it doesn't support night mode.

This is the tough balancing act all "budget" devices have to deal with. Sacrifices are either made to camera, processor, screen. Apple had to balance what worked for them and their business model.

ooooo. I am so tempted to get rid of this chunky X and upgrade to an SE.
Lol, this is a particularly silly comment. Given that the X and the 8 had (have) exactly the same internals, why did you buy the "chunky" X in the first place?

Hoping, yes. Expecting, no.

Apple could have redefined what a small size phone could be, alas, they had to milk the same device. Again.
Apple isn't milking a device, they are using a form factor, presumably people like. They decided the 5s form factor is not viable today. You wanted them to come up a completely new phone for $399?

They've always been the same price, at least for iPhones (since iPhone 7)

I think a small part of their profit on the PRODUCT RED devices would just go towards RED reliefs
Oh, cool, thanks for the clarification.

I'll stick with my SE.

I do rate the new SE itself along w/ its pricing as a home run for Apple, especially at this time when a lot of people's finances are up in the air, because that situation doesn't make the need for a functional smartphone just disappear. And in my book, an SE w/ 256GB of storage for $549 --before any AppleCare+ elections-- is a great deal in my book. I'd get the lower of the AppleCare+ options for $79 so still comes in under 700 bucks. Outstanding.

But I need a new laptop first, so any new iPhone would end up on a wishlist for awhile... and my existing 128GB SE suits my needs very well in the meantime. Still, I'll be looking for that newer SE even before it hits the Apple refurb shelves. I'd rather have one with a headphone jack but I can live without it.

It's listed as ฿14,900 including tax here: so $455. What's the average sales tax in the US?

For me this thing is what I was looking for, a dual sim iphone 8. Don't care about face id, dont care about a big screen as im not comsuming media on my phone. Use it just for calling/texting/some email.

The only question will be battery life, which I hope will prove to be a little better with the A13.
