So the rumor was three Thunderbolt 5 ports, and the reality is two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Weak. Even three Thunderbolt 4 would have been a great step.

Speak for yourself; I'm far from being a woman, but I don't care for dark colors and never have. No need to be sexist.

The blue looks infinitely better, to me, than the space grey. My M1 was space grey, but I went back to silver for my M4.
I've always disliked the black and grey Macs (except for maybe the iMac Pro). Blue looks soooooo much nicer. But silver is the safest since there is no paint/anodized layer to wear off.

BTW, speaking of colours for laptops that women like...

Back 25 years ago, I bought a shiny new white 12" G3 iBook. All of a sudden, random women would come and talk to me. This was a regular occurrence. In a coffee shop, in the library, or whatever, pretty young ladies would come up to me to strike up a short conversation. It wasn't because of my rugged looks or my amazing personality, but because I had that white iBook. Such colours were extremely unusual in the laptop world at that time.

However, the G3 was too underpowered so the following year I replaced it with a grey G4 PowerBook Titanium. And all of a sudden, all those random women stopped talking to me. :(

So the rumor was three Thunderbolt 5 ports, and the reality is two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Weak. Even three Thunderbolt 4 would have been a great step.
Just about nobody was predicting Thunderbolt 5 ports for the MacBook Air.

What does this offer me over an m2 in real life usage day to day? Debating this vs m2 at a $200 premium.
I agree. I use an M2 Air for all my writing needs, and it runs plenty fast and runs everything I throw at it. Plus, I get 15 hours+ of battery out of it. That's plenty enough power for me. But I'm sure the M4 Air is measurably better. Or is it?

How is ditching your most popular colour option understandable? Across the board Apple’s colour options are hideous. Everything seems geared towards colours that women like. I’m sick of pastel colours with stupid names.

Yeah, Apple needs to come out with Super Butch Manly Camo! It can be available on a special new MacBook PM (Performative Masculinity) series, and rather than batteries, they will all run on diesel. Or coal!

If I buy using Edu store to have shipped does apple verify student id somehow?
I see you are in LA. In the US and Canada, there is no such verification for online edu orders. There is sometimes in-store, but not always. However, in other countries, verification is often needed.

No, but as of yesterday there IS a 20% tariff on goods from China; that Apple was able/willing to lower the price, knowing that, is admirable.
It’s a lot more complicated than that. Are Macs considered imports from China? They have components from all over the world.

I love it, only thing that I was sure they would add is an additional thunderbolt port on the right side. We know the M4 chip can support it based on the iMac, M4 MacBook Pro and Mac mini, so yeah, I really thought Apple was finally gonna do it on this one.

The nano texture screen reduces glare significantly. However, it also makes it harder to clean, and text fuzzier. I actually prefer matte screens for desktops, but not so much for laptops. However, I have the luxury of be able to buy both for my usage. I know a lot of people buy laptops as their sole "desktop" these days.
One thing I would. Be curious is if the screen isn’t cleaned properly will it degrade over time, or degrade even from proper cleaning.

One of the reasons I ordered so quickly is the uncertainty about these tariffs. China had 10% and Trump added 10% on top with the risk of further tariffs if retaliatory tariffs or unwanted political or economy moves by China are taken. And I can easily imagine that Apple passes on a 25% price increase to us if Trump adds that. Or there could be supply issues as the entire supply chain might fall into some tariff somewhere in the world leading to shipping delays because some small supplier can’t get some part because it got more expensive.
