I think it was to do with reducing inventory of screen replacements, and also making the entire lineup more cohesive, in being black fronted only.

That makes sense when you're dealing with a ton of variations but the screen is seperate from the body in both assembly and repair, so there will not be exponentially more parts to store.

If only the iPhone SE had no white face i would agree with you. But the trend with all new Apple products is that they don't have white faces - including the iPhone 11 which already has half a dozen colors (they would've cut one of those colors if they wanted to save on permutations).

Where did you see this?

Had it set to buy white. It shows a black front. Thought it would display here but you must select the model yourself.

It is strange that Apple itself highlights that the original SE was a hit due to its size, yet releases a much larger phone as a result.

They are making things worse rather than trying to innovate at that price range and lack of U1 chip is more reason not to purchase it.

I'm an Android fan, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is not even a contest.
- No IP rating.
- poor camera quality (triple means nothing, and depth camera is generally pointless)
- crappy exynos chip

For $399, the 2020 iPhone SE is a steal. No contest.

The only saving grace for Samsung A series, is that in many regions they are sold (like SE Asia), iPhone prices are horribly inflated, making these Samsung Galaxy A series to be decent. For example, in Singapore, the Galaxy A51 is sold at SGD $200 cheaper than the 2020 iPhone SE.

When the price is on par, the iPhone is the obvious winner.
The camera has macro, portrait and night modes. It's not the greatest camera around but SE camera won't be either. IP rating is nice. On the other hand:
Se has 1334-by-750-pixel resolution at 326 ppi
A51 has 1080 x 2400 pixels, 20:9 ratio (~405 ppi density)
A51 probably has 2x RAM (Apple did not disclose RAM size as usual but we will learn eventually)

I'm surprised MKBHD hasn't uploaded a video that he has been using the new iPhone SE over the last couple of weeks/months. Normally he's always (among) the first to (p)review new Apple products!

Hoping, yes. Expecting, no.

Apple could have redefined what a small size phone could be, alas, they had to milk the same device. Again.

The 4” screen size is too small for modern apps and it’s well past time it was laid to rest. The 4” SE is an outlier and has been for a long time. But it needed to go...the market has consistently and completely shifted away from small screen phones, to the point where the 4.7” phone is as small as Apple should go. There is simply not enough buyers for Apple to invest in engineering a smaller iPhone than 4.7”.

No, this is the SE. Apple gets to name it whatever they want. That tired old 4” display has finally been laid to rest. Thank God!
The 4" iPod Touch is still on sale, so no, not quite. Not really sure why you care so much about it being discontinued though? Kinda weird mentality.

A lot of interesting comments and I get that this new SE won’t meet everyone’s needs and dreams. For me, with 300 Galaxy A3s deployed, this announcement makes iOS at least a contender for the next refresh.

Curious: if I go to the website and price out the configuration I want, the product(RED) version is no more expensive than the same configuration in either of the other colors. Isn't it supposed to be more expensive?

That's subjective. You do know that people prefer Android by a huge margin, right? Obviously phone prices go into decision making but the point being that there is no way to show that iOS is an advantage.
I only post on this site so I'm not concerned what others prefer on android sites.

I may get one of these to use as a DAP. Great storage, low cost, and doubles as a backup phone should my primary break.... very tempted to purchase this.

At first, I was upset about a lack of headphone jack, but really, I don’t even own a pair of traditional headphones anymore.

Ah, the typical Android marketing check list, ppi and RAM. As if those matter. The crappy exynos won't change a thing, poor user experience especially in games.

The A51 is a decent phone in the markets it's in simply because it is at a much lower price point than the iPhone like I pointed out. But if they're priced similarly, why would you get the A51 with poorer performance and shorter software support?

Why on earth is Apple still releasing products with a Lightning port?? Get with the times!
Whilst I do hope they get rid of the Lightning port and move to USB-C, it was very unlikely that they would do so on this lower-end device, whilst the flagship models are still using Lightning. But there's still some hope for the iPhone 12.

They've always been the same price, at least for iPhones (since iPhone 7)

I think a small part of their profit on the PRODUCT RED devices would just go towards RED reliefs
