So like the SE but nothing like the SE.

Yeah crazy isn’t it... i heard they were considering making their new ’SE’ the same shape as a 5S and with the internals of a 6S but after months of planning someone meekly pointed out that this wouldn’t be a great idea as they'd already sold and discontinued such a model. They then settled on the configuration and design announced today, having realised that it would represent a logical step forward and be viably marketable.

I'm always hopeful they'll be an iPhone I can come back to.
How would they make it less ‘boring‘ for you? I’d quite like one that comes with a feather boa and a built-in pez dispenser.

650 comments...what do u mean there’s no excitement?
Because 650 middle aged men posting comments about a phone doesn’t constitute excitement? Wild guess...

How I miss Touch ID on my iPhone. Face ID sucks especially during the mask-wearing times.
and laying around the house its hit or miss. Its more frustrating in these situations and on a counter. Id be perfect happy if Touch ID came back under the glass and faceid died a quick 3 year death.

stainless steel is more expensive than aluminum

Aluminium is more expensive than stainless steel:

https://agmetalminer.com/metal-prices/stainless-steel/ - currently $1.16/lb
https://agmetalminer.com/metal-prices/aluminum/ - currently $1.52/lb

Stainless steel is just heavier.

Apple is exploiting an aspect of how we measure quality when we hold something - weight.

They use weight to create products which "feel" expensive. Helps to justify the exorbitant prices.

They do the same with Beats - they include unnecessary weights which serve no purpose other than to add weight. Results in a more quality feel of product. It's still plasticky, disposable tat...it's just wearing some lip stick now.

Smoke-and-mirrors.

it is nice to see it starts with 64 GB. Water resistance, wireless charging and barometer are also very welcome additions over current SE. I hope it has 2nd generation of Touch ID.

All of the “solid state” TouchID devices are 2nd gen Touch ID.

and the Second gen XDR OLED panel is not just a recycled X or XS panel, Its more energy efficient, can go up to 1200 nits (which is insane for a smartphone), And has a superior contrast ratio to highlight the HDR content more.
I can’t tell any difference between it and my X, but it
doesn’t matter
This is how marketing works nowadays. Everyone needs the best and the most, but why never knows.

too bad all musicians and people in the music industry / audio still use headphone jacks, and the older type too..

I'd imagine that the vast majority of them probably use a higher quality, USB DAC, and avoid the built-in 3.5mm port on the computer they're using. What's your point here exactly?

Not as long as there is a single ounce of meat left on that horse, they are just going to keep beating it to death.
So they'll only stop when there's no more... meat to beat...? Wait that doesn't sound right..

Hasn't really gotten better since
I'm pretty sure it literally has gotten better, both in terms of quality, and battery use.

Glad to see this available at product launch. Some of the other (red) models in the past have come after the initial product launch, which has been a disappointment. Good to see availability at launch becoming the trend.

Quality, don't think so. Battery usage got better with v4, but that was still a while ago. Those are nerd stats anyway. The problems for most people are cost and usability. The pairing process is still flaky and overly complicated, and there's no excuse for that. When you can just connect a cable and be done with it, why bother?

People still didn't use Bluetooth headphones even in the days of the iPhone 6S. Unless you can point to a big jump in the technology around that time, there's nothing to believe except that Apple wanted to sell accessories, and there are enough iPhone users who would rather go with the flow than use an old iPhone or a 'droid.

Apple today announced the second-generation iPhone SE with a 4.7-inch display, A13 Bionic chip, Touch ID home button, up to 256GB of storage, and more.

SE-2-Announced.jpg

The new iPhone SE sports a single-lens 12-megapixel wide-angle camera with Portrait mode support. With a glass-backed design like the iPhone 8, the new iPhone SE is also capable of Qi-certified wireless charging.

The new iPhone SE comes in black, white and (PRODUCT)RED and will be available for pre-order beginning at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, April 17. The device will also be available for purchase at select Apple Authorized Resellers and carriers starting Friday, April 24 in the United States and more than 40 other countries and regions.

Pricing starts at $399 in the United States with 64GB of storage, with 128GB and 256GB options available for $449 and $549 respectively. Given this price point, the new iPhone SE has some tradeoffs, including an LCD display instead of OLED, an aluminum frame over stainless steel, Touch ID instead of Face ID, and a single rear camera lens rather than multiple.

Other features of the new iPhone SE include a 7-megapixel front camera, IP67-rated water resistance, Wi-Fi 6, and similar battery life as the iPhone 8. And unlike the original iPhone SE, there is no headphone jack.

Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller:The new iPhone SE comes with a 5W power adapter, Lightning to USB cable, and EarPods with a Lightning connector in the box.

This phone sucks and isn’t anything like the original SE. wanted a small firm factor not an old iPhone.

The new iPhone SE 2020 edition is more like an iPhone 8S/9 than an actual iPhone 8. As Apple never release an iPhone 8S or iPhone 9. The iPhone SE 2020 edition and iPhone 8 are identical in size and shape (138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3mm) and both weigh 148 grams. They both have a single rear camera and flash along with a glass back.

The new iPhone SE 2020 edition has the same display as the iPhone 8: 4.7-inch Retina HD 1334x750 resolution at 326 ppi, along with True Tone, P3 wide color, and 625 nits of max brightness. However, the iPhone 8 has 3D touch and the iPhone SE 2020 edition doesn’t. Instead Apple gave the iPhone SE 2020 edition Haptic Touch. Both the iPhone 8 and the the iPhone SE 2020 still use that finger print button for touch id.

The SE has Apple’s A13 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 8 is powered by the A11 Bionic chip.
The iPhone 8 has 2GB of RAM. Now, the SE 2020 edition iPhone is rumored to have 3GB. We'll find out the amount of RAM the new iPhone SE 2020 has once ifixit does a tear-down.

Both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone SE 2020 edition are IP67 rated for water and dust resistance which allows them to go into water up to 1 and a half meters for up to 30 minutes. Both the iPhone 8 and the new iPhone SE 2020 edition can do wireless charging via glass back. They also both have the same stereo speakers, Apple Pay support via NFC, and Bluetooth 5. The SE 2020 edition iPhone has the new Wifi 6 standard 802.11/a/b/g/n/ac/ax. Whereas, the iPhone 8 has the old wifi 5 standard 802.11/a/b/g/n/ac.

Info on wifi 6 and why its awesome https://www.theverge.com/2019/2/21/18232026/wi-fi-6-speed-explained-router-wifi-how-does-work

The iPhone 8 and iPhone SE both have a single 12MP, f/1.8 wide camera with digital zoom up to 5x. The iPhone SE 2020 edition get a sapphire crystal lens cover (a feature not on the iPhone 8). The iPhone SE 2020 edition allows Portrait Mode (limited to people), Portrait Lighting, Smart HDR, and QuickTake video, all of which are not available on the iPhone 8. Both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone SE 2020 edition can record 4K video and have the same 7MP, f/2.2 front camera. Only difference with the front camera on the SE 2020 edition is you can now take portrait videos with the front camera (couldn't do that on iPhone 8).

For those saying that this iPhone SE 2020 edition is an iPhone 6 or and iPhone 6S. They're wrong for saying that.
The only thing that this iPhone SE 2020 edition has in common with the iPhone 6 or 6S is: the screen size, resolution, demensions, touch id, and the single rear camera. Outside of those things it's way better than the iPhone 6,6S, 7,and just slightly better than the iPhone 8. The iPhone SE 2020 edition is very similar to the iPhone 8 internally with some improvements inside.

Only the iPhone 11,11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, and now the New SE 2020 edition iPhone have wifi 6.
Also the iPad Pro 2020 is the only iPad to get wifi 6 tandard 802.11/a/b/g/n/ac/ax.

bluetooth headphones have increased dramatically in quality. It's not going to give you the same quality as sitting in a room with $1000 cans, but if your on a walk, the gym, or a bus or train, pair these with a pair of Sony or Bose or Apple headphones and you're going to have a very good audio experience.
Not really, I have old ones, same stuff. Really the Bluetooth bitrate has been sufficient for a long time, and I have no complaints about it. Yeah, I know it's worse than analog, but nobody cares except for audiophiles.

Quality, don't think so.
Your claim claim was that bluetooth audio hasn't got any better since the original iPhone.

Both Qualcom and Apple have produced custom silicon for the express purpose of providing better quality audio than the 'default' of Bluetooth A2DP.

But sure. Nothing has changed in 13 years.

You mean like the W1 chip in first-gen AirPods?

So your argument is: no one used bluetooth audio because it's crap and hasn't improved; but you haven't actually got new bluetooth headphones and just claim they're "the same"; you have no complaints though, and most people don't care, including yourself?

Did you just have a stroke?

I never complained about the audio quality, which you should have seen before throwing insults. It was fine before, it hasn't improved in a way regular people care about, and it's not what matters anyway. Pairing ought to just work, and it doesn't. You get a bad experience if either end is not Apple-made, and "passing the aux" is impossible in any case, plus it costs a lot more.

The W1 chip only helps if you buy Apple headphones and a new iPhone (or Mac?), and it's not an improvement in Bluetooth technology, rather a proprietary add-on. The removal of the jack is only to sell more of those. The market says, iPhone users are in the minority, and outside this world, most phones have jacks (without compromising in hardware).

Price starting at $399? That sounds so crazy to me cus I’m so use to these $1000 iPhones now I guess lmao

It's only a refreshed 8, but part of me would be relieved not to be paying US$60 a month anymore for my iPhone XS plan.
