Solid guts and connectivity upgrade, I imagine this’d be perfect for my mum. Slight shame they didn’t increase the screen to body ratio a bit though bit I guess it’s got to hit a price point that can still get them the profit numbers.

I think Apple may have let themselves down in terms of this devices size. One major attraction of the original SE was the fact it was compact in the sizing of the iPhone 5. I think Apple may have assumed cost was the 'only' reason people liked the SE.

I have to admit I knew a lot of people who bought the first edition and were in the position to easily afford whatever iPhone they wanted. It was the size that appealed and Apple appear to have missed a trick there.

That being said is a nice phone for what it offers and I'm sure it'll be a slow burner in regards of popularity. It does annoy me though that Apple never quite deliver fully and this seems to have been their model for a few years now.

That is still not proven story. Could be from Xr which is without night mode. Teardown will show us the truth.
Or if it is from 11, then could be software blocking of the feature to differentiate from higher tier 11.

Yeah all reports say it’s XR camera

The 5G Smartphone will be coming down at a price range of $399 and there is no reason to buy another iteration of iPhone 8 with modest updates that also lack of U1 chip, 3D touch sensor and OLED panel.
3D touch sensor was discontinued in the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro. The only iPhones to get a 3D touch sensor was the iPhone 6S,6S PLUS,7,7 Plus, 8,8 PLUS XS and XS max.

The iPhone XR, iPhone 11,iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max have a Haptic touch sensor.

Thus your complaint on the iPhone SE 2020 edition not getting 3D touch seems rather odd.

I agree with you that this phone should of gotten the U1 chip as I don't see this chip as being too costly. It seems like Apple is being picky with this chip since the 2020 iPad Pro that start at $799/$999 don't have a U1 chip in it. Yet the iPhone 11,11 Pro, and Pro Max get a U1 chip.

As far as OLED it would of been nice, but I can see why they kept the OLED out of the iPhone SE 2020 edition. I mean it starts at $399 why would they give this iPhone the same type of screen they give to there $999/$1,099 iPhone 11/11Pro. Also the iPhone 11 which starts at $699 does NOT get an OLED screen and it is a much higher price than this new iPhone SE 2020 which starts at $399

I don't like the black front on the white. Looks cheap. I want an all-white phone - looks much classier.

I can see why they did it - because it creates the illusion of a full screen display, like the various X and 11 models.

Massive disappointment, but not unexpected.
Apple don't seem to realise it was the FORM and SIZE of the original which made it a hit for a large number of users.

I don't want to give up single-handed use, period.
3.5 - 4" is the maximum/perfect size for this, as Steve Jobs said right from the start.

I've recently purchased 2 new backup SEs to keep me going until Apple come to their senses.

Massive win. Expect huge sales even in these strange times. Never trust a MR member comment over the real world - hello Apple Watch and AirPods.
Does that mean your comment can't be trusted either? lol Now that confuses things!

Seriously though, I think this iPhone will sell well, but it will disappoint many current SE owners with its increased size. The Apple Watch was a slow burner but within a couple of years its popularity increased ten fold. AirPods are a strange one though and not on the same scale. I think unlike the Apple Watch the reason for that is the fact there are many equal equivalent earphones and better alternatives on the market at a much lower cost. The popularity of AirPods is still very much niche I would say.

i have iPhone Max, 256gb, specifically bought because of the hyped OLED. I see no difference with no OLED phones :) Makes me think the LED is good enough in all cases.

The point is OLED can increase a significant amount of battery life and it's commonly used on smartphones price at $399

Agreed, no improvement in battery life and that's probably a deal-breaker for iPhone 8 owner.

yeh although you'd be getting a fresh battery so some slight improvement in that sense, fine for light users (possibly a big audience anyway) but not going to really game a lot on that A13 without going dead by the end of the day :/

I change my previous statement of - there is not much to not like about this iPhone

there are two things!

*No night mode on the camera even though the A13 is capable
(possible the sensor is not due to less focus areas - yet to be confirmed)
*4K HDR capped out at 30fps even though the A13 is capable of 60fps
(just an attempted upsell to 11 Pro and/or batter life concerns)

Be nice if they enabled those two features on the SE in a couple of years once they are no longer selling it or when the 12 Pro is out which separates itself in completely new ways. But this is Apple so probably not :/

Are there any other A13 features that seem to be disabled? i think it's just these two

Realistically, the improvement in battery life is to be expected but it is the same as iPhone 8 with no slight increase at all. Therefore, it is not justifiable to consider an upgrade over the current model.

So how exactly is that iPhone SE and not a 8S or something? What I wanted was a small phone (like the original SE), not a tennis racket. I guess we can expect an iPhone SE Pro Max later in the year.

"The first iPhone SE was a hit with many customers who loved its unique combination of small size, high-end performance and affordable price; the new second-generation iPhone SE builds on that great idea and improves on it in every way."

In two out of three ways, actually.

Nah, it improves them all in every way. Small size -> larger size. High end -> today's high end, affordable price -> affordable today compared to 11ProMax.

The problem is that some of us actually wanted a SMALL PHONE. Not something that's exactly what we could've already bought from store yesterday, only we didn't want to because we wanted something smaller.

So how exactly is that iPhone SE and not a 8S or something?
the original SE was essentially a 5S shell, with mostly the same guts as the 6S. So same-as-new guts, 2-and-a-bit year old body.

the new SE is essentially an 8 shell, with mostly mostly the same guts as the 10/10 Pro. So same-as-new guts, 2-and-a bit year old body.

I think I see a trend here. Besides the repetitive whining about the size of it I mean.

You guys know the "S" in "SE" doesn't stand for "small" right?

My work iPhone is a 6 with a wireless charger card under the case so I can pop it in and out of my car's Qi charger.
It's getting tired and slow with today's apps and the battery is failing.
A product red SE looks like a nice replacement and I can loose the charging card. Too bad they didn't have a 32 or 16gb models for less. My 6 is a 16gb and I have 8gb free. Only use a few apps for work. Assuming single sim support.

Surprised they didn't keep 3D Touch since the 8 had it and they could have kept using the same lcd parts. Wouldn't that be something if we found out it still has the hardware but just disabled like the X?

No Night mode.

So I was wrong about the camera. I was sure they’ll put in a flagship main sensor, like they did with the OG SE, and like Google does with Pixel 3a/4a, not holding back features. But they decided to go with a 2018 iPhone XR camera in addition to using 2014 iPhone 6 design...

This will probably still sell well but personally I am absolutely not interested.
If you want the flagship camera, it’s not going to be at the $400 entry level tier. Not even the $700 mid-tier. That’s a flagship feature.
